it's all very exciting, isn't it?
i've wanted to make a list like this for a very long time now, only i felt like i needed to see more movies first. i still feel like that now, but i'm starting to realize i'll probably always feel like that.
anyway, i'll be putting up the first ten soon--hopefully tonight!

I honestly didn't know about Can't Hardly Wait (1999), or Dentist (1966). I've thought about seeing The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), but it would probably be too depressing for me right now.

i think Now and Then, for me, is one of those that came out when i was just about 13, and i just had to see it. i loved it at the time. i've caught it on TV a couple times since then, and it always comes off really corny now, but its still a guilty pleasure.

actually, i only recently saw Caged--about a month ago or so. but i loved it so. i find the writing brilliant and colorful. its tense, gripping very realistic and even dare i say a little campy, which only adds to the experience of watching it. and Eleanor Parker is a revelation. her transformation from sweet innocent into a hard bitten broad is unreal! its so seamless.

i've only seen Boogie Nights twice--the first time was about 4 or 5 years ago--and at the time, i thought it was pretty good, but not amazing. the second time was a few months ago or so, and i appreciated it so much more. when i was making this list, i read into this film a bit more, and when i found out Paul Thomas Anderson was only 27-years-old [that's only three years older than me, folks!] when he wrote this, i felt nearly humbled. especially since this is probably one of the best and most realistic potrayals of the 80's i have ever seen, and he was just a young teen at the time.

I'm also dreadful with writing reviews. Although you did very well answering Marks question, so I am sure you are a lot better at it than I am. I like your idea. A favorite quote, with each movie. I did that by making a favorite movie scene. Well, two to three scenes per movie, and I put them all together in one video clip. My way takes forever to do, though. Which is one of the reasons why I'm very behind with mine. I need to work up a horror genre set, very soon. Very soon!

which ones don't you want to see? some of the movies i have here are definitely either hit or miss.
As you asked, I shall respond.
Tonari No Totoro (just because I don't like Anime. I've tried and tried, but I just can't do it)
Mean Creek (Because it does look like a mean, nasty film. Also, I don't like the 'look' of the film and that's something that I can never get past. It's why I've never seen Withnail & I)
Fried Green Tomatoes (I love chick flicks, but this just looks so boring. Sorry.)
Broken Flowers (It looked like that years "Must See American Indie Film", there's usually one a year. Others I've given that title include Rushmore, Lost In Translation, Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite, The Royal Tenenbaums. The only one I saw and enjoyed was Sideways)
Life is beautiful (The Italian bloke just annoys me. Also, it looked like there was a lot of 'physical comedy' in it and that's not my thing)
On the plus side, there's only 6 films so far that I really don't like.

on My Neighbor Totoro: fair enough.
i have no idea what your taste in films are, but i find it really hard to believe that you'd find Fried Green Tomatoes boring. i can't think of a person that has actually seen the film that would think so. [anyone who responds and says they do will be smacked upside the head!]
i'm not sure what you mean by 'a mean, nasty film', but Mean Creek is definitely not feel-good, if that's what you mean. but its intense, and the acting is amazing. but if you don't like the 'look' then you may want to steer clear. its a bit raw.
i myself hadn't wanted to see Broken Flowers at first, but its actually quite a gem. also, because i'm curious, how many of the films you titled "Must See American Indie Film' did you actually see?
it sort of seems like most of what you weren't interested in seeing was your assumptions based loosely on something that has no real depth to it. i'm not trying to be insulting or anything, obviously i really love all of these movies so of course i'd stick up for them, but i always feel a bit of pity when people are quick to refuse to see movies for the reasons you listed above, [it looks nasty, "too indie looking"]. see, there are probably a lot of films i would have never bothered with if it hadn't been for my boyfriends recommendations. i just happen to respect his taste in film--and fawn all over his opinions, so now i'll basically see anything he tells me to. its probably why i love him so much. he's my other half.
and he's also inspired nearly 50% of this list. amazing! <3

