Kevin Spacey is my 2nd favorite actor. That said, I can't believe he agreed to this script. Every day that goes by I hate this movie more. It is a tie for the most transparent piece of filth I have seen in years with 'The Patriot.' (By the way if you liked The Patriot, you will probably like Pay It Forward.) Spacey, Hunt, and Osment are good, as would be expected, but the script is just so terrible. Beyond the principle actors the casting is horrid. Jay Mohr annoyed me. Hunt's mothers role in 'pay it forward' is helping a burglar escape from the police? That's a utopian act of kindness, is it? The criminal (who helped the lawyer's daughter in the ER) is an obnoxious cliche, not to mention the fact that he lied about his participation in "pay it forward' indicates that he didn't even understand what he was doing. My only high note here is that most reviewers agree with me and are shredding this movie. trash.

I must not be as sophisticated a movie watcher as you guys. I thought this was an entertaining, feel-good, great movie. But then, like you said, I also liked the Patriot.

My mom saw this movie, she said she couldn't stand it! The morals were horrible (i.e. grandma helping burglur) and the ending she hated (won't give away, but very sad)

I'm not gonna see it, i can't wait for the new movie with Cuba Gooding Jr. and robert de nero, the one about old fashioned scuba diving in the army. And also THE GRINCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I'll have to agree that some of the people didn't have great morals. I think that was part of the point though; even the slimier people paid it forward. You couldn't guess who would pay it forward based upon his depth of character or how good of a person he was.

I just saw an episode about the making of Pay it Forward, and from that I can say that it looks like one hell of a movie...It hasn't come out in Australia yet, so I haven't had a chance to see it.

Well, has anyone seen it? Is it good/crap/ordinary? From what I can see, I'm really looking forward to seeing it, especially with a cast like Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment!!

Here's a discussion on the subject:

Havn't seen it myself yet - definitely something I'll see on video.

Wow...old thread, eh? Anyway, I just saw this (HBO)...and I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it. This gooey sentimental sort of stuff is really not my bag at all...but It seemed very, very well-acted, so I couldn't help but like it. I'd give it roughly a 7 on a scale of 1-10. Good movie...

Spacey was good.

I thought the performances were universally solid and the story was interesting, but the ending just absolutely ruined the movie for me.

I don't think this is a spoiler, but T will fix it if it is :)

What is the moral of the film? Do good things and help people if you want, but in the end it really doesn't matter b/c ****e happens and the world is a crappy place? Sure everyone lit candles and things... but COME ON! Think how could the film could have been without that ridiculous ending!

Personally, it was sad that because of the sacrifice made, everyone came together. I mean that's like tightening airport security due to planes being hijacked.

All in all, a good movie, but don't put much stock in the ending...

Saw this on HBO last night, at like 1 in the morning, and I hafta say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Acting was awesome all around etc etc. I really didn't find anything wrong with it. Not only that, but I think the whole concept of Pay it Forward is brilliant, and I'd be lieing if I said I wasn't going to do it in my life.

I can completely relate, man. I think we were watching the same showing, too. It was like 12 midnight to 2AM. And yeah, the movie definitely makes you want to give that sort of thing a try yourself. To shock people with generosity. Who knows? Maybe the writer's big thing was making the movie, and getting us to think about this sort of thing. :)

I saw this when it came out back in the fall of 2000, and again on HBO the other day. The first time I saw it, I thought it was just OKAY. The timeline really confused me. I hated the fact that I heard too much American Beauty music (that was just wrong.... especially with Kevin Spacey in it. Is that now official Kevin Spacey music?)

Someone else caught that too. I saw Pay It Forward first, then I saw American Beauty, when I saw the latter I was like wait a minute, I've heard this music before.

I've actually noticed this music in quite a few movies over the past two years... of course I cannot think of a single title now, but there have been quite a few :)

Hmm... I don't like "The Patriot" (sounds boring. Never saw it) but I think I'll like this movie, even though I didn't see it yet. The only reason I wanted to see this movie because of Haley Joel Osment LoL AND people said that this movie was sad... When I go to my cousin's house, I'll watch it. (She has HBO) LoL.

This movie was definitely a mixed bag for me..Spacey was excellent, as always, but Helen Hunt was miscast and Hayley Osment was just annoying. The biggest surprise of the movie for me was a very effective supporting performance from a completely unrecognizable Angie Dickinson as Hunt's mother.
