View Full Version : Update Thread Subscriptions from Forum
Hey MoFos,
Another change to report. This one was actually implemented oh, maybe a week ago, but it's relatively minor so I didn't bother to announce it until now. As you may have noticed, on each forum, where the threads are listed you'll see a small envelope icon (http://movieforums.com/community/images/misc/subscribed.gif) to the far right of any thread you're subscribed to. No big deal.
Anyway, you can now click on that to bring up an in-page menu (similar to the menu that comes up when you click on a person's username on their posts, or when you click on the "Favorite Movies" link) that allows you to delete or modify your subscription to that thread. It'll update your subscription right then and there, without reloading the page.
Ahh, the wonders of AJAX. :)
Expect more changes of this nature over time, as menus of this sort help to reduce clutter.

Cool.... thanks Yoda.... :)
Just curious, why not instead of having people automatically subscribed to a thread as soon as they make a single comment...why not give an option to those who want to decide whether they prefer to subscribe to the thread or not?
Ya know, instead of having like hundreds of subscribed threads when you can just have your own personalized list.
There is, indeed, such an option: there's a checkbox on the Post Reply page that subscribes you to a thread, as well as a setting on the Edit Options (http://www.movieforums.com/community/profile.php?do=editoptions) page that controls whether or not that happens by default.
There's also a Subscribed Threads (http://www.movieforums.com/community/subscription.php?do=viewsubscription) page (found on the left in the User CP) that lets you manage your subscriptions; deleting them, organizing them into folders, changing which ones result in email, etc.
Yes. When I came to MoFo, I chose not to have subscribed threads by default, and I've still never subscribed to a thread (except one by accident somehow) in eight years.

Ahh, the wonders of AJAX. :) Yeah, it's pretty cool, but I read it's pretty vulnerable. I hope you have your security intact.

I just subscribe now to 41 threads instead of 563 lol...The only ones I do subscribe to are the ones about not released movies and a few of my own threads I created just in case,

Yeah, we should be good. This thread is eight years old, so we've been using it awhile. And I think most of the vulnerability is the kind of thing that only increases the risks if you're not already guarding properly against injection attacks and the like. If you're concerned, and you happen to remember the specific vulnerability you read about, feel free to PM it my way and I'll be glad to delve into it. :)

Wow, I didn't even notice this thread is so old. I can't remember any specific vulnerabilities, but I'm pretty sure you're well guarded against SQL Injection, XSS and other 'lame' ways to hack sites. I just happen to have classes on database security this year, so I kinda got into it, but only the basics, of course. I'm also working on a project on elliptic curve cryptography, but I've only got the theoretical side done.
Cool stuff. Yeah, thankfully PHP has a function for sanitizing input for queries; just gotta remember to use it, and that covers all the low-hanging stuff.