OK, first part. I saw Napolean Dynamite, but only because I was at someone's house and they refused to turn it off. Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums I tried to watch a couple of times, but I didn't get very far. I've not seen any of Lost In Translation or Little Miss Sunshine. Lost In Translation I've just not seen. I've not avoided it, but it does fit into the "Must See American Indie Film" category and Little Miss Sunshine looked like it could be good, but it stars (and I use the word loosely) Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell, so I've not gone out of my way to see that either.
You're absolutely right about my assumptions being based on nothing with any depth. All I will say is that, sometimes, I take an instant like or dislike to something and I'm pretty good at knowing what I will and won't like. I have so many films that I haven't gotten around to watching yet (I probably have around 100 films on my shelf that I've yet to watch and that's not including boxsets, both tv and film) that I just don't bother with anything that I don't think I'm going to like.
Maybe if I did, I would but, experience has shown me that if I didn't like the look of something, when I've watched it I've usually been right.
Lastly, I'm not offended and don't worry about offending me. If people did that then no one would ever say anything. Not anything interesting anyway. ;)

Mate, I had the EXACT same thoughts going through my head before I watched Little Miss Sunshine. I don't like either Kinnear nor Carell...but you'd be surprised, they tone things done here and they are MUCH more funnier for it. I was never planning on seeing it but to my surprise it was fantastic indie filmmaking fare. Not only will you not be annoyed by Kinnear or Carell, but you'll actually care about their characters too  . I don't wanna hype it up too much incase you're disappointed, but if there is any 'indie flick of the year' to choose from then it's that. You can't see you not liking it, I just can't.
Anyways, BRILLIANT list Ash!! Your list is VERY identical to mine, though I have some of your key films higher on my list. I wish I could give you 1000+ reps for just mentioning Memento and This Is England.

In a way, I know what you mean, often indie films get over-hyped by people who are just so proud of themselves for watching something that isn't a comic book sequel (these people keep Empire magazine in business... ). I'm guessing last years 'big American indie film' would be Juno. But just because they are all American indie films doesn't mean they have anything else in common. It's a bit like saying I saw a French film once and didn't like it so I won't be watching any more!
Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums are both Wes Anderson, and you probably either like his style or you don't. Little Miss Sunshine is a little bit like The Royal Tenenbaums roadtrip so you might not like that. Apart from having Bill Murray in it, Lost In Translation is quite different; it has quite a distinctive look to it which I really like but do not know enough about your tastes to presume you would too, but I think it is worth your time.
And in defence of Napoleon Dynamite, I didn't like it at all the first time I saw it, but on being subjected to a second viewing, found myself both amused and quite charmed.

i still liked Juno, [though its not in my top 100 or anything ;)], it always kind of bugs me when people pick on it so. i think a lot of people pick on it so much because they are more annoyed by the fans rather than the movie itself.
Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums are both Wes Anderson, and you probably either like his style or you don't.
that is definitely true. i'm not a huge fan of Wes, either. its one of the main ways me and my guy disagree--he loves Wes Anderson. i do like his stuff, but i'm not in love with it or anything. i think my main concern is most of his movies are very samey.
that said, i think all the films honeykid listed, i just like 'okay.' none of them are in my top 100 list [well, except Broken Flowers, obviously]. Napolean Dynamite. :indifferent:

I love your comment about Empire magazine, I couldn't agree more. I haven't looked at a copy for about 10 years now which, coincidently, was the last time I remember seeing Drew Barrymore on the cover. ;)
I'd just like to clarify, I don't dislike or hate American indie films. Hell, I introduced my Film Studies tutor to Slacker back in the 90's. It's just that, every year, there's one in particular (often a comedy) that 'you just have to see' and, invariably, I don't because they don't look good, let alone funny. Those are the films I meant when I used the term "Must See American Indie". I started with Rushmore because that was the first one that I really remember being pushed hard in that way, usually by the same people who tell you that Seinfeld is funny. I guess you could take it back to Pulp Fiction if you wanted to or even Reservoir Dogs or Slacker, but I think that'd be disingenuous.
Pres, I remember seeing Little Miss Sunshine on your list, after reading what you wrote about it, I thought that next time it's on, I may give it a look. The problem is, as I said, I have so many films on the shelves that I've yet to see, that watching something that I'm not up for seeing has been rare over the last few years.

