So, did anyone catch the pilot of Fringe last night? Once again Mr Abrams has managed to grasp my attention and entirely scramble my brains and make my nipples hard in the process. This times its quite an original and interesting premise. Fringe science. The type of science that’s more Sci-Fi than sci-reality. Telekenesis. Weather control. Mind control. Reanimation. Etc. Its like the X-Files all over again. And I loved it!

Whilst not entirely brilliant, (Like the Lost pilot) I thought it had moments of wonder. The evil corporation. Robot hand woman. Melty face people. Mind meetings. And the best bit? I loved John Noble as Dr Bishop. I have a new John Locke I think :)
What did everyone else think? In the mood for more?

I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I just can't work up enough care to watch it. J.J has used up his credit with me. Alias was great.
Lost was good the first season, jumped the shark and was just M'kay the rest.
Cloverfield made me want to shoot J.J. I'm done with him.
Now if Fringe keeps getting rave reviews, I may pick up the boxed DVD set at the library in a few years.
*shrug*
Bleached, you shold give this one a try. I'm tired of JJ too, and I almost passed on this one, but I am quite glad I didnt.
I cant stand the lead girl character (she grates on my nerves), but with that plot twist I totally hooked now. The science of it is very intriguing, and I'm surprised that the guy they have playing the son of Bishop worked out so well. When he first showed up, I was kinda....iffy.
The only flaw I find with the entire plot line, is that lack of Average Joes. I mean. Cmon. Its almost unrealistic. Everyone has an IQ of 190, everyone's cutting edge. Everyone's light years ahead of the rest of of.
I can see Bishop as Locke in one sense, but in another, not so much. Because yes, Locke is that strange guy - but he was also that little guy you're rooting for.
At some level, all of these characters are Titans in their own rights. Its overwhelming, and it bloats the plot. I mean. The really smart people are doing really smart things that no one understands....unless they are really smart.
I think JJ needs to ground this story in a gritty reality, with a very primal character whose IQ is not above average - or, even if we forget IQ for second, if he just uses a very commonplace person.

If I get bored this week (on my relaxing vacation) I may just dial it up on the web and give it a shot.
Thanks Mack!
Lost jumped the shark? How so?
At least stuff actually happens in season 2. Yeah, Season 2 is one of the best, sorry!

Season 2 was when Micheal killed people he didn't have to kill destroying his character in a very thin storyline. That was when the show jumped the shark for me and my family. We were disgusted and dissappointed.
It was also the season that Kate and the male lead turned from questionable, interesting, and hot heros into whiny brats.
When a show deconstructs it's characters that way, it destroys itself. Many shows do this. I can't stand it. There are far better ways for characters to change than to make them unlikeable.
I just don't agree. If someone took your child and gave you a choice between your kid, and killing a person you barely knew, what would you do? Completely believable. I don't recall Jack and Kate whining. Alas, I DID get a bit sick of Jack and Kate at the start of season 3 (the show's low point for me). I thought they focused in on them too much, sort of losing the ensemble feel to the show. Also, don't forget Michael killed one of the people by accident.
That said, the creators have acknowledged their mistakes with those characters and rectified them, as of late. The show certainly hasn't been perfect for its entire run, but it is still some of the most interesting and compelling TV in a prime-time slot, IMO.
I like a lot of the other characters more, anyway, so I guess Jack and Kate can fall a bit without taking too much away from the entire experience for me. Characters like Ben, Locke, and Sayid are more interesting to me, I guess.
Fair play, though. Not for everyone, I guess.
Anyway, I don't want to hijack Blib's Fringe thread! We can chat more in the Lost thread...

I thought it was pretty good, I'll keep checking out for a few more weeks at least. I like J.J. just fine. Lost is the best show on television (when its on) and as someone here pointed out to me awhile ago J.J. isn't even running that show anymore so to blame him for whatever you don't like about Lost isn't really accurate.
Anyway, Fringe seemed pretty interesting so consider me tuned. My nipples didn't get hard though. Is that a British thing?

This is starting this Sunday here so ill watch it and let you know what I thought! from what ive seen it is looking awesome.

