Cats, dogs, or neither? Why?

I vote Dogs, because they are Man's best friend.

I assume you mean ancient Egyptian society, right?

I'm just going to assume you mean ancient Egyptian society.

I depends on what you mean, I suppose. When you say "value," I take it to mean pragmatic use, rather than just domestic comfort. And in that case, I'd go with dogs, which aid firefighters, policemen, blind people, etc. I don't think cats have much practical use.

If we're just talking about their value as pets, however, I wouldn't give either a big edge. Dogs seem to generally have a personality more approximating that of humans, but they're usually a lot messier, too. So I'd call it a wash in terms of value-as-pet.

only real "practical" use I can think of offhand is the farm cats that keep the rodent populations down around the feed...

Cats are good for drying ones hands on if you are minus a towel. Sure dogs could be too, but cats are cleaner and the look they give you is much more funny when you get them wet.

Seriously: I like both

I like cats, because my cat is forcing me to say this or he says he will claw my eyes while I sleep. Luckily, he isn't tall enough to seee what I am typing so...

Emotional investment is equal for both, but I think people tend to "Value" dogs more. Dogs are dependant upon their owners. Whereas cats are more independant. But hey, I guess in China they eat both, so go figure.

Society... probably dogs....

Me... both...

I once read that during the 1300's, because of superstitions, numerous villages in Europe killed off all the local cats and that those same villages were some of the hardest hit by the plague... not sure how true it is but it makes sense since rats carried the fleas that carried plague...

I'd say as a society neither, especially when you look at the sheer volume of both Cats and Dogs that are in animal shelters across th U.S. Pretty sad actually. Spay and Neuter your animals please!

I think society values dogs more, as they're more trainable and equally useful in rural and urban areas.

Personally though, I'm a cat person.

In society I would say the dog. Dogs are a multi-task domestic animals. Whereas cats are good for vermin control and companionship , Dogs are also good for those plus herding, protection, hauling, sledding, meat, as disabled help ect...

And I happen to be a dog person myself.
