Neat, yeah. I'm a whisk(e)y snob, so I don't like to ruin the flavor with water or ice.

I suppose it counts. But you are aware that that stuff causes cancer...and the spontaneous growth of vaginas, right?

I think it has something to do with aspartame.

Some kind of cider called "Alpine Warmer". Pretty strong stuff by the looks of it- but it was super cheap. budget drinking for the next few weeks for me...

Drinking; Carona (it's an imported mexican beer, pretty good too), Becks and Carlton Draught. No i'm not some insane boozer but I like variety. Actually I'm fairly careful with how much I drink which is pretty rare at 19. The reason why I'm drinking alone tonight is that I went to a friend's party yesterday night and forgot all my beer! Although through this process I discovered how nice people were which was cool cause a bunch of people were offering to share theirs :D So here's to them! *drinks rest of bottle*

Carona similar to Corona? Cuz Corona is lush with some lime.

Anyway, having a street BBQ with old people and young children, can't find anwhere to comfortably socialise so back here with my Fosters.

I have a bottle of Glenfarclas 1965 at home, I'll have a glass of that when I get back from uni - maybe tomorrow. Then I'll go and buy a bottle of cheap scotch to keep me alive until the next time I have an excuse to drink something posh.

How does the '65 compare to their more readily available bottlings, most of which are...ok?

I have no idea to be honest. It was on thewhiskyexchange.com (probably the best site on the net) for about 90 quid (independent bottling), and having never seen a 40 year old scotch for less than several hundred, I thought what-the-hell. Yeah, I know age isn't everything but there you go.

My favourite regular drinking scotch is probably the Talisker 18, or the Lagavulin 16 Distiller's Edition, which packs more punch than the regular 16. Macallans are nice, but overpriced.

Any recommendations for my next not-so-pricey bottle? I was thinking I'd try a Springbank, or maybe a Bowmore but so far the only Islay I've really like has been the Lagavulin. Ardbeg and Laphroaig are a bit fiery for my taste.

Heh, the standard 10 year old Ardbeg is far and away my favorite scotch of any vintange from any distiller that I've tasted. Glentaucher's 14 y.o. is another personal favorite, but if you tend to like the less heavy bodied whiskies, it may not be for you.

It needs to be emphasized that I am primarily a bourbon drinker. I like the darker and generally more complex flavors you get with bourbon, and it's not hit and miss at 70 bucks a try like single malt scotch, where at least half of what you're paying for is the mystique of the whisky, not its quality.

-----

Personal feeling: anything over about 15 y.o. in bourbon is going to be disappointing. Because scotch is generally aged in used barrels, you can stretch it out to 25 years for a single malt, but I've got a sneaking suspicion you may find out that any whisk(e)y that's been sitting in wood for 4 decades tastes pretty much like...wood.

Ah well, coming from Northern England the only bourbon I have a chance to buy is Jack Daniels, which tastes like throat cancer.

I didn't mind the Ardbeg 10 that much, but as I say, a bit fiery, tasted too alcoholic.

EDIT: TWE has quite a bourbon range, I'll get a bottle one of these days.

It's not bourbon in any event. And yeah, I'm aware that most decent bourbons are unavailable or at least hard to find outside the US and Japan, which is unfortunate. Rye whiskey is likewise pretty much a US only thing now, which is unfortunate, because Sazerac makes a straight rye that is one of the best whiskies of any variety anywhere in the world. Even Beam's yellow label 'Mild and Mellow' (big ****ing lie) rye whisky is a winner (at about $17 US a bottle).

I didn't mind the Ardbeg 10 that much, but as I say, a bit fiery, tasted too alcoholic.

Hmmm, in that case, you might want to add a drop or two of water (but no ice).

Ah yes, I must admit to tending to drink it neat, like the peasant that I am. Ever ordered it with water in a pub/bar? I think I have twice and both times got more water than whisky. The other day I asked for a martini (Bogart wouldn't be impressed) and the guy asked if I wanted lemonade in it, I hate when people have no taste in booze.

Well, the one vagina I have has served me well all these years, so I think I'll keep to the Diet Coke with Splenda myself. Except that I can't find it any more, so I've been drinking iced coffee or Diet Dr. Pepper.

