View Full Version : New Posts: not so much with the working...

Hey, maybe I have a setting wrong, but the New Posts thing just doesn't always work, whether I'm at home or at work. When I sign in, it will say there are x number of new posts, but when I click "New Posts", I get fewer (sometimes by a lot).
I also just tried a work-around using the search function and setting it to posts from yesterday or newer, and that returned zip.
Occasionally, if there really has been no activity since I left, I get the option to click a link and see all posts from the last 24h, and that does seem to work. Can that be available all the time, maybe?
I might be misunderstanding, so if any of my answers seem off, just say so and all that:
When clicking "New Posts," you're actually shown all threads with new posts in them, so the discrepancy between the X Number of New Posts and the number of threads that show up when you click New Posts might be explained by there simply being several new posts in some of the threads, as opposed to just one.
The New Posts system has always been a little sketchy by its very nature. It tries to mark things as read when you view them, but also marks everything as read if you visit and then leave for awhile. This means that there are numerous ways in which it can work as intended, and still be kind of confusing/inconsistent.
Anyway, here's the 24 hour link:

As soon as I'm done posting here, I'll go ahead and add it to the "Quick Links" menu. :) Hope ya'll find that helpful.

I figured that too, til that dark day when it said there were 12 or so new posts and "New Posts" showed me nothing.
Thanks for the link, Yods. :)
Hm. Had you viewed any of the threads at that point? The X number of posts thing is an add-on of my own, and doesn't follow all the same rules as the New Posts link. I don't yet have a comprehensive view of all the differences, except that I believe New Posts will often exclude threads/posts it has logged you as having viewed/read.

I hadn't yet. It has happened that I sign in, see the count of new posts since my last visit, and immediately click New Posts and it shows none. I've also noticed if I go to PMs before going back to the forum index, that I get no new posts, even if there were some when I initially signed in. I can work around that by answering PMs after reading the forum, but if they're not showing up in the initial query results, then it would be good to have some alternative way of finding them. The "this just in" side panel helps with this, btw, but the link you provided above works better.
My feeling (no way for me to be sure if this is the case) is that your count is correct, but the system isn't returning all the new posts that it should. This is based on my having gotten "no new posts" but then I will have new rep and when I click on that, there are new responses in the thread.

hmmm... also, I just tested your "Todays Posts" in the Quick Links menu and it's the same report as "New Posts", but the link you put in this thread seems to be returning all posts from the last 24h.

Where is the 24hr thingy on the home page :goof:
