Yep, Happy Birthday
OK! So now you're my age for about four months. Plus, my wife and I just happened to get married on your birthday 21 years ago.

Hey, thanks, guys! I just love all the greetings and the Sean pictures!
Boromir!

YEA!!
I had a wonderful Vietnamese lunch down near D.C. and went to the "Newseum" today. It's a journalism museum. Wonderful place with all sorts of great interactive stuff, videos, and headlines/newspapers all the way back to 14 something... and they have bits of other cool stuff, like Mark Twain's pen and twill set (he hated being a journalist) and the hanging chads from Florida in 2000!
Cool place. If you ever come to DC, you should check it out if you love history and news.
I gave myself a four day weekend for my birthday but did nothing with my time off yesterday except hang around here much of the day. ;)
Tonight -- *drumroll* -- grading papers.
Happy Anniversary, Mark. :D
happy birthday!! hope it was great! :D

Happy Birthday!
Sorry I missed this before! Happy Birthday tramp. :) Extended weekends are the best, eh?
And thanks for the tip on the Newseum; I'm tentatively planning to go back to DC early next year and will definitely keep that in mind.
Yea, Yoda wished me a Happy Birthday!!!!
;)
Yea, check out the Newseum. It's incredibly cool. I've been there 2 times and each time I wasn't able to see it all (both times I was limited on time.)
BTW, they had a story there about a photojournalist who had taken a picture of a dying child in the Sudan (I think) and a vulture that was hovering nearby. It became a very famous pic. People gave him a hard time about not helping the child (he was told not to because of disease) and he felt terrible about it, responding, "I am very sorry, very sorry, that I didn't pick up the child."
Soon afterward, he committed suicide. He was 33.
I was standing in front of this pic crying. It was incredibly powerful.
There's other stuff there too -- part of the World Trade Center in their 9/11 exhibit. The whole place is full of amazing images, video...
Sorry for that tangent. I just think it's an amazing museum.
Thanks to everyone for their birthday wishes. :D
Yeah, unfortunately I'd heard that story; my grandma has a book of Pulitzer-prize winning photographs and, on days when we were there with little to do (like waiting around for dinner on Thanksgiving), I would flip through the entire thing. Each photograph had notes, including the one you just mentioned.
Still have the image of the photograph in my mind. Not the kind of thing one shakes off easily. But fascinating in how simple photographs have the power to change lives for both the better and the worse.
I knew the picture, but I did not know the photographer had died. :(
When I get to the photojournalism part of my class, I absolutely love it. The old saying that a "picture is worth a 1,000 words" is absolutely true. The students love it when we look at them. It always leads to a great discussion.
They were 7 when 9/11 happened and yet many of them remembered the pic of the second plane about to crash into the South Tower. That image is seared into their memories.
I was the same age when Kennedy was shot, and I never forgot the picture of little John-John saluting his father. That image never left me.
Powerful stuff.
