Right, so this past Monday, I read this (http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007708060310) in the newspaper, focusing primarily on this section:
As part of the festival, there will be a short horror film contest. To participate, visit the festival Web site (see address below) for entry forms and details. Clues and required subject matter will be announced on the Web site at noon Thursday.
The horror film submissions may be serious, comic, animated or in a documentary style. Entries must be at least six minutes and no longer than 10. Teams are limited to five people. The entry fee is $25. Forms and fees may be e-mailed, sent or dropped off at 4621 Outer Loop, No. 310, Louisville, KY 40219. All films must be completed by 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
My first thought was, "hey, that would be pretty cool to do." I didn't think that by the end of this week, I will actually have made a film. But alas, my friends and I have been slaving since last Monday over scouting/securing a location, rounding up costumes and equipment, planning shoot times, and commissioning extras... not to mention pushing through a rigorous three-day shoot this past weekend (each shoot lasting till the wee hours of the morning). Now we're in the process of scoring and fine editing, with final shot/sound editing to come hopefully before the Thursday deadline.
In just under seven minutes, the film follows a lowly janitor's late shift at a local community daycare center. This janitor (me!) is used to hearing strange noises echo down the halls of the creepy 60-year old building, but on this night he will have to muster the courage to face malevolent forces hellbent on driving him mad.
Suffice it to say, this film will not be award-worthy, and has definitely been a learning experience in the way of piecing together a film and coordinating on all aspects of its construction. But no matter how much it sucks in the end, I'm rather proud that we've done it, and I can't imagine this will be the last film my friends and I ever shoot.
Just thought I'd share. :)
Oh, and here's a mock movie poster I threw together, just for fun:
