Here is another short I did for film class.
Two characters had to meet.
They both say something
Exchange something
One leaves
They say departing lines.
The departing dialogue is an inside joke between people in my class, but gamers will get it.

The Awkward Conversation.
For people who were at the Oscar chat and for some reason paid attention to what I was saying might remember I mentioned this.
It's another school project in which my script was voted in the top two to be filmed. Which meant I was also the director.
It's about a father who must have that talk that every father must have with their son at some point in their life.
Bloopers to come as well.

LOL ... nice one Matey. Good camera work and fun scripting ... also good choice in music :)
Are you still studying or have you completed the course?
Do you have plans to enter the industry or perhaps enter a short film competition?
I recently (last year) assisted a mate in his final assessment project ... lots of fun, as most (2 out of 3 sessions) was shot in the pub. I did special effects and also ended up acting (if you can call it acting :p LOL) ... he passed the course ...

Anyways.
This is my monologue for the final project, shot in 6 hours. I'll be doing a commentary for it, and will throw it up here if anyone is interested. I'm not too happy with the final product. If I could I would go back and change tons of stuff.
The V/O might be low, so adjust if needed.

Here is a quick one.
We had to do a PSA that dealt with Toronto and city garbage. It couldn't be longer then 30 seconds, which meant it sucked.
Here is the longer version.
My buddy directed it, I wrote and edited it. This one was basically thrown together just to show some friends online. Hence no real credits or music.

The son... are Canadians really that much into way-behind-the-curve, "indie" American kids with the knee ripped out of the jeans and the backwards baseball cap (what I call the brain drain)? So with the second year ending and screenings WEDNESDAY, I'm having trouble finishing this pitch package.
We all wrote a script this year and voted on the best ones for each class, there are 4 sections. Mine was voted #2 in our class (behind a kid who wants to film his in Detroit). Currently 39 went through and they are being whittled down to about 14. This is the big project next year and if my script gets chosen I get to direct it.
We all need to write and submit a pitch package, including the script, budget sheet, viability, soundscape, visual style, etc.
So, my script...
Here's a quick premise.
A modern day Frankenstein love story with a Dr. Seuss twist in which a young girl, Michelle, falls in love with the boy across the street, Stan. When Stan rejects her, her twisted little mind decides that if she can’t have him, no one will, and kills him. She decides to bring him back to life, to show him that no one but her will love a member of the undead.
and the current tagline is: Michelle is about to "make" a new friend.
Here is the character sketch I drew for the character of Michelle.

Not the best, or really accurate, but a sense of what I'm going for.
People are telling me it's very Tim Burton, I can see that, yet I'm trying to make it stand on it's own as well.
TheUsualSuspect
06-15-09, 09:54 PM
Well today was the day and the pitch was not chosen. Instead they have decided to go the route of immature and cliched. A script about a woman deciding if she should stay in a relationship because of religion was chosen (horribly structured and boring) and another one in which a man loses his wedding ring inside a hooker after fingering her. Funny, but forgettable and a lot of jokes are in bad taste.
14 were chosen and I'm upset mine wasn't. I got a dozen emails from other students were were shocked mine wasn't chosen either. I'm not trying to make it a huge tragedy or a big deal that mine was 'suppose' to be chosen or anything. It apparently just wasn't chosen, I can move on.
What I'm really upset with are my electives. We were told to order our preferences from 1 to 9. They told us that they will do their best to give everyone what they want and people will most likely get 2 of their top 3.
These were my choices
1. Script Writing
2. Editing
3. Directing
4. Sound Production
5. Cinematography
6. TV Production
7. Art Direction
8. Production Management
9. Visual Effects
I got Script Writing, TV Production and Product Management. 2/3? Where the hell is that. I talked to others and 3 out of 5 of them told me they got ALL 3 of their top choices. How does that work? I don't know.
The way the next semester works is you work on a position that your are in for your electives. Since the scripts are already written and TV has no purpose in the IP part, I'm left with Production Management. This is all paper work and **** (sorry for my language) I do not want to do. I'm going to school to learn how to make films not write down log hours. and filling out daily production reports.
Not only do I not want to do this, I'm not even good at it. Production Management is one of my lowest marks. I don't have the needed skills to be a producer or production manager. I loved the feeling of working on a set, I won't get this again next semester if things stay the way they are (which by the looks of it, will).
Now let's look at it from my perspective. I was planning on moving out to Toronto this school year because of the projects. Too much work, long hours and hard labour for me to take a 2 hour commute every day. So the plan was indeed to move out. I'm having doubts now.
Why should I continue this course if I'm not doing what I want to do. It is a waste of time and money (both housing and tuition). A co-op in the last semester would be useless if I have to take yet another Production Management position. This is not why I got into film.
I may seem like I'm complaining a lot and should just suck it up, but how everything is connected and works, you can be royally screwed on a lot of things. This is one of those things, In My Opinion.
Just some thoughts that I needed to vent.

