Which one?
Why?
Discuss.
Of those I've been to (obviously...), Belgium (Brussels), or The US (New York). Both excellent on the food and architecture scales and that's what counts with me. Although I'm probably going to spend some time in Paris later this summer, and I hear that comes pretty highly recommended on both fronts.
I live in England, and my feelings of patriotism are generally lacking. It has its good points, but I don't plan on sticking around once I'm sufficiently educated.
Trinidad and Tobago. Duh.
Honorable mention: The Republic of Equatorial Kundu.

Except for my home country (Sweden) I have only spent a longer period of time in Ireland (six months) and no offence to the Irish, but I prefer Sweden.
There's a lot of countries I would like to go to and some that I sometimes even dream of living in for some time (Spain, parts of US, London perhaps), but I do enjoy being a Swede. There's of course several things I would like to see change here or things I think should be done differently. But I like the "basic idea" of Sweden and the nature here. And everything they say about beautiful Swedish/Scandinavian women is true. It is insane actually. The weather during most of the year is depressing though...
But enough with the Sweden promotion... As I said, I would love to go to Spain. I don't know why, but I think I would love it there. I met a lot of Spanish people in Dublin when I lived there and almost all of them were great people. Barcelona is the place I would like to go to the most... I have only heard good things about it from those who've been there (lots of Swedes go there all the time), except for that many seem to be robbed there. He he.. And there's this other cool place that I always forget the name of (3 hours from Barcelona on the freeway apparently) where Picasso and Dali used to hang out and now it's this really nice place with lots of cafés and music and culture and stuff... That's sounds like a place worth checking out.

You didn't say why, oh venerable one. I'm looking to move, and while I dig the gamelan big time, it's not enough to make me consider Trinidad or Tobago.

Out of the ones I have been to: Well the United States of course. Since it is my home country and it is the land of the free. There are beautiful buildings here such as the Sears tower, Empire State Building and just all the different places you can see, the mountains, beaches, deserts in one country.
Also France is also dear to my heart it is home to my Grams and Pop-Pop and where my dad was born. The museums are to die for and the Eiffel Tower is one of the best structures in the world in my opinion. Also the pastries are the best.
Southern Germany was a pleasure to live in for the three years I spent there in the 80's While in the Army. I loved the winters and the horse and carriges that were still being used in abundance.
Saudi Arabia was a beautiful place and most everyone was friendly when I was there for a few months.
I really want to make it to Ireland as I have a lot of family history there. I also would love to make it to Austraila
Been to a few other places, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Japan, and did a quick three day excursion to Russia in my younger days. Almost everywhere I have been has something amazing abut it. My favorite though is the good old U.S. It is not just pride, but some of the amazing geography here is awe inspiring. From the painted deserts to the rocky mountains to the white beaches here in florida we certainly have a varitey when it comes to geography. But hey it is also home and if you love home it is hard to imagine being anywhere else. So many opportunities are available here, not that they arent anywhere else of course, but I am proud to a U.S citizen.

I wouldn't apologise Pete, I'm not mad keen on Dubliners either though the majority of Dubs I know feel the same way about us 'Nordies'. If you'd spent time up in Omagh (56 bars in a town of 20,000 - and that was only the number we could name off the top of our heads one night ;)) your opinion might have shifted a little.
I'm no great fan of my own country at this time of year but I've lived in worse places and my mood always lightens after the last Saturday in August.
I couldn't pick a 'best' country for the life of me but, of those I've spent quality time in, if I could pick little bits of France, Italy, England & Russia and drop them into the North of Ireland I'd be happy.
I'd drop those bits here because it's here that I identify with and here where I'm most comfortably identified. I lived most of my adult life in a country other than Ireland, was darned happy for the majority of it and the thought of returning crosses my mind at least once a day.
If I was to move I'd have to take those little bits of France, Italy and Russia with me though...and a huge great dollop from West Tyrone. :)

I am glad that I am a British, and i maybe slightly more patriotic than you but i'm not too keen on living here for much longer. As soon as i get the dosh and fake my own death, I am outta here.