okay, okay. Bogus. its not as happy as the first one, but it made me laugh more, and i liked the heaven/hell/death reaper bits a lot.
Is Before Sunrise on your list yet, or has my brain farted too many times?
your brain hasn't farted. it's actually not on my Top 100 at all. i almost grouped it in with Before Sunset, like i did with Bill & Ted, but i realized its really the second one i loved. i like the first one about average.
What is is about Citizen Kane that rocks your socks? Go ahead and knock yourself out!
i know i'm going to be really bad at this, but i'll do my best.
i love this movie on several different levels. the cinematography, even to the untrained eye, is superb. the use of light and shadow, camera angles and composition was exquisite. i wanted to post about ten pictures of this gorgeous movie on my list. unfortunately the one specific scene i wanted i had a hard time finding. another thing i loved about this film is that it is so ahead of its time. even sixty years later it has a very modern feel to it--and i can't think of any other film where that is the case.
all that said, i think out of all the movies on my list, Citizen Kane is probably the most difficult to talk about, in regards to why i love it so much and what about it is so freaking amazing. there are books that have been written on the complexities and genius of Orson's visionary epic, and i certainly can't argue the value in a historical sense--but its just a film that left me fascinated and dizzy.

that pretty much sums up my feelings on it. the Mist gave me that sort of weird feeling for several days after seeing it. at the time i saw it, it was one of the most intense movies i had seen in such a long time.
and to the person who asked about the ending, it really made the movie for me. i'm a pretty huge fan of unconventional, depressing endings. i've seen a lot of people call it ridiculous or irrational. those people don't know what they are talking about.
As I was looking through it, I saw that you had Before Sunset and I thought "Great, that means that Before Sunrise will be even higher" and then I read your reply to Mark... Oh, dear. :(
yeah, i know a lot of people feel that way. most people prefer the first one, right? don't get me wrong, i adore them both--but i think i 'connected' with the second one on a much deeper level, as it focused less on the love story, and focused more on their feelings regarding their regrets. both of them, despite their enormous accomplishments, i think felt a sense of 'life passing them by', and it was incredibly well-done. i think the end made me well up a bit.
One question, have you only seen the American ending to The Descent? If not, which do you prefer?
i think i saw the British version. the American version just cut's out a couple minutes at the end, right? that would have made the movie significantly less-good!

mark, i've been meaning to ask you. are you still updating your Top 100 list? i noticed some movies on there with no numbers on them. i was thinking of doing the same thing with mine. i know i'll see movies in the future that i'll love and want to give some love!
Yes. Partway through my list, I mentioned that if I had made the list any other day, I could have switched out at least half of the films, so Tatty suggested making a Top 200. I decided that I'd add other films which were worthy of being in my Top 100, so I keep adding them, and I will continue to do so. I didn't see the point of making it a separate thread because then it'd be out of context. I also don't see the point of changing up the numbers, but when the total number of films gets to a big round number, I may change the title of the thread to increase the number above 100.

that seems like a pretty good idea, and i think i'll do the same. i noticed you added The Last Picture Show recently, did you only just see it?
No. If you look at my previous addition, Easy Rider, I mentioned that I first saw those two films together as a reissued double bill. I believe it was 1973 or 1974. 1973 was the first year I could legitly get into R-rated movies by myself. :) I just rewatched it specifically so I could add it to the list. I'm sure I've seen Easy Rider at least 25 times and The Last Picture Show a good dozen.

I also don't see the point of changing up the numbers, but when the total number of films gets to a big round number, I may change the title of the thread to increase the number above 100.
sounds good. the only thing that makes me apprehensive about occasionally adding movies to my list is: i'm terrible at writing reviews. it just doesn't come naturally to me, and if i only add one or two at a time, i'll feel more obligated to actually say something about them. but the thing is, there are a lot of movies out there i haven't seen. some really obvious good ones, too. i've never seen Jaws, for instance. please, no one scream at me for that, there's probably 50 more out there i haven't seen yet that i should have. :( and last night, i saw American Werewolf in London for the first time ever. [loved it, would have put it in my list if i could have].
the thing is, i wasn't allowed to see pretty much anything as a kid, except for mainly PG, and even at that it was a bit limited. my Mother was what you could call overbearing. i had a lot of catching up to do, but i only really got into movies around 21-ish.
but yeah, i'll probably throw 11-20 up sometime tomorrow!

