I take really, really good care of my dvds and cds as well. I can't stand it when people leave discs lying around loose! They make me so mad I could bite the wings off the demons crawling from my ears!
How do you keep yours?

I keep my DVD's in their boxes when I'm not watching them. It also annoys me when I see my Screen Histories lecturer holding a dvd with his thumb rubbing against the shiny half of the disc, who himself gets annoyed when the film keeps skipping. Is it really so hard to hold a DVD with your fingers around the edges?

I know!
Gee, I wonder why it doesn't work?
I have OCD when it comes to discs.

Did anyone else see a news story about a research that supposedly shows DVDs don't hold data forever but rather about 5 years? http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc220/diezelpower/vruce.gif

Actually, I did see that.
Supposedly they degrade, but I have dvds older than 5 years.
I think it's probably over decades, not years.

I've heard that, and I once heard that VHS wouldn't last long, either. Tell that to my movie from 1985, that still plays just fine.
I have DVDs that are older than 5 years, as well.

And if you have trouble playing an older DVD most likely its the DVD player not the disc.

Older dvd player skipped and stuck like motherf**Kers!
And that damn pixelation thing...

I read that DVDs can last about 100 years.

Anyway, I keep mine in their cases and I am the biggest FREAK in regards to keeping my cases nice. Security sticker residue on a DVD case KILLS me -- I swear that glue is my kryptonite. I also always make sure I have the DVD that's in the best condition before I buy it. Any imperfection on the DVD case bugs me.

Someone once borrowed one of my Kill Bill DVDs and the case came back scratched in several places AND I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT.

I keep mine in my cases as well. I won't freak out or anything if they are out, but they are a whole lot easier to find if they are in the cases, and it keeps them in better shape.

I'm completely manic about keeping my DVD's well cared for, there's nothing worse than when I rent from Blockbuster and the DVD has thousands of fingerprints over it,:furiousdevil: makes me want to hunt down the last person that rented said DVD and........ I'd better stop now!:yup: :scream:

When I buy a dvd, usually used and there's a scratch on it, or (gasp) several, it bugs me bad, even if the dvd plays fine!

Oh, this will be like nails on a chalkboard!
My brother-in-law, to "fix" them scrubs them on the carpet!
Then wonders why they don't work.

weeeell, I'm going to be in the minority here, yeah I keep mine in their cases an all but I'm not precious about them. I buy a lot of asian dvds from my favourite sites and I like to lend them out and people leave my house with dvds pressed into their hands as long as they promise to watch 'em I'll be happy. I love it when people are knocked out by a film they've never heard of and would never have dreamed of watching.

Sometimes the dvds don't come back, but I know they might've made their own way out into the world converting other people with their magic...or they might be on someones floor somewhere...but that's a chance I'll take :)

My DVDs are well loved in their beautiful cases. However. I do have some problems losing the cases when the DVD is in the player.

I try to take very good care of my DVD's... but will loan all but a few out... so, once in a while, I either get one back scratched or not at all... I also treat borrowed or rental DVD's just like my own...

Completely false. I started buying CDS for my fancy new Discman back in....hmmm, 86 maybe, or maybe 87. I still have these CDs and they all play and look fine.

I mean, entropy states ALL things degrade, but not in such a short time span as a few years... Although I do remember some warnings back then that the things were going to degrade, but I thought they estimated something like 30-50 years...

My 22+ year old discs are working fine, though...

That's factory made discs though. I think the writeable have a shorter lifespan...

Why would they? Isn't the process the same?

Being an internet thief and all, I'm more interested in home made disc endurance...http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc220/diezelpower/vruce.gif

Apparently those discs have a different, and somewhat more fragile coating...

Really though, By the time these things degrade, I have a feeling Player incompatibility will be much more of an issue than disc life. If we take into account Moore's law, DVDs will not last long enough to have to worry about degredation.

I mean, don't you have your Matter Compiled Nanograph discs yet? ;)

I've got DVDs over 5 years old, some nearing 10 years and there all fine.

I take really good care of my DVDs. If im not watching a DVD it's in its case. I even take good care of the cases, especially when they have a slipcover. If the slipcover gets damaged i get so pissed off. Im the same with my CDs :P. I once bought another copy of an album by Megadeth because the case broke and i couldnt find a case to replace it. (It was a double album.)

I've posted this before, but if you ever get a scratched up DVD, that won't play anymore, more than likely, a burned copy of it will still play. I've done this to a few of our DVDs, that ended up not playing, due to numerous scratches.

my dvds are in very good condition thanks to those cases. If I were to lose my cases, all chaos would break loose and end up with a similar fate as many of my burned cds...as cheap and disposable coasters

I keep DVDs in amazzing condition my wife says im really anal about then. As I keep them in order and sequels together etc. I was very annoyed on Sat as I went to watch The Bourne Identity and the disc was ruined and would only play so far. I know that a m8 borrowed it a while ago and now its nakkered. So im going to have to buy it again, im most prob going to get the trilogy boxset.

My DVDs are OK. Well my brother doesnt realy treat them well but i don't think any DVDs i own don't work properly. BUT the ones i borrow from Blockbuster is a completly diffrent story. 9/10 of the DVDs i borrow will stuff up atleast once.

Yeah it does work quite well just dont spray it to close to the disc. There are afew places that have the facility to repair them for you, my local Gamestation does it and charge a few quid.

From what I posted about one of my DVDs its so knackered it wont get fixed.

I really look after my DVDs, and only lend them to friends who respect other peoples property. Some of my friends manage to smear jam on DVDs, don't ask me how or why. Other friends appear to take sandpaper to DVDs, it must be a hobby of theirs.

Wife - What are you doing dear?

Husband - Oh you know, just chillin' out, sandpapering Matt's DVDs.

Wife - Oh that's nice dear, tea's nearly ready.

I buy alot of my films second hand, some of them have lots of scuff marks, luckily I have a friend that works for 'Games Station' he puts them in the buffing machine for me:)

thats nothing i recently borrowed my friend my coveted bladerunner final cut in immaculate tin,i went round other day to see a 30 odd dvd stack at the side of his player and guess what was at the bottom! That said i once lent him a vhs of metro which he then denied he had ever had and i never saw it again so it's not always bad.

I keep mine neat and extremely organized but I'm not against taking a dvd out and flipping it over on my player. If it gets dust I clean it with the same products and cloths as my glasses. None of my dvds skip or freeze. As far as renting, I take care of those puppies because I want other people to enjoy the movie I just finished watching.