I've been to quite a few countries and I have to say that Britain's still my favourite. I'm not a patriot by any lengths, I mean I tend to feel a little uncomfortable around people who can use the word "empire" without flinching, but I honestly don't feel I could live for a great length of time anywhere else.
America's a lovely country, in many ways the antithesis of Britain. The people are warm and inviting, buses generally arrive on time and everything's either clean or in the process of being cleaned. It's terrifying. Americans don't understand the needs of a British person. Strangers talk to you when you're reading a newspaper for God's sake. That's a hanging offence on this side of the Atlantic. They don't understand how to queue, they never talk about the weather and shop staff engage you in discussions about music and smile warmly instead of throwing your change on the counter with a scowl. It's a freakish upside-down world where optimism rules with an iron fist and a sunny disposition. Worst of all, people don't moan. The six months I was there the worst I heard was a complaint about being mugged. In the UK I'm regarded as somewhat laidback, over there I was a real whiner. I left the place on the edge of a nervous collapse and I cannot tell you how relieved I was to return to the world of casual contempt and unspoken resentment that is the British public. I can play by those rules, I can chat about the weather and keep an internal tally of every minor wrong ever visited on me by a stranger. I can't cope with the US.
umm, most of continental Europe's ok. The French are much more like the British that either nationality would like to think. Germans actually have a great sense of humour when they're not trying to tell jokes they think the British like, another terrifyingly clean country though. Africa's largely a hellhole. I can't speak Japanese and the country leaves me feeling like I've just come out of a densely-populated acid trip. China unnerves me, it's the one country I've visited where the hotel TV didn't carry BBC News and I couldn't get a copy of the Times sent to my room. Australia's too hot, Canada's too cold and Russia's too likely to kill me while I'm sleeping. The Bahamas are too laid back and the rest of the tropics are either too unstable or corrupt. Give me the tabloid press, the vast tracts of industrial estate and the witless nostalgia for greater times of dear old Blighty. I don't want to live in a world where leaders are respected instead of villifed or intelligence is lauded over pig-headed common sense. I like the fact the average British person bears an unassaiable sense of superiority to everybody in the world. I am British, hear me apologise when you walk into me!
Christ, I guess I am a little more patriotic that I thought. Even if it's through inversion.

Having grown up in the US, I am both accutely aware of its faults and often simply bored with living here.
Of the places I've been:
Norway is the most beautiful, and probably the nation with which I feel the most spiritual connection. A little chilly though.
Japan is endlessly entertaining, as well as beautiful. There's always something new to do or see. The people, on the other hand, are less appealing.
Mexico smells and Canada is boring unless you're fishing. So much for North America.
I loved Argentina, but in all fairness, I've only seen the far south (and again, spent the time fishing).
Jamaica has some lovely areas, but the poverty/wealth divide is painfully obvious, even in areas that cater to tourists. And service sucks.

Then go away
Well you all live in countries with oportunities and i live in Bulgaria The land of no perspectives.I love the country Bulgaria, but the Goverment sux.It has the most beautiful women in the whole wide world belive me!
But i must admit that USA is the best country[with perspective for a good life(no wonder everyone emigrates in the USA)] in the world

I'll give you three guesses......
God said to St.Peter :
Let me create the most perfect land,
it shall have the freshest fish in the sea,
the most tasty livestock on the land,
there will be an abundance of fuel, coal, gas and oil,
the freshest water in the world,
the greenest hills on the planet,
and a pure golden nectar by the name of whiskey,
this oasis on earth shall be called Scotland.
St.Peter says to God :
It sounds too perfect to be true.
to which God replys :
Wait to you see the neighbours I'll give them!!!
Apart from my home, I love New York as my favourite city, but I love travelling and have found few places that I wouldn't return to, looking forward to a return trip to New Zealand, and I'll post my comments on Toronto on my return.
I do like parts of England, the far north part of the island,.....oh wait........... ;D

i've never really been anywhere, but i'd say the U.S. of A. is pretty tight, New Zealand ( because of the hobbits ), Australia ( because of the sexy accent ), England ( because of the language and the green green grass ) and Ireland ( because i feel their mentality is really similar to croatian )...
honorable mention, Spain, because it's vibrant and gay ...:D

