View Full Version : Discuss: MoFo Oscar Chat (February 24th)!
Well, by now some of you have probably seen the announcement (http://www.movieforums.com/community/announcement.php?f=2). We're holding a scheduled Oscar chat the evening of Sunday, February 24th.
Figured the event could use its own thread for people to discuss it, RSVP, make advance suggestions, etc.
And, if I may indulge in a little PR, I've showed an unfinished version of the chat room to a couple of people, and the response has been extremely positive so far. I think you guys are really going to like it. :)
So, who's in?

Coolio.
I've invited a friend over and frankly she has much nicer legs than you lot, but if she can't make it you know I'll be here.
As long as I am not stuck on a late housecall I will attend.

Sounds sweet. I have an engagement that night, but I'll try to catch what I can if I get back in time.
I'm going to attend! Sounds sweet
on a side note: awww I don't have 777 posts anymore.
I'll probably be in the hospital that night. But we'll see.
that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that.

Can't make it, Yoda. I'll be in L.A. for the Oscars. My best friend and I always stay at the Renaissance Hotel across from the Kodak Theatre to see celebs, eat at fine restaurants, and watch the Oscars on their flat screen tvs. I'll be thinking of you guys though.

WOAH. AM i jealous much? Yes. Yes is the answer.
So how far in advance do you have to book that up Darcy? I would have thought that round Oscar season, the whole place is waaaaaay booked up.

We make reservations for the next year each time we go. We've been going there since the hotel opened in 2001. You know those folks that sit on the bleachers? Some of them stay there, and all the lighting, electrical, media folks that set up then theatre stay there too. The make-up artists take up rooms too, to get the celebs red carpet ready. We have a good time meeting people. Join us next year, Blibblo!

I'd love to come but I'll probably be sleeping the sleep of the (self) righteous. In bed.
Can't even say that I'll be having thoughts about you guys either. Most probably it'll be of Maggie Cheung and a jar of Nutella.
Again...
I will try to make some appearances, although I always have my own gathering, and there is no TV in my computer room. We'll see what happens.
Obviously, the more the merrier, and we'd love to have anyone who can make it. It's a long broadcast, so I'm sure a number of people will pop in at various times. If anyone can make it, though, I think it should be fun, and I'm working on making the chat room as atmospheric as possible.
If there aren't any objections, I might compile an extremely casual RSVP-ish list in this thread's first post so we have an idea of who might come.

I may be able to pop in a few times as well, I don't have a T.V. in my computer room either, (how Un-American I know) but I'll try though.

I'll probably check in during commercial breaks, but I'm not moving my desktop so that I can watch and be on here at the same time, just too much work to do so.
So you still need help testing the chat protocol?
Aye. I need to fiddle with just a couple more things; I'll drop you a line shortly! :)

Its a great idea. I used to do an Oscar chatroom a few years ago when the BBC showed the Oscars live, but then they went a few years without bothering . Now Sky have picked it up and will be showing it starting at 11pm Sunday night. Trouble is over here that its on so late and doesn't end till like 4am or something that people on the chatroom became more and more incoherant either with fatigue or drink:D
I'll pop in and say hello early on :)
Oh no, you don't have to RSVP. I'm just trying to get a handle on who to expect.
The room will be open all night, but probably not the next day. We may have more scheduled chats in the future, however. :) Especially if this one is well-received.

That's another good thing about living on the West Coast, that The Oscars start at 5:00 in the evening and even if they run the longest they've ever run it's still over by 9:00pm or so. Though I do think part of the specialness of watching the Academy Awards the first few times when I was a kid on the East Coast was that I got to stay up extra late to do it.
The first Oscars I remember seeing a piece of was in April of 1978 when I was seven. That was the year Star Wars, my then reason for living, was up for ten Oscars. It won six, though none of the "biggies" it was up for in Picture, Director, Screenplay or Supporting Actor. I remember Ben Kenobi didn't win and I lost interest soon after, but I was such a Star Wars freakazoid my folks let me stay up and watch the first bit of the show.

The first Oscars I remember staying up to watch all the way through was the 1982 ceremony. Raiders of the Lost Ark, which had recently supplanted Star Wars as my reason for living, was up for eight awards. It won four of them, but not Picture or Director. I was eleven and I remember staying up to the bitter end, totally expecting Raiders was going to be named Best Picture - it seemed so obvious (to me, anyway). Even though I hadn't seen any of the other four Picture nominees (Reds, On Golden Pond, Atlantic City or the upset winner Chariots of Fire), I was still certain Raiders was the best. But one of my other very favorites of that year, Arthur, was up for four awards as well, and it won two of them: Gielgud as Supporting Actor and Christopher Cross' "Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do)" for Original Song, which I already had the album of (cassette tape, actually). So that was cool.
And I've seen every single Oscars in its entirety since then.

Indeed-a-la-doodly!
And as I said in The Shoutbox last week, I think I'd have to go back to 2000 and The Green Mile for the last time I hadn't seen all five nominees prior to the awards and all the way back to 1985 with A Passage to India and Places in the Heart for the last time I hadn't seen at least four of 'em. I was fourteen-years-old then. 1987 would have been the first year I had seen all five of the Picture nominees before the Oscar telecast (Platoon, The Mission, Children of a Lesser God, Hannah & Her Sisters and A Room with a View). I was on the edge of seventeen (yeah, that's right: just like Stevie Nicks).

Well, I stay up till 4am to watch wrestling once a month, so I should have no problem staying up late to watch the Oscars and join you guys in the chat room.

Doesn't Australia have more than one time zone? I believe if you live in say Sydney then the Oscars would start at 12:00NOON on Monday February 25th. That would be equivalent to 5:00pm in Los Angeles on the evening of Sunday the 24th.
I think I have that right.
So, who's in?
I will be you're Huckleberry.
I'm in.

Yeah but the time zones are only half an hour apart on either side of me, so I would of had a pretty close window. Thanks for the approx. but I'll be doing that whole working thing.

I will be missing a new episode of "Breaking Bad" for this, but it sounds like too much nerdy, geeky fun to miss. And suddenly I'm very glad my hubby talked me into putting a cable outlet here in my office. :D I can see the TV just off to my right as I type here on my main computer.
I think Yoda will have to swing his head around a little bit to chat and watch, though, won't ya? Or will you have Lady C shout out stuff to you from across the room? (Ha ha.)

Or an elaborate system of mirrors and pulleys.
I can see my television perfectly from my computer. Game on!