Ehhh, started this one. Can't share your enthusiasm, get tired of the scientist always having an answer and a little 5 minute exposition to make every episode follow exactly the same formula. Very lazy writing. The characters aren't that interesting, too many standalone episodes and not really developing an intriguing overarching narrative to keep me hooked, as of episode 5. It's much X-Files crossed with Alias which were both infinitely more interesting.
Fringe has officially been renewed for a second season (22 episodes)....Can't wait!!!! :D

Reminder: Fringe Returns For Season 2
http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/fringe-2009-01.jpg
Fringe is back for a 2nd season, don’t forget!
Last season Olivia (Anna Torv) met William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) in the alternate reality, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) has a secretive past only hinted at, Walter Bishop (John Noble) has what looks like a serious ethical nightmare to deal with and the FBI is just confused in general about what their Fringe department does. I think we have lots of material ripe for discussion!
Fringe is moving to Thursdays, starting tonight, September 17th.

Just saw part-1 of the second season finale.
Damn, that was the best episode yet!
http://i40.tinypic.com/mii4wz.jpg
We got to see a lot of the parallel world here, including their version of the Fringe Division and some of Walternate's evil plans for Peter.
I liked Olivia's double's look.
http://i39.tinypic.com/33keoth.jpg
The alternate universe's Fringe folks work under a different idea than our Fringe folks do.
They investigate "natural environmental disasters" caused by holes in the fabric of the universe. Or so they were lead to believe.
Walternate reveals to them they are actually being invaded by another universe.

Can't wait for the finale next week.

I also loved the subtle differences they gave us in the parallel universe.
Kentucky Grilled Chicken was one.
I guess the Big Crunch is the same in both universes according to Walter.

We had a Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 cover with Supergirl holding Superman's body instead of the other way around, A Death of Batman cover similar to the Death of Superman one, a Red Lantern/Red Arrow comic, a Man of Steel Returns instead of Dark Knight Returns, and a JLA cover with Jonah Hex instead of Guy Gardner.

DC Comics confused the hell out of it's fans earlier this week when they released the Red Lantern/Red Arrow image on their site.
They released the other alternate universe covers today.

Also they gave us another glimpse at entertainment in the other universe when, during the shootout near the end, the movie theatre in the background appeared to be playing Superman vs Batman, Indianna Jones and the Men of the ?? (couldn't make it out).
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/6696/vlcsnap2010052109h09m00.jpg (http://img694.imageshack.us/i/vlcsnap2010052109h09m00.jpg/)
There was also a Smokey and the Bandit: The Final Lap movie and a Mask vs Joker flick.
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/5966/vlcsnap2010052109h10m06.jpg (http://img686.imageshack.us/i/vlcsnap2010052109h10m06.jpg/)
Unless you're pausing and zooming, most people wouldn't even notice some of this stuff, it showed it so fast.
Still really cool that they took the time to do it though.

I saw the twist with Olivia coming a mile away.
I wonder how long it will be until Peter and Walter figure it out.
Really looking forward to next season. :D

This thread seriously needs to be bumped. Unfortunately not many Fringe fans are on this site, but for those who are this might interest you.
Fringe to Continue as Comic Book "If" Canceled by Fox
"Fringe" executive producer Jeff Pinker recently spoke at this year's WonderCon about making a comic book for the sci-fi series, if Fox doesn't bring the show back. The show would be following in the footsteps of "Smallville", which became a comic book series after ending its 10-season run.
Here is how producer Jeff Pinker described the comic, if it comes to fruition:
"It would be really elaborate and we would go to town on it and make sure that everything you needed to understand about the show would be in that and pay off that way. That's our back up plan."
The producer also said that if they don't get picked up for another season, they will probably publish one special edition comic.
"Fringe" returns Friday, March 23 at 9 PM ET on Fox with 'Episode 4.15: A Short Story about Love', the first original episode in a month.
"Fringe" episode 4.15, "A Short Story About Love" airs on Fox March 23rd, 2012. The episode stars Joshua Jackson, Lance Reddick, Anna Torv, Blair Brown, Jasika Nicole, Seth Gabel, John Noble and is directed by J.H. Wyman.

Comic? They can **** off with that. Whilst I still don't want it to be cancelled, it does seem to be veering towards going off the rails. I think we're up to episode 14 over here and I'm yet to be convinced by this season.
I have seen the first season of this film
It is fasinating
I love Fringe especially Dr Bishop:)
^Yes, it becomes even more so, off the rails, though the rails are attached by those thingies, what are they called, those 'Lost' thingamaboodles, though it is still more connected in the since that it isn't having to create a mystic metaphysical aura for ratings sake, only compeling thingies for sci-fi junkies. No better than TorchWood, not all that much worse though. oh boy if that show is very popular I'll get it. If it isn't I'll also get it; Takes a lickin.' I'm tired of being a habitual thiller novels and tv shows person.
I'm not reading this thread, because I just started watching Fringe. I'm halfway through season 1. I'm sure I'll have plenty to say. :) I'll just have to say it in here very carefully, and not read much of what's come before for the time being.

