Any Peckinpah is better than most action movies, but saying that, It's no Wild Bunch. It's about two CIA oppretives that are basicially high priced assassins or what I would like to think as new age samurai's. One decides to work for the highest bidder but in chosing so he has to put the other out of commission. Now starts the revenge part of the plot. While Cann recoupes and pretty much thinks only about getting Duvall back, Duvall sits back gets fat and makes the big bucks.
I get the feeling that Peckinpah was let lose like it was a trouble project to being with and they just let him have it. The editing ,
the sound , the chorography between action scenes and the relationship between Caan and Duvall are all incredible. Peckinpah got so much out of practically nothing. He began the film with no real script but turned it into something that really worked. I feel for Caan who's been betrayed by his best friend and been let down by his own trust. And plus ,the relationship between the two of them is strong and works well even though it's short lived , it's perfect.
You start to realize how Peckinpah works out situation and complexities between characters. Putting them in tough predicuments and then letting them work there way out for the
remainder of the film.
Director Monte Hellman edited one of the most complex action scenes in the film. It's two scenes made into one. One calm, clear and talkative the other part violent, uncertain and unrelenting. It's pure Peckinpah all the way with ballet movements which give a graceful uncanny feeling that Peckinpah could only do. Slow motion multicamera montage and strong lead roles. It's a big 10/10 for me but I think most will be quite hard on it and find it only to be okay.
Philip Lathrop was the cinematographer. Editing was done by Garth Cravan who also edited Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Bring me the head of Alfrado Garcia and Convoy.