New Zealand looks amazing.
I love Austria and switzerland.
But for sentimental purposes Syria is a beautoful place to be also, everyone is concerned with making life pleasurable..and if you can imagine a society not based on money and not concerned with it...then you have the syrian social scene.
I'm an aussie to be sure but I grew up overseas and oddly enough I grew up in Papua New Guinea. If your're looking for beautiful weather, amazing plants/animals and a culture almost untouched by the west that's where you can find it. It's as if all the commercialism has come to PNG and they've just said yeah we'll take some of this stuff but you can stick your lifestyle somewhere not so nice. I really dig the sense of community I found there and everyone is just smiling all the time and the weirdest part is that everyone greets each other as they walk down the street like we all somehow know each other.
One time when my dad's friend got his house robbed he just went down to the local village and they got it all back for him real quick......sense of honour that I've never seen anywhere else. Simple people, simple lives and they just love it. I've been to the United States, China, England, Scotland, Singapoure, Japan, Hong Kong, France, New Zealand and even the surf capital Hawaii and it hasn't changed my mind one bit :)
Mexico smells
What does it smell of?
and Canada is boring unless you're fishing.
You travelled where exactly in Canada?
Sweden comes to mind first because of the free education and health care program and legalized gay marriage and universal daycare. Don't know what it's like to actually live there though. I actually met someone from there a few months ago while at a bar and we ended up drinking and chatting together about what it's like there. I couldn't understand a word she said though and I was drunk so god knows why I mention it. Oh no wait, she was from Switzerland.

I am not going to say the Canada is the best country in the world because that just would be just a little bias since I reside there. But to say it is boring I would disagree. The nightlife in the major cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Windsor, London, Kingston and even to the west like Winnipeg, Calgary, and Regina I have experienced some good night life there.

I find this a dumb question because you never illustrated in what perspective you meant by "The Greatest Country In The World" so how could you even hope to get an answer that can actually to a bracket of people, be a valid claim.
Ofcourse, However, if you mean what country has the largest collection of things that can and are argued as great or the greatest, the answer, encompassing all perspectives of Geography and Society would have to ofcourse be The United States (Still. It's not as Great as it used to be even though many people think it is). It has every climate, three large coasts, more famous cities than any other country (Except maybe a few, Italy) is the most powerful country by far, has the strongest economy, and has been the one entity that has given the single most influence in shaping modern history itself. The One thing we don't have however is ancient war hero's. There has never been a country in the category the United States is in in all history (except maybe egypt).Unfortunately our traditions, values and culture is declining rapidly so your guess is as good as mine how long we'll be there. By the time I die, it might be China.

i'm sorry, i forgot to comment on this rediculous post....pick any old country from europe and it will have "a larger collection of things that are great". arguing that size makes a country great is obviously bull, otherwise Canada and Russia would be greater countries than america ( and russia actually is, at least as far as the overall contribution in culture and the diversity of natural beauties )..more famous cities than any other country? aaahahahha...please man, don't make me laugh, what makes a city famous? being mentioned in some american tv or film product? yeah man, i'm sure those people in africa, china and india know where boston and philladephia are....hats down to your country, but new york is the only city worth mentioning in a broader perspective...all other cities are generic, indisinguishable new world cities....uncomparable to old world cities...
also , being the most powerful country in the world ( read: being a bully ) doesn't neccessarily mean it's the best country to live in...i know as far as i'm concerned, the us is no longer a desirable destination...

I don't actually live in New Zealand, regrettably - I live in the "U.S. of A.," as you put it. I rather think the problem with the States is that there are too many houses. I don't care for man-made landscapes, and scores of people living right outside my home for miles make me anxious. I've poo'd in the woods before. I had to lean against a tree. It was pretty uncomfortable. Next time I'm going to use the buddy system. I'm sure most countries have their open landscapes. As in regards to that it's unfortunate that here, in the U.S. of A., when we protect something we generally cut it off from everyone. I wish I was an Indian back in the day. Except for the poo deal. I guess it comes with the territory.

You mean you'd rather lean up against your buddy while you're crapping in the woods? And he wouldn't have a problem with this?

I rather think it's unfortunate that, in this country, when we look at a beautiful piece of woodland these days, we only see the housing subdivision we're going to build there. Of course, that's not true of everyone, but it's most certainly a great deal true for those who are in the position of deciding whether a forest stays or goes. Otherwise, we wouldn't have to protect our land so fiercely.

Cool.
Its a sensuous little island with lots of trees and flowers, some mountains and lots of room to play. There are peaks and valleys and although life here isn't always easy it is a fun place to live. We work hard, play harder and we have the most extensive collection of movies and books on the planet. We are a creative bunch who are as diverse as we are passionate. And there are several "clothing optional" areas of the island, but you will have to find them yourself because they aren't listed on any map.

