View Full Version : Favorite Artwork/Artist
I may have missed it, but I didn't see a thread where members could share some of their favorite works of art. I thought I'd start one and begin with probably my favorite artist, Vincent van Gogh. I didn't really develop a strong affinity for his art until after I was fortunate enough to see a traveling exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It was then that my mind was blown.
Here are two of my fave van Goghs. I did see the second one live.

Your right, Caity. I see it now. The thread is called Art Gallery. You can move it over there, and I'll reword my first paragraph.
You stole my choice. :) It has, and probably always will be, Van Gogh. When I was a little kid I was messing around with water colors and just decided to randomly paint a night sky on a cheap piece of cardboard. I showed it to my mom, who informed me that it looked a lot like "Starry Night." Of course, my swirly motions were more the result of simply being a kid than anything skillful, but they did look alike, and "Starry Night" has been my favorite painting ever since. Heck, it's even the wallpaper on my cell phone.

I thought we had another thread or two on art... but am just going to post the links here because I really see no reason we can't start another one.... :)
This thread was to post favorite art work in….
Art Gallery (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=3720&highlight=Art+Gallery)
And this thread was to post MoFo members art… and believe me, we have had and still have some talent on this board….

Of course, I also love Ansel Adams' photography.

I have a tonne of favorite artists. However, i have one in particular I think you'll all thank me for introducing if you don't already know her. She is a photographer and a director and has won numerous awards for her work. She has a very dark and surreal feeling to her work and you have to check her out. Her name is Floria Sigismondi. Please check out her work, you will be blown away by her style.

Some really great choices guys… As I stated in one of the other threads, one of my favorites is Salvador Dali… I used to have a print of his painting, The Temptation of St. Anthony hanging in my living room…

I've never really formed opinions on pieces of fine art. Even though I've never found any art style with personal significance or weight or that makes me want to gaze at it for a long period of time, there are some times when I come across art that wish I could draw like (always illustration). The example I think about the most is Machi Abe's drawings for her husband's novel, Woman in the Dunes.
i am a huge fan of jasmine griffin beckett. in fact i am thinking of getting a tattoo of her work

then i have a love of the classic artists like monet and cassett which i have seen first hand

in fact in my kitchen, the backsplash is all my fave artists' prints i found at walamart for a dollar and then i found a dollar frame for them. i have 13 so i can change them up a bit when i get tired of the line-up!!!

I've seen this at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. and I even have a picture of me standing next to it, which I would have posted if I was on the computer that has the picture. It's very striking... makes me think of The Rocky Horror Picture Show... it's like Magenta meets Frank N Furter.

I'm only beginning to appreciate some of the classics, I do love a lot of the more darker and mystical in nature type of art. I'm a huge fan of Royo and the like. I love Monster's and Hot Chicks (sorry about the Hot Chick's thing, I'm a pig, I admit it.:p)especially if they are together. Royo has a lot of them together so that would be why he's one of my favorites. He has a lot of stuff that's pretty blue so I'll just put up some of his stuff that's a little more PG-13. :) H.R. Giger is also great, I've got a lot of his stuff on my desktop but it probably wouldn't be appropriate here.
These first 4 are all Royo...

Please fell free to edit these if they are to blue, I tried to go with a few that didn't have to much nudity. But that's what I like so I just wanted to put up a couple of examples. If it's not to blue let me know I've got some great stuff and would be happy to post more. I just don't want to be accused of turning this into a porn thread. :p

You've gotta love Rousseau and his big cats.
I haven't posted anything of Leonardo's becuse the guy is just so famous for the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and all his diagrams of the human body and flying. I truly believe he was a metagenius, plus he wrote all his notes backwards (as if he was looking in a mirror). OK, well, even so, I've found some lesser-known Leonardos which deserve some love, I believe.

My husband loves Rockwell too, Em, since it reminds him of a 'gentler time'.
to me, rockwell paints at a time when the world did not have the internet or any technology. to him, the world was easier not as complicated with today. it had its problems, but not like today. this is also my faves...

Heck, it's even the wallpaper on my cell phone.
http://photos.oes.org/albums/userpics/10002/normal_Starry_Night-Vincent_VanGogh%281152x864%29.jpg
******* that's exactly mine! Truthfully I don't know too much about art (I am taking a humanities class so I do know more about it that the normal person but still, the more you know the more you know you don't know :p) So this isn't exactly an original choice but this work has always stuck with me... and I've seen the real thing.
If I was to pick a different one I'd have to go with either Albrecht Durer or Pieter Bruegel the Eldar, for the purpose of being original I'll go with Pieter Bruegel, specifically "Hunters in the Snow"

i don't know much about art, but after reading Girl with a Pearl Earring a few months ago, i fell in love with the work of Johannes Vermeer. his paintings are exquisite. most of them are within the same setting, reusing a lot of the same props, and even the same characters, but i find them totally mesmerizing.
i find his work so original. his use of lighting is amazing. i could literally look at some of these all day. i'll share some of my favorites here.
[oh, due to the French-Dutch war in 1672, the exact date on his work is not known. Vermeer later went bankrupt and died leaving his wife and kids with oodles of debt, so his wife was forced to auction off most of his work. so i'm copying/pasting the guesstimated dates from Wikipedia.]