Where there's a will there's a way.
But I'd also be pretty choked if I was paying all this money and stuck in Production Management too. Good luck regardless.
How much, if any of this, is already paid for? I have more to say but that's a priority before I get to the rest. You may be aware that my daughter Sarah is going to USC's School of Cinematic Arts. Well, that is a dream come true for her, but we've just been told, TODAY, that we're supposed to go find someplace else to live before she even starts college, and it's not cheap, I'll tell you. So my opinion is that if it's already paid for, you reinvent that section which you think sucks and make it your own and much more pertinent to your previous expectations. Even if it's not totally paid for but it's cheap, do the same thing. You've got to have made some friends there who will be on your side and trade off with you, unless they really aren't friends but are the kind of cutthroats I came across at UC Irvine when I tried to become a doctor. Good Luck.

So I've decided to stick it out and try to make the best of it. I might have made matters worse though, since I'm stuck in the Production Management class, I've stepped up and tackled the role of PRODUCER.
Granted, Director would be so much more fun and creative. Producer seems like a lot of hassle, yet I'd rather get my name on something then have it be a random one no one sees.
I'm guess the saying that Jews run Hollywood might be true. In an ironic twist, the one script that was forwarded (against the writer's request, and only forwarded in my opinion because the teacher was Jewish and the script was about a Jewish girl) is the one I'm producing.
Thoughts of sabotage came into my mind. How in the hell can I try to steer this thing into something that people might enjoy? It's a challenge, but when it comes down it to, I'm not the director.
Being a producer is going to be one hell of a job and will most likely take up a lot of my time.
I'll try to keep those interested posted when 2nd semester role around.

So this is the link to our film that we did for the Toronto 48 Hour film challenge.
I came up with the premise and co-wrote it with two other writers. Suffice to say, one of them was deemed the "Head Writer" and took more creative control over it. We each wrote a script based on the idea and he took them all and meshed them together. The final script was two lines of dialogue from mine and one montage segment (which he changed to his own jokes) and one bit involving a door opening with the other. The rest of it was all his. The final film, however, cut the door joke out and we dropped one character.
We slept the Friday night after we got the call from our teammates as to what our package entailed. We had to make a film based on these things.
Location: Convenience Store
Line: Just Write Something
Prop: Marking Tape
Theme: First Time
The film could not exceed 8 minutes long.
We got to work early the next morning, non-stop. I worked as Boom Operator - which fell under my Production Assistant duties as well as assistant editor. We finished filming around eleven pm and myself and a two others got to syncing the footage. Synching the footage means taking the audio which is recorded through a mic and into a device and match/synch that up with the video. This is one of the many reasons why they have slates. The clapping sound is what they match the video/audio to.
Anyways, 4 hours of doing that and I was dead tired. Yet, we ran into a problem. We were all syncing on separate computers and we couldn't get them all the go on one computer because there was some glitch with the audio. 2 hours of trouble shooting and we got it fixed. I decided to go get some ZZZ's as the guy did the edit. I woke up and we had our edit done.
Then it went on to both visual effects and sound editing. This was around 11:00 AM. The rest of the day was dedicated to these two aspects and with and hour or so of polishing it up. The deadline was 8:00 PM. We submitted the film at 7:45 PM.
There are some audio glitches, so we want to to another mix before we let more people see it. But, we have it up on Megavideo for those who are interested. I thought I'd share it with you guys. Let me know what you think. Keep in mind, we could only have ten people on our team and none of us are actors, so be gentle.
The theatre showing of the films was Wednesday at Bloor cinema (no one from toronto here, eh?) and it was a really long night. Started at 7:00 I got out around midnight. There were 30 films to get through and they were all nearly 8 minutes. Years prior most were 5. There was one 15 minute intermission and I must say the first half of the films were far superior to the second. They announced a top ten that would go on to win prizes and such.
We unfortunately did not make the top ten. Some of the ones who did made it boggle my mind, others were well deserved. My favourite of the night were actually our friends. We all went to film school together and we had separate teams. They got in, we didn't. If you look up torontofilmchallenge on youtube and click on the 2010 videos, you'll see the ones that I think made it. Stick It To The Man, Man! was my favourite (our friends) and another one I really enjoyed was called Bus Stop.
Well, here is our entry.

Hmmm... wow, great job!
First of all the editing and camera work (doubles sequences were spot on) was really fluid and top notch. Effects were quite good and subdued to just the right amount. I didn't notice any audio glitches though, but I'm not very perceptive.
I feel like maybe the ending wasn't as much of a "clincher" as it could've been. Then again it was definitely charming in its own way. I thought the main actress and the guy were pretty decent; the guys reactions were funny because they were mechanistic, I think. The girls mistakes just had a wtf factor that really worked well, I feel.
I'm really impressed overall, Suspect. Keep up the good work!