Nice top ten. :)
Well, I can still remember not so long ago when you had a Favorite Movie list connected with each post and what most of them were. (Maybe you can go ahead and put up the new one now?) But there were a few changeups on here, unless I'm really going Alzheimer's (I probably am.)
Well, the six which would qualify for me are Children of Men, The Sound of Music, Aladdin, Spirited Away, Breakfast at Tiffany's (even w/ Mickey Rooney) and Amélie. The thing which I really loved about Aladdin, and I'm guessing that you may have seen it as a wee youngster in the theater, is the stuff at the beginning where everything is so dark, and then the stars and the gold all start glowing. That's really cinematic to me and would be a good way to turn somebody on to movies, no matter what their age.

your right, my favorite movie list was different to the top 10 here. albeit, most of them found their place on my top 100 somewhere. but there were a few that didn't make the cut at all. well, only two that i can think of, really. when i made that list though, i literally just listed the first ten movies that came to mind. i hadn't strategically thought out a real top 10 list or anything. now that i have, i should re-do it with the new list!
Aladdin probably isn't the best Disney movie ever, but it will always be my ultimate favorite. i was about 11 or so when it came out--wait, let me do the math--about 10-years-old.
the Wizard of Oz is the first memory i have connected to movies. i think it's literally the first movie i ever saw. i was about four. i loved it so much, i think i watched it every single day for a year or something. and i was in a play when i was in the second grade. :) and i was in a play of the Sound of Music in the fourth grade! :D
Well, I thought the intro was quite stunning in a dark theater. This is what I'm talking about, here; say, about from the 2:45 mark to the 6:15 one. :)

Thank God you included Breakfast At Tiffany's and Amelie. 25th Hour and The Station Agent are two films that I wouldn't mind seeing sometime. I have Children Of Men sitting, unwatched, on one of my shelves (one of my many unwatched dvd's I'm afraid.) As for the other 5 films... Erm... I'm glad you like them? Seriously though, I know that they're many people's favourites, but I really can't stand them and, if I never see them again, it'll be too soon.
Not a bad list though, I've just had a count and I liked 30 of them, which isn't bad when you consider that I haven't seen almost half of them, for one reason or another.
Thanks for sharing ash. :)

i think a lot of people feel like that. mark said when he made his list, on any other day he could have listed a number of other movies. i realized if i kept worrying about that too much i'd never make one, so i finally bit the bullet and did. but i like the idea of adding new additions to the list, deeming them 'list worthy'
this thread will probably turn into my own little review thread. yay!

i've watched a couple movies that i think appropriately need to be praised, so here goes. :)
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
http://www.culturefeast.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/pride-and-prejudice-1.jpg
i'd just first and foremost like to say that i really went into this not even thinking i'd be all that thrilled with it. the only reason i actually watched it is because a friend of mine [a male friend, no doubt!], kept going on and on about it.
i had no real reason to think i wouldn't like this; i hadn't really heard anything bad about it, actually i know it was well received. i think i was just being a snob; i have a hard time watching Keira Knightly; and while i do like movies set in this time period usually, i don't usually fall in love with them.
well, i fell in love with this one. let me just say i've never even read the book it is based on, but i'm certainly going to be picking up a copy of it sometime in the future. it was heartwarming, sweet, delightful, and Keira Knightly literally blew me away--i can't believe i'm saying that, but her performance was so much fun to watch. there were even a few times, when all she did was have a certain look or smile on her face, and i literally said 'wow' out loud. she was quite literally a breath of fresh air.
the ball room scenes, [a cliche norm for any period peice as this!] were entertaining as hell, and the dialogue between all the characters was sharp, witty, and really-well done. the cinematography was gorgeous and enough reason alone to watch. there were a number of scenes that were so well done, for instance the scene with Elizabeth Bennet/Kiera Knightly on the swing when she is approached by her friend to hear she is engaged to Mr. Collins, the raining scene, and of course the ending [which made me smile and feel all schmooply].
i feel like having not read the novel i can't really say how much of a likeness it was to it, but i have heard some complain that it is very condensed compared to it--which is something you can usually expect from a classic novel.
for sure, i'd say this is a must-see, i really have a hard time thinking anyone would go away from this without liking it--but i recommend if you're male, to watch it with your girlfriend/wife/fiance! i think it would be more well-received on both ends. :)