I quit a long time ago because it was getting too goofy, especailly for a show that originally was promoting itself as a more realistic version of the X Files.
Too many of these fantastic shows with continuing storylines, and that includes Alias, seem like the writers are making it up as they go along instead of having worked out the plot in advance, and some of them have admitted that is the case.
Seeing as how I want to watch a less realistic version of The X-Files, that's good to hear.

I'm about 5 or 6 episodes into the final season and the only reason I'm watching atm is because I've watched the previous 4 seasons. It always had the potential to leave the rails and, for me, after just staying on the right side for a season/season and a half, it's gone over. It's been a good ride, though. :)

This is on Netflix for us now and I'm watching it too, just a few eps in. I dig it.
As some you've mentioned you aren't that far in the series, I will say things are summing up nicely, tying loose ends. Mid way through the series starts going off rails, and then starts getting back on, sort of a compilacted scheme yet coming together in the last couple seasons, sort like the way it is coming together, and it is coming together, in the final season, not too shabby, not at all, stick with it.
Appreciate the vagueness with which you said that. :) If anyone else wants to talk openly, that's cool, though I'd appreciate spoiler tags/warnings, otherwise I'll just have to bail on the entire thread for a month or two until I'm caught up.
Anyway, I just finished season 1, so, you know...spoilers for season 1 ahead:
Very cool stuff. I like that they're "going there" already. Might be better to parcel it out a little slower, but the ending packs a nice punch. I did figure the Peter twist about halfway through the finale, and man, it's a really perfect twist. Looking back that'd been planting all sorts of hints about that. Good job laying the groundwork on that, and really nice reveals at the end, with both the gravestone and the WTC.
I guess the highest praise I can give this show is that I genuinely have no idea what could happen in the next four seasons. I can sort of guess what might happen next, in season 2; the fallout from Peter discovering his origin (if he does), and the "war" beginning (though we still don't know what kind of war it is, exactly), and maybe not ending until the series does. But beyond that, I have no idea. I feel like they've either put all the pieces out and now have to find ways to move them around in interesting ways for 80 more episodes, or else they just have to keep piling more insane revelations, season after season.
It definitely lacks the incredible energy and sense of wonder that Lost had, but then, I think any show that attempts to weave a sci-fi mythology is bound to fall short of that, simply by virtue of coming after it. I hope it reaches those kinds of heights at least occasionally, but even if it doesn't, it's been a solid, gutsy effort so far. Looking forward to more. :)
Sans spoilers, what's everyone's favorite season, for those of you who are all caught up? Is there a consensus? On Metacritic the ratings seem to tick up after season 1, with 2-3-4 all about the same.

I thought Season 3 is the strongest so far, but I'm only just about see the fourth, so I may have to change that. It's a good show and I'm glad I didn't give up on it.
Aw man, the opening of season 2 was awesome. When (spoilers)...
...she went flying through the windshield an hour after the car crash, I lost it. That was so cool.
Almost done with season 4. I just watched the episode...you know the one...where they do that crazy thing that upends the entire show. Not sure how I feel about it yet. I dislike it in a general sense, but given the situation they wrote themselves into, it might be the best of a series of bad choices. Still doesn't make it good, though.
I think the bulk of season 4 has been a big, big mistake. Spoilers follow...
...writing Peter out of existence was a mistake. But even so, salvageable in any number of ways. Bringing him back only to have no one remember him? That compounded the mistake. They wasted half a season treading water and basically resetting all the characters we'd come to care about. By having all of them but Olivia (and her, only after a dozen episodes) not remember Peter, they're either a) saying the first three seasons of the show don't "count" any more or b) they're just going to all get their memories back, in which case the whole thing was just running in circles. Big error.
It looks even bigger now that we're further along, too, because the last handful of episodes, which have been about the way the two universes are slowly learning about each other, has proven to be a rich vein. This stuff should've been all of season 4, because it's worked tremendously well. The war between the universe is over, so season 4 is about the diplomacy and the peace, presumably while some new threat to the both of them begins to take form. Instead, we don't start getting to that stuff for a dozen episodes. Just a big ol' unforced error.
Anyway, the jump forward in season 4 (which is the last episode we've seen) is gutsy as all get-out. It'd be gutsy even at the very end of the very beginning of a season, but with a few episodes to go? That's downright bizarre. We'll see where they go with it, though. Does feel a little sharky-jumpy, though. We shall see.
Three episodes left. I should finish Fringe tonight.