Sally must have a time machine because her instant camera didn't exist in 1963. They had instant cameras, but the technologogy was more primitive. The picture came out between heavy paper and you had to wait sixty seconds before you pulled the paper off.
TheUsualSuspect
01-08-11, 01:59 PM
Yes, that was one of the comments from the judges. My research (very minimum) saw that instant cameras were around in the 60's, so I went with that.
Also, they were pretty heavy, so she must have great strength ;)

It was good, but I wondered why Oswald paid thirty five bucks for salami. No wonder he was pissed at Kennedy.
I don't know exactly what those cameras were like in the early sixties, but the ones circa 1970 were pretty big and clunky, but I think they came with a strap you could hang on your neck. My father had one. I think the early sixties ones were much more expensive than the later model. They were fun, but a pain in the neck too because somtimes the paper didn't come off right and if you didn't time it right the pictures would be ruined. I wasted a lot of pictures that came out all black.

Well I've got more news for those of you who want to know a thing or two about my current 'career' in film.
I entered into a screenplay competition. The Canadian Short Screenplay Competition, which had over 500 scripts from over 30 different countries entered. That was whittled down to 57, then to 25, then a top 13.
Yours truly, made the top 13 scripts and have been invited to attend the Award Gala on May 28th. First place wins $2,500, an apple iPad, the award itself and the possibility of their film being made. Second gets $500, then so on.
The problem is that I live in Hamilton, Ontario....which is near Toronto for those who don't know. The Awards Gala, which is also apart of a Film Festival is in Yorkton. Yorkton is in Saskatchewan, two provinces over.

Got a project on the go, possibly.
I wrote a short horror script about a little girl who wants revenge on two teenage boys for stealing her Halloween candy. So a buddy of mine just got a new camera and wants to shoot something.
I'm trying to get this together quickly too. Need some shots done on Halloween, the rest of the film can be shot the weekend after. I'll use this as a production journal of shorts to keep those posted who are interested. Since I'm unemployed now, it gives me more time to dive head first into such a project.

Things are coming along.
We are getting b-roll on Halloween and the planned shooting dates are November 12, 13th. We plan on having it released next October, which gives us plenty of POST-PRODUCTION time to fine tune what we need.
It's the pre-production that is going to be a killer for us.
The crew is shaping up well, I'm producing, director, writing, editing and post supervising.
We got a camera operator, D.O.P, VFX supervisor, Assist Director, Production Assists, Stills Photographer, Poster Designer.
We are still looking for our sound recordist and make-up.
Cross fingers we get things going smoothly.
For those wanting to read the script, I posted it a couple posts above. Trick or Treat is the title.

Sad news, at least for me.
I've decided to cancel the project due to lack of interested crew members. I don't want to shoot something when people are not responding, crew positions are not filled and plans that keep falling through due to people who flake out at the last minute.
Hopefully I can pick things up next year.
Thus is the world of film.
So Suspect, I also think that sucks. What did you have as a budget, at least for the shooting?

I was putting in $500 of my own money. I had an additional $250 from the DOP.
The cash wasn't the MAIN issue, it was lack of people and interest. I needed the DOP to get some shots on Halloween night, she lets me know Frida that she can't do it. I didn't have access to a camera either.
So instead of rushing it, I'll hopefully have it for next year.

Am wondering if there are any takers on a 90 some odd page "horror" script I wrote. Looking to get some feedback and anyone with about an hour or two (depending on how fast you read) of free time wanna take a look at it?
PM me and I can email a copy over.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Got a short script going into production. The Producer loved it, wanted to change some aspects, which was fine with me. The final product is good me thinks.
On top of that, they want to expand the story into a feature and get (hopefully) Stephen McHattie to play the lead. So now I have the task of trying to expand a 7 page short into a 90 page feature. Excited, scared, all of it. The main issue is coming up with a story that can serve 90 minutes.

A poster for a script I wrote, the director did some re-writes so he threw his name on writing credits too. I'm interested in seeing how it turns out.

On the first page I put a link to FunyorDie for a video I did in class called "The AWkward Conversation". I posted that in 2008.
So link to original:

They stole and remade your movie with no permission? Did you leave a post calling them out? Plagiarism is rampant around here!

You got ripped, but I thought the one with the black guy and the white son was funnier because the father there was a better actor.

Well, the big difference is they are actors, the people in mine aren't. I tried contacting the uploader, to no avail. The production quality is terrible in my opinion, specifically the sound. I don't want my name attached to it.

I don't remember where I saw it, but there is some version from years ago, where the little kid ends up explaining it to the father from what he learned in sex education.

The Bench (http://vimeo.com/78234590)
So there's a link to the completed film.
I gotta say, while I like how they shot it, they completely changed the script. The story is the same: God and the Devil sitting on a bench discussing the fate of humanity. But all the dialogue is different, they changed the devil to a woman and they made it preachy, whereas my original story had a slight twist with The Devil being the one who created everyone and spawned a God for them to "praise".
While I don't hate their story, it just feels weird to see it done so completely differently. Which is why I guess he decided to put his name down as a co-writer. I would have been more satisfied if it said "story by" instead.
At least they kinda kept the ending the same. ;)
It's still cool (in my mind) that someone saw my script online and now there is a short film out there.
EDIT - They obviously changed the title too, the POSTERS for the film are a few posts up ^^^