As for alcohol, I'm not much for liquor and so not a snob about any of it. I like what I like: Killian's Irish Red if you're talking beer, or Guinness (as long as I don't make that mistake of drinking it with dessert...gahh!). I also like a good rum and Coke.

Or fruity wines. I have NO defined taste buds beyond that. I just like what I like but will try anything.

Now, you snobs can go back to discussing whisk(e)y right down to the characteristics of each molecule. Carry on!

I've heard many times that the proper Scottish way is with a little water, but I don't find that that tends to make a huge difference, if any at all.

Very possibly the best whiskey in the world, complex, perfectly balanced, and, at 68.8% ABV, it's nice and rugged, the way whiskey should be.

I certainly do not condone drinking alcohol, but I am somewhat sure it does not kill brain cells. Your liver may suffer sure, even ones kidneys, but brain cells.............nah............that or I have plenty to lose. My I.Q. goes up every year; and while I am a humble guy I do know that an I.Q. of 50 isnt too bad. (really it is 158 last time I checked :D ) I also like women, boobies and classic rock, but then again one of my fav films is Flash Gordon. Oh yeah I once went fishing with a cane pole and bread as bait and caught a tiger shark.......no lie, but hey life is fun isnt it?:) :)

BobbyB
07-08-06, 12:47 AM
Nah, alcohol really does kill your brain cells. It doesn't wipe every single last one out, but it does kill them.

I actually bought my cousin a key chain at Spencers that says "Imagine what I could do if I had all my brain cells?" LOL

I guess she thinks the alcohol says "Let's see here, which brain cells is she not using..." ;)

The actual impact on intellectual capacity from recreational drinking is so minimal that it doesn't even bear mentioning.

Obviously, it doesn't follow that you can drink yourself into a stupor on a regular basis without suffering long term effects, but even low-level alcoholism doesn't measurably impact intellectual capacity.

You lose brain cells regardless of what you do. We're talking about individual CELLS. Occasional drinking will not impair your brain function. On the other hand, there are a number of things that can result from heavy drinking (including the restriction of blood flow to the brain during trauma) to hurt not only your brain, but other vital organs. I'm sure others here have said as much. ;)

I'm currently drinking tomato juice.

Tequilla is actually on my never drink again list. At least not shots. I get sick thinking about it, so I will not go into detail why. This is, of course, just me, if it is what you like all well and good :). Voldka is my vice of choice, but I really do try to drink only every now-n-then. I tend to get on the computer a lot and "spill my beans" when I drink, so it probably seems like I drink a lot. Yeah maybe a few times a month ... 3 or 4 times, but I certainly do not overinduldge everytime I drink sometimes its only a shot or two, other times it may be a pint or two:D, but that is rare.. In my mind anyway.

I can remember my first experience of tequila slammers as if it was yesterday (15-odd years ago, if you're counting). I watched my mate projectile-vomiting his effort about 6 feet on to a bedroom wall while I downed yet another.

My propensity for being able to hold drink more than likely contributed to the train wreck of my mid-20s.

It's, sadly, in my nature... ;)

Purandara88
07-10-06, 04:59 PM
I've never understood the fear of tequila. The effects of alcohol are pretty much a product of the strength of the drink and the amount consumed. If you're getting sick, it's not because you're drinking tequila, it's because you're drinking too much.

Remind me never to get drunk with you then! :D

I've demolished a table in my time too - drunk and waiting for a taxi, I spied a table where I could rest my weary arse so sat on it's edge. Little did I realise that it was a wallpapering table which wouldn't take the weight of a well-fed gnat. The table fell in a heap and so did I, with two 6 inch long cuts on the inside of each forearm. I didn't even realise I was bleeding until I woke up the next morning with my arms stuck to the sheet.

Drunken Paddys? Complete stereotype, I can assure you.

I got drunk once on apple martinis, and then decided to have one more - a watermelon one. I 'watered' the ivy when I got home, because I couldn't wait to hurl til I got inside. And I had to throw out my watermelon scented hairspray after that -the smell of it made me ill, even weeks later.