I spent 7 months living in New Zealand, and while many people may not consider this enough time to get a real understanding of a place and culture, i am confident that i was immersed enough to make the proper comparisons. I will say that New Zealand has some of the most beautiful land i have ever seen. The people are laid back, welcoming, and have a great sense of humor. Life isnt taken to seriously over there.
Having said all that, i still have to say that the United States is the greatest county, today, and probably of all time. Here's why:
Geography
The United States is huge. It spans such a large amount of land, and within this land you can find just about any geological formation you wish. I've seen sights in the Rocky Mountains so beautiful they've brought me to tears. I've wandered the redwood forests of California, ridden horse trails in Montana, sipped Whiskey Sours under huge cotton trees in the south, gawked at the colors and magnificence of the Grand Canyon or Monument Valley. Rivers, Mountains, Deserts, cities, forests, lakes, whatever you wish is there; and without the vicious sandflies of southern New Zealand.
Culture
There is the old saying that America is a melting pot. Quite cliche, if you ask me, but perhaps there is no truer statement about this country. Since the country's creation people have came from every corner of the earth to build a home, hang their hat, and yes, the old cliche of finding a better life for themselves. Here is the beauty part: because of the way out country was created, these immigrants didnt have to conform to anything. They could bring their cultures with them, and those cultures themselves could find a place to settle down and flourish. Sure there were difficulties, but slowly the majority of the country has come to accept it.Today, i can walk the streets of New York and hear 3 languages in a single city block. I can wait patiently to get a hot dog from a Muslim vendor who is taking a few minutes off to pray. I can choose to ignore the christian fundamentalist preaching on the corner. I can go see a french movie at an art theater. Has anyone ever been to a 4th of July parade? Bikers, Lesbians, Gays, Shriners, Democrats, Republicans, Green Party, environmentalists, protestors, veterans, students, war re-enactors- people of every flavor. We live in a quicksand of culture, where everything that is introduced is immediatley absorbed and given its proper place. I may not agree with a lot of it, but as a real American it would be hypocritical of me to denounce any of it. As long as it isnt hurting anyone, i belive it belongs here, in this great country.
It is true that i havnt explored every corner of the earth, but when i do, i doubt that i will ever find such an amazing collection of culture.
A few more bullet points to come, perhaps...
It is true that our administration hasnt exactly pleased me over the last several years. They have made decisions which have brought me sick to my stomach- but that doesnt mean im about to turn against my country. And everyone can criticize me all they want, saying how evil it is to love america nowadays- but it wont change anything. Because at its core, America isnt war. America isnt inperialism or facism or a dictatorship, America isnt hypocritical, America isnt torturing, America isnt rude or insensitive or ignorant. America is, at its best, the point at which all other earthly points collide- this is to say that it is, in a sense, the lexicon of what it is to be human, to be an earthling. These evil things everyone is saying about America, they only exist because of the nature of this quicksand- that letting the good in will also let in the bad- that with light comes darkness- and these evil things are the result of evil people, people who could exist in any country at any period in time, but chose to exploit America as an outlet for their evil because of the way we are built.

Hah, yes, if only Canada were known to embrace such liberal policies of humanitarianism, let in minorities and manage to get their hands on some decent geographical features.
It's a good post, I really don't mean to sound like a jerkface, but they just don't sound like features completely unique to America.

They aren't.
Lets face it, if you live there where you live will be the greatest country on earth.
I could pick apart America for all its faults but I won't because they aren't for lack of trying. As an American, what I don't like about my country has much more to do with its hubris and lack of ability to learn from its mistakes.
What I love about my country more than anything else is the fact that we have such great potential to move beyond the dogmatic constraints of our beloved Constitution, beyond the petty racism and sexual bigotry and beyond the bounds of what would be acceptable in a country not so new as ours.
What is the greatest country on earth? That is more a matter of personal opinion that rational argument, but for my money I believe there is no such thing. I love my country because my country is where I live. It to me is like being "proud" of your race, it is a moot question in the grand scheme of things.
It's a good post, I really don't mean to sound like a jerkface, but they just don't sound like features completely unique to America.
By no means are they unique to America. Nothing is unique to America because everything we have we got from somewhere else. Even ideologies and beliefs and systems- things developed by wiser people in wiser countries- we take and adapt them- and to me that is the beauty- the US being the intersection of everything. May sound a bit pompus- but i believe it. (This isnt to say that this comingling is even unique to the states- but it really seemed to be in earlier times. Globalization has kind of changed everything.)
And if you maple suckers up there dont like it- you can go slap a puck around or something. ;) (just kidding. Canada is cool.)
