Or if you're not into the whole Turkey thing, what do you have instead?

We keep our Turkey pretty simple. We just rub some real butter all over that sucker and then sprinkle a little salt and pepper on it and then shove a cut up apple, orange and several cloves of garlic inside it and throw it in a bag. And then smell it for the next 4 hours.

I really love the Turkey bags, they keep the Turkey so nice and moist. Anyone else use them? I say once you go bag you never go back.

Does anyone here try to deep fry theirs? I haven't heard a happy ending to that one yet, so here's your chance to give your deep fry success story.

Last year we had a maple-bacon bird, unbagged, and it was tasty. This year I'm doing an apple-sage bird in the bag. I love the bag since the turkey stays moist without my basting it every 20 minutes, and clean-up is a snap!

Kitchen smells yummy, football's on the t.v., and the day is not passing too quickly. Yeah, it's a good day.

It's never too late to start, Adi. Cook a chicken and invite some friends over. You can add more to it every year until it's a tradition in the Adi household.

Sure you do... you got us. What more do you need? I used to make a Turkey for myself before I met my wife. Anyone can cook. Especially with the internet around.

Oh and I wouldn't want to venture into cooking a whole bird by myself. I googled cooking potatoes once and managed to screw that up. :|

Poor, Adi. Come over here next year and feast with us. Until then, invite family over, they'll do in a pinch. ;)

Re: How do you cook your bird?
Mostly sober these days.
Mrs. Darcy bought me this green egg (http://www.biggreenegg.com/) cooker a couple of Christmases ago.
It's pretty easy to do.
Tastes good.
All I needed to do was put ketchup on to taste.
On my plate.

We do the bag. We only use some cooking spray on and in the bird. It takes less time to cook and comes out juicy and tender. It always tastes good and it's a lot less messy. Since Sarah became a vegetarian after we got back from Alaska, she's eating some homemade lentil tofu burgers, and we're using vegie broth in the gravy.

Then you haven't talked to anyone from Cajun County ;) ... we deep fry them all the time around here and they're delicious... of course I gave up meat a while back so had to just take everyone's word for it this year... :)

Is that right? Have you ever done it? Why do so many folks burn their houses down? Or is that just an exaggeration.

I've helped do it numerous times and have friends and family who fry them all the time... and none have ever burned anything down... we always fry them in a fish cooker outside though...

Maybe that's it. Maybe those folks that burn their houses down are the same people that fire up the BBQ in the middle of the living room to keep warm when the power goes out. Makes sense when you think about it.

That's what I was thinking... that they were trying to fry it inside... which I would never do... you have to get the peanut oil hot enough to light a match .... and if they don't have a hook strong enough and secure enough on the bird, I can see where the oil might spill out and set something on fire...

She doesn't like it too much when i try to put her in the oven. She doesn't complain about being basted and covered with bacon though...

This is very late now, but I haven't had much free time to post the last two days. We actually did something similar to PW this year. Brenda threw into the center of the bird some quartered oranges and lemons as well as some thyme. I thought it pretty much tasted the same, but maybe there was just a slight extra pizzazz. Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

Just found this by accident. Happy belated thanksgiving!

Last thanksgiving I saw some posters talking about burning the house down. I looked up the net and it's from putting a whole frozen turkey in the deep dryer. Good god, how big are your monster deep fryers?

All hail Necromancer Dani!! ;)

To respond to OP, mom always used bags. My grandma taught me to cook so I find them BLASPHEMOUS. Like you though, I melt a stick of butter and rub that baby down. A good bit of salt and pepper and that's it.

I bake it in a large, deep, foil pan uncovered. About each hour I will brush more melted butter over the entirety of the bird, possibly turning the pan if the heat is uneven. The last hour or so I'll lay a foil triangle over the breast to keep from drying out. The last 15 or so I'll remove the foil, brush on one last coat, and let the skin crisp.

No fruit. No stuffing. No frill. Just a perfectly moist meat held within a perfectly crisped golden skin that gently crackles as you carve it.

Ugh. I want to bake a turkey now. =*(

My bird is Swan.

I haven't cooked him yet.

Any ideas?

Cooked it in a pit mexican style with achiote last year. Eh... The meat was supper moist but not sure about the achiote. In small quantities its fine but you need a ton of it to cook a whole turkey in and its pretty earthy stuff so it wound up tasting like it had been boiled in clay...

I'd try it again but I'd use a different rub next time. Also if you are big on presentation this isnt the way to go as you end up with a pile of meat thats basically fallen off the bone.

Ive deep fried it before and thats fun but dont overcook it. Next time I may try full out smoking it in the smoker but I'll probably want to experiment with that first before the big day so I get a better fix on time and temperature to cook something like that without drying it out or leaving it raw in the middle.

Hi. I usually cook my bird, precisely chicken, in a crispy way. You’ll need to dip the meat in eggs, then into a mixture consisting of flour, flavoured seasonings and bread crumbs. You just have to deep fry the chicken for a few minutes. Your delicious dish is ready. You can try this recipe. Goodbye!