Heavenly Creatures (1994)
http://www.filmreference.com/images/sjff_01_img0217.jpg
i actually had a hard time with this one.
i went into it not knowing what to expect; all i knew was i had heard really good things and was expecting brilliance, but i didn't really know anything about the film itself. upon first viewing, i was so overwhelmed with the subject matter, and the actors performances it was almost hard for me to say that i enjoyed it. i didn't think it was badly done, but i guess i didn't really know what the director was trying to really say, and i really didn't know what to think of our two lead actresses. these two girls, who were in much more of a fantasy land than me and my friends ever were at that age [the fantasy bits in the movie were absolutely breathtaking, by the way]; it was a mixture of awe and fear.
however, after watching the ending, i nearly **** myself. it was so abrupt, and raw, much different than the rest of the movie. even at this point i didn't really know what to think about it, but it left me with such a queer feeling [the first sign of a successful film!] that i went straight to Google to do some reading. that is when i found out that it was actually based on a very true story, which even made me more in awe. i went to bed that night thinking about it still, and i think i even had a dream. when i woke up in the morning i was still thinking about it, all through work, and when i got home that night i rewatched it.
my second viewing was different than the first. i was still in awe, and i realized i actually really loved this movie, but watching it wasn't exactly what i would call enjoyable. it left me with a really unsettling feeling, even still. there was something terrifying about it, and it's almost like a train-wreck that i can't quite make myself turn away from.
after i read the Heavenly Creatures debate on Mofo i realized i wouldn't be able to write a proper review on it. this is a bit of a mess, actually. i recommend everyone should read the debate that some other members had on it a year or so ago [found here (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=13447&highlight=disturbing)]; and after you've read it, i dare you not to get the urge to watch it yourself.

I loved Heavenly Creatures, I still think it's Jackson's best film. Can't say the same about Pride & Prejudice though, a pretty average, by-the-numbers version as I remember it, though I can't say that I'm a fan of the source material either. Glad you liked it though and, may I suggest seeing the mid 90's BBC production of Pride & Prejudice. As I said, I'm not a fan, but that's the one that most people rave about over here.

I really enjoyed looking threw your top 100
It was really great too see Little Women and Fried Green Tomatoes on your list. I haven't seen Rabbit Proof Fence in a moons age thanks for the reminder. Repulsion is a deeply distrubing psychological film. I felt so Agitated while watching and after watching this film. Network, respect. It's a Wonderful Life, Hotdog have you seen anything else of Frank Capra's ? American Psycho is one of those films I felt like I shouldn't be laughing yet with every new insane encounter I found myself laughing even harder, truely dazzing dark comedy. A Christmas Story Classic. Plus huge reps for putting a holiday film in your top 100. I've always found it hard. It's a Wonderful Life is in my top 100 but for me I don't relagate it too holiday film views or see it as a holiday film. Paper Moon Bogdanovich best in my opinion but if you haven't seen What's up Doc ? I truely beileve it would be to your tastes. The King of Kong, I recently watched this. One of the Rogers video store clerks recommended it very satirical, charmingly simple, and obssesive. Hands down the only film I really didn't care for in your list was The Mist. It just wasn`t my cup of tea.
Another recommendation if you haven`t seen The Women (1939) directed by George Cukor after seeing The Phildelphia Story¸in your list which I love as well.
Again fantasic list.

Wow, Ash. Really fun list! It feels so personal since so many of the choices are obviously personal favorites that don't necessarily fall into "the cannon" of the all-time great movies. Also, I like the new (to me, at least) avatar from Eyes Without a Face (surprised it didn't make your list) even though it kind of creeps me out.
