View Full Version : Favorite Movies Option

Well, as some of you have surely noticed already, there is now a "Favorite Movies" link on every post. When clicked, it will produce a dropdown list of that user's favorite movies -- provided they've chosen to list them. Everyone can do so (up to 10 total) here:

http://www.movieforums.com/community/favorites.php

In addition to appearing on every post, each user's list of favorite movies will appear on their profile, as well. You can return to the page above to edit your movies at any time, and the changes will be reflected on your profile and all of your posts instantaneously.

Longtime MoFos will remember a similar feature years ago that worked for awhile, then got a little buggy, and eventually disappeared. This is essentially the same idea. Hope you dig it.

In fact, I'm going to have to insist that you dig it; the spot normally reserved for one of the site's random slogans on the forum home page (just above the "X number of posts since your last visit" line) will display a reminder to choose your favorites for every user who hasn't yet done so. That's right: I've created a program which will nag you into liking this feature.

This should help new members further introduce themselves, and allow MoFos -- new or otherwise -- to get a sense of each other's tastes, so as to more effectively mock their opinions.

Enjoy!

For some reason I can't get this option to work. What is happening is whenever I type in all ten of my movies and hit the done button all the movies disappear.

We've been having a few issues, as we recently upgraded our forum software. We've started a thread to report and discuss them here:

Forum software upgraded (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=12901)

Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm doing my best to track the problem down, though it's a bit baffling so far, as I've been unable to reproduce it on my end.

UPDATE: now, all favorite movies (both on users' posts and on their profiles) are clickable, with each bringing up a search results page listing the other users who have that movie on their favorites list, along with the ranking they gave it, and the average ranking of those users.

Example: Goodfellas (http://www.movieforums.com/community/favoritesearch.php?title=Goodfellas).

Actually, yes it is. At first glance, I thought it was like the post links on a few other boards, where it takes you to sites about the movie, where to buy the movie, etc . . . This is neat. An easy way to see how opinions compare. I doubt anyone shares what will be on my top ten list, but that is beside the point. :)

Yeah, one weakness of the system is that it can't account for typos and the like. There's really no way around that...nor is there any easy way to break listings like "Bladerunner" up into "Blade Runner" to ensure the correct number of matches. However, I should be able to rewrite it the other way; to have "Blade Runner" yield results both with and without the spaces.

I'll probably be away from my desk most of the day, but I'll see what I can do about that.

But if the software doesn't account for spelling errors/typos then presumably it won't recognise translated titles of the same film, so you can't be sure someone hasn't put All About My Mother for example. Like no-one else has put Show Me Love which I have on my list, but they might have put it down as ****ing Amal.

Similarly (or perhaps 'conversely') you could have a title which refers to several different films or versions of the same film e.g. King Kong or All or Nothing (is your pick the Mike Leigh film or the hip-hop musical, adi?)

You make a good point, which is why I think everyone should put original titles of the films.

It's Mike Leigh naturally, one of my favorite directors.

Hmm, interesting, I wasn't trying to censor it, it just came out like that when I typed the word (the main reason I use the translated title), don't know how come you can type it and I can't! Yoda?

Small change: the "Favorite Movies" menu only appears on a user's post if they, in fact, have entered some. Dunno about the rest of your MoFos, but I found myself clicking the links all the time to see if so-and-so had entered any. But now we'll all know without having to click and check. :)

Also...

Yeah, one weakness of the system is that it can't account for typos and the like. I went ahead and did this. Searching for "Blade Runner" will now return all instances of "Blade Runner," as well as all instances of "Bladerunner." Any search term will search as expected, but also check for versions of the term without spaces, just in case.

I imagine this will lead to some erroneous results from time to time, but by and large it should make the searching more accurate.

Alright, MoFos: your freewheeling ways are coming to an end! From now on, the favorite movies page (http://www.movieforums.com/community/favorites.php) requires that all display order values be integers from 1-10. No more wishy-washy zeroes and slashes. ;) And no more weird infinity symbols...I'm talkin' to you, Pimp.

