Ok, here is where you can post your ideas for DVDs that are well worth the money to get. Just post away, if you know the price of the disc/discs then put it next to it.
Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box - $49.99
Armageddon - Criterion - $39.99
Terminator 2 Special Edition - was $29.99 now you can find it for $19.99
Those are just a few...what are yours?
I'd have to say that the Jurassic Park (the first movie) DVD is a good one...if only for the "Making of..." feature. It's really a lot of fun...and quite detailed. An analysis of one of the most amazing and revolutionary movies ever created.

That's true, forgot about that.
Jurassic Park - $19.99
It's funny to watch them talking about for a little while claymation was how they were going to do the movie. They ended up just using the claymation for a model.
Yeah, that really amazed me? Stop/go animation with clay for the dinos? Ugh. I'm so glad that someone mentioned computer graphics. And, heck, that movie made CGI famous...now it's used for all kinds of things, most of them, I'd bet, aren't even noticable. That's a major contribution to the movie world.

"The Simpsons" first season DVD set retails for only $39.98, which isn't that bad, really.
Of course any and all DVDs can usually be found cheaper on-line than in most brick-and-mortar stores. They routinely give at least 20% discounts and have sales on the hottest titles for even more off the retail tag. Even after you pay for shipping, it's so often cheaper to do it on-line.
Also, if you're interested in the biggest new releases, go the first week they hit the shelves. The big retailers like Best Buy and Suncoast usually put the big titles on sale for the first week or two, prices equal to the discounts the e-tailers offer. But once they leave the front racks and go into the regular stock, those prices go right back up. So shop early and shop often, or shop on-line.
I do about a 60%/40% split of buying DVDs brick-and-mortar/on-line.

Good point Holden. I bought a CD online once and ended up paying more for it online than i did just driving 10 minutes and buying it out of a store. Since then, I've stayed away from buying online, but if there's a big difference from online to the store, I might go back to buying online. :)
Here are my recommendations for good dvds:
-Do the Right Thing (Criterion Collection) $39.99 (Worth every penny of it, too. One of the best movies ever, with the best bonus features and transfer available)
-Rushmore (Criterion Collection) $29.99
-Boogie Nights (New Line Platinum Edition) - $19.99 (they came out with a double disc version, but this one has an awesome, awesome commentary and most of the same special features, it's the better buy by far)
-JFK Special Edition - $19.99
-The Cider House Rules (Miramax Special edition)
-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
-L'Avventura (Criterion Collection) - $39.99 (Great special features and an awesome transfer)