One of my favorite shows. Even with that abysmal final season. Don't even get me started on the product placements. I can't remember if it was season 5 or not, but when they started being more aggressive with the product placements, especially the ones with the weird lingering close-ups of the car I was just turned off. But through it all the show still managed to hold a special place in my heart.

It's been so long now that I wonder if I should rewatch this series. When I saw the dates of our original banter about it, I was a bit amazed that it was that long ago!
One of my favorite shows. Even with that abysmal final season..
The final season was so good. How was it abysmal? The show only got stronger as it went along for me. Obviously, there are holes in the time travel stuff, but that is true for all time travel stories, really.
I loved the final season. It pulled all the observer stuff together into a really cool Orwellian nightmare theme, while also peppering call-backs to the all the other seasons and fringe events throughout. The idea of the Fringe team using many of the previous phenomena to fight against the observers was really fun. Sure, they borrow liberally from other films and shows, such as The Matrix, but they did it in a way that was creative enough to set it apart as its own take on those concepts. Except for the Peter stuff with the implanted tech, which was pretty much lifted wholesale from The Matrix. Luckily, they didn't focus on it for long, ad in the end, it didn't really play a part in the defeat of the observers.
My wife and I were both commenting on how so many shows don't end well...I'm looking at you GoT! Fringe, for the most part, ended in a satisfying way for us, focused mostly on the characters, including all the excellent side characters, like Lincoln and Fauxlivia. I would rank season 5 as my second favorite season, just behind the fantastic season 3. If I had to choose a least favorite season, it would be season 1, which sort of feels like an X-Files close. Not a bad thing, but the show isn't as interesting without the main overarching plot it eventually gets into with The Other Side, etc.
Overall, a great show, and I am glad we decided to give it a second chance. We had originally just sort of gotten away from it after missing a few season 3 episodes when it originally ran. Glad we got back to it!
Listen, it's been a while. Aside from all the great moments it had (and it had many) I can't shake the bitter taste of that finale. I just remember really hating it and all those crazy product placements. But it says a lot about the show if I can still say it's a favorite, surely. :D

I do recall some sort of pop-up car commercials in the 4th season, but I feel like that stuff was pretty absent from the final season. Same goes for the cell phone focus in some episodes. That type of product placement was fairly prevalent in the 2000's, and I especially remember 24 being really bad in that regard. That said, that stuff never really bothered me, I guess.

Doesn't bother me, either. In fact, I'd almost rather see, for example, a real can of Diet Coke in a scene than a fake can of some fake-named Diet Colarama or whatever. I NOTICE things that look a LITTLE off a lot more than I'd notice something that is already part of daily life. Same with things like laptops. I'd rather see a Dell computer than some unbranded generic thing that NOBODY owns. (Although I take issue with 24 having used so many MACS when in reality they would have been using PCs.) :D

I feel like they switched at one point, but I might be misremembering...

I started a rewatch last night. I figured I'd just watch the pilot.
I watched five episodes in a row before I realized what I was doing. Today I have to catch up on all the work I didn't do last night while I was rewatching Fringe. :D

Oh my gosh... I'm on episode 16 of that first season and I'm thoroughly enjoying this rewatch.
They need to collect some monster larvae crawling out of a wound on a corpse.
Walter: "Get a petri dish."
The body opens up to reveal hundreds or thousands of larvae.
"Better make it a bucket!"
Astrid says, "I think I'm gonna be sick."
"Make it two buckets!"
I had really forgotten just how fun the banter on this show is.

I'm wrapping up season 3. I've had episodes on in the background off and on all day every day as I work (since this is a rewatch). I'd forgotten all the crazy places this show went.
I'd like to make a list of all the names Walter calls Astrid. I'm watching with subtitles this time, so I caught one in this current episode (321): Ostrich. :D
Astrid
Asterisk
Ostrich
Others? I cheated and checked online. Wikipedia has this to say:
She is stationed in the lab with Walter, who can never remember her name (e.g. calling her "Asterix" [sic], "Aspirin", "Asteroid", "Astro", "Ostrich", "Aphid", "Esther", "Ashram", "Alex", "Afro", "Astrif", "Agnes", "Asner", etc.).
In season 4 he calls her Claire, and she asks, "Really?" :D
And of course I love that they use a Selectric to communicate with the alternate universe. <3

New one, season 5, episode 12: Asgard...
:D
Love the show. We finished it up a while back, and it was satisfying from start to finish. I know the final season is contentious, but we loved it!