Also, slight improvement: now, when you erase a title, it won't just leave your entry blank, it'll actively delete it. You shouldn't notice any difference, because blank entries are ignored on your posts/profiles anyway, but I thought I'd mention it anyhow.

Is my using the first as a "Top Horror Movies" and the last as 9/10 is ok with you? That is the best I can do since I have a much better idea about the order of the Horror Films I enjoy than I do out of all my movies put together. That would be an impossible task.

Well, current values are grandfathered in; everything already entered will stay as-is. But you won't be able to update it without the new restrictions going into effect.

That said, I don't have a big problem with that kind of finagling; it throws a little bit of a wrench into searches and the like (which is one of the reasons why these changes are being implemented), and it will become more of an issue as the system and it searching capabilities are expanded, but it's not the end of the world.

Regarding your list being a "Top Horror Movies" list -- I've actually been thinking about allowing for the more ambitious members to fill out longer lists, or lists-by-genre, or possibly even lists-by-decade/year/whatever. Might be a bit of an undertaking, and I imagine only a handful of MoFos would bother to make use of it at first, but it's definitely a possibility.

Ok, that would be cool for me and easily solve my problem here.
I also think I could manage my own yearly or decade lists as well without any kind of a problem. Allot easier choosing 'the best of' when the movies I see in those areas have a shorter list to them.

I'm finally working on this. They will change with the seasons, though. Fall brings movies like Halloween, They Live, Plains, Trains and Automobiles . . . Winter brings The Thing, A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation . . .

*edit*

Spring is love, and mystery. Summer is all about action, and suspense. Of course, comedy is a must, no matter when. I'm probably the only one here that does this!?!

Well, Fall is closing in. I'm not sure if anyone else gets motivated on what to watch, simply because the seasons change. I do, so I changed my list. I have too many favorites, to keep the same top ten, all year round. I wish I could do a top twenty, for the next two seasons.

I like that idea a lot. Or maybe there could be the top ten list which stays constant and another "featured top ten list" that is constantly changing. So that way when it is a seasonal movie time of year, the list could reflect that, then at other times of the year it could be anything. More people might tend to get involved that way. I dunno just an idea.

On another note, I still haven't done my top ten. Guess I should get on that.

Am I totally data-dumping, or is this the only place to update our favorites list? I meant to list my favorite Christmas films, but I will find an old Christmas movie thread for that, instead. I'm watching too many new movies lately, and some of them are sticking with me. As in, I want to watch them again, but I don't have time. Truly favorites.

An idea I had about the favourites - since you can see who else has the same favourites, is it possible to write some code that takes every favourites list on the site and combines them to come up with a "Mofo Favourites List" and gives the top 10 films on average, as determined by every individual's list?

We're on exactly the same wavelength. :) Bobby and I have talked about incorporating the Favorite Movies option into the MoFo 100 poll he organized a little while back. There's a lot of detail that needs to be hammered out about how to weight such a thing, though.

I have, however, written up a quick script that displays the most-listed favorites, though there are two small issues with it: 1) people spell movies differently (or incorrectly) from time to time, so such a list wouldn't be perfect, and 2) movies like 300, believe it or not, would be among the most-listed, so it'd be necessary to exclude listings from people who, say, don't have a certain number of posts.

I'm still working out the specifics of how to deal with each. I've taken to manually updating people's movies to fix typos and bring them in line with others (IE: replacing "Shawshank Redemption" with "The Shawshank Redemption"). I'd rather not fiddle, but I think it's okay as long as I'm just formalizing things.

I'll see if I can tweak the Most Listed list adequately enough in the coming week to post it publicly.

Here is just an idea - could we maybe one day get an option like the favourite movies option where we could put the films we are planning to see soon or looking forward to or trying to find? There could even be some kind of stats on the most anticipated movie or something. I know there are threads for this out there, but I saw a couple of people with their anticipated movies as part of their signature and that gave me this idea.