Greg Ryman is also just fantastic if you like beasties and babes... I just wish he'd do more in color.

LOL thats great man i didn't even think that giger would be inappropriate i thought it was art so i am sorry if i offended anyone i just my favorite!

The colors are great, aren't they? I've come to love maritime paintings - I think I first noticed them when my dad would come home with one of his many Patrick O'Brian novels from the library.
I just discovered another favorite last week at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, Edwin Hayes's Emigrant Ship:

Acclaimed wilderness photographer Peter Dombrovskis, (1945 - 1996).
http://www.anbg.gov.au/biography/biog-pics/dombrovskis-peter.jpg
He showed the world the beauty of Tasmania with vividly striking photographs whish showed his true love for the pristine wilderness which is our island state. In 2003 he was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum - the first Australian to be accorded this honour.
http://www.sauer-thompson.com/junkforcode/archives/Dombrovski1.jpg
Here is his most famous photo Rock Island Bend
This iconic image was centre in the campaign to stop Tasmania's Hydro-Electric Commission damming the Franklin River. It appeared as a full-page advertisement in the Herald just before the 1983 federal election, the caption was "Would you vote for a party that would destroy this?" We won and the Franklin remains flowing free.

On a personal note ... Peter lived in my community and died in 1996 while photographing in the Western Arthur Range in southwest Tasmaniain doing what he did best. Liz, his widow still lives up here and we see each other often at the pub. My neighbour Chris Bell, was his protege and was on the search party that found his body. The last photo he took was of a gnarled weathered root wrapping around a lichined rock which spelled 'Liz'. :yup: :bawling:

What your stance in the debate as to whether or not Photography is art?
My stance is that it is. That's why I post Ansel Adams in here. It requires imagination, composition, light and dark, creativity, context, and it's done usually by one person. The photographer is usually the developer. Even when I don't develop my own photos, I dearly want to lay claim to their artistic merits, and if people agree with me, then I hope it's art.
I know people who claim that film, theatre and even music from bands aren't actually art because they involve multiple "artists", and art is somehow supposed to be a singular expression. I don't buy it, but what do you think, Pimpy?

What your stance in the debate as to whether or not Photography is art?
I think photography is art. There is a method to it, the lighting, the pose, and the arrangement. Even when you try to take a random photo, there's an intent there to try and capture something. Art.

Wanna know a cool trick? If you do, proceed to point A. If you do not, proceed directly to point B.
Point A:
When you're shooting a low light event (normally with lots of movement), like a concert or something, make your aperture hole smaller, turn the exposure time up, and turn your fill flash on. When you take your picture the flash will expose a still image on the "canvas" and the longer exposure time will allow you to move your camera around which will cause any forms of light to make swirls that will come out on top of the still image you made from the flash, and other cool stuff.
People usually point and pan/tilt the camera in the direction of the colored lights after the flash goes off. It makes for nifty color swirls.
Here's an example. It's not done very well, but you get the idea. I didn't take it.

Thanks guys. I have a much larger body of art work but I just bought my laptop and havn't had time to put it on my computer yet.
As for my pictures being small. They're thumbnails, click them and they get bigger.
I post this stuff in the MoFo Fine Art thread, HERE (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=271287#post271287).
Also, MP started a thread with art done by MoFo's HERE (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=9230&highlight=MoFo+Art).
Mark, I think you and I have chatted about Van Gogh in the past, maybe over at MJ...

J.D. Hillberry Trompe L' Oeil artwork in pencil and charcoal.
http://www.jdhillberry.com/images/which-came-first.jpg (http://www.jdhillberry.com/which_came_first_closeup.htm)
.
“Which Came First”
This entire image was drawn, including the tape, paper, and background mat board. It's 16 x 12 and rendered with charcoal , carbon, and graphite pencils. Charcoal for the mat background, and carbon and graphite for the other elements. The drawing is an illustration of the conundrum about the chicken and the egg, but I have included and additional visual paradox that adds to t he riddle. At the bottom of the picture, the pencil breaks the plane of the paper, making it appear to be taped to the drawing. However, the top of the pencil includes a cast shadow that follows the plane of the wooden ledge. This gives the impression that the pencil is taped to the wood in the image..

I just found one amazing site of pictures. Near the bottom of this page, there are numbered links to 48 pages, 8 pictures per page.
The site! Chesley Bonestell (1888-1986)
The ‘Father’ of Modern Space Art. Born in San Francisco, he started as an architectural designer. He designed the façade of the Chrysler Building in New York including it’s famous gargoyles. He contributed to the design of the Golden Gate Bridge. His first illustration of the planet Saturn was lost in the earthquake of 1906! He has inspired thousands of scientists, astronomers, astronauts and artists. He worked as a special effects matte painter on numerous films including Citizen Kane, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, War of the Worlds and Destination Moon.
