Latest Changes to Rep System

Hi MoFos,

Well, it might be a bit anticlimactic, but after a lot of thought I've decided to remove anonymity from the rep system. This will, of course, not be retroactive, as it wouldn't be fair to suddenly reveal someone who was told their rating would remain private. From here on out, though, usernames will show up on the right, adjacent to the date, on your Reputation Tracker (http://movieforums.com/community/rep.php).

This is an admittedly small change, but I think it fixes the primary complaint many had with the system. However, in pondering the problem, I came up with a couple of intriguing ideas, one of which I'll be running some tests on over the next couple of weeks to test its feasability. I will, of course, keep you all posted.

Also making a return are the rep dots...and yes, the lightsabers. It works like this:

50 points = 1 green dot
Over 100 points = 1 bright green dot for each 50 points
Over 500 points = a green bar (often referred to as a "lightsaber")
Everyone starts with one green dot even if they have less than 50 points.
One RED dot for every -25 points, since negative rep is considerably rarer than positive rep.Now, these specifics are certainly subject to change over the next week or so, though I imagine any changes would be fairly minor. If anyone has any suggestions as to how many points should represent a dot, or how many should be required for a lightsaber, Yoda is all ears. Pun intended.

Ahhhh lightsabers! Did anyone else have lightsaber fights with discarded kitchen strip lights when they were kids? They made a great bang when they shattered... :D

Great work! While not many in my "phlegm thread" (heh) seemed to care about people repping instead of posting, it did become clear that anonymous rep was mostly just irritating people. This small change should go a long way toward isolating the source of negativity, and then people can decide how much weight they want to assign to that person's opinion. Thanks, Yods!

While you are right about anonymous, commentless rep for innocuous posts being annoying, I still believe that sometimes repping is better than posting. I find it annoying when people post only to say 'great post' or ':nope:' or similar when they could just use rep to say that and leave the thread free for actual discussion on the film/whatever else is being discussed.

When i first read this, thought it meant for every 1 neg rep you lost 25 positive in your overall tally. Worked out that would be silly.

Anyway, any chances ye who wield a sabre would be able to have they're reps worth two points or something? Did like the idea that people who are higher rated can give higher rating, just on a lower scale than before.

Well, I finally figured out the thumb display problem that a few people had reported. While the system has always registered your rep, and has checks in place to make sure no one can rep more than once, the thumbs should now reliably disappear, and stay disappeared when you return to the posts you've repped before.

Nope, not just you. It's another small glitch I noticed last week. Probably one of those problems I caused while fixing one of the other problems. :) I'll see what I can do about it.
