:(:(........ whyyyyy?!?!?! this sucks....

Coz they took off Riquelme and went too defensive after the goal, allowing Germany back into the game (Same mistake they made against England in a friendly a while back). That was compounded by the injury to the goalkeeper, which meant there was no chance of bringing someone like Messi on.

It's their own fault.

I'd say ;)

3-1 on penalties to Portugal.....i wasn't expecting that result, but that was one instense game to watch.

Now England are out I'm now supporting Germany!!!!

Knew it was a bad omen though when the ref turned out to be Argentinian. And combined with Portugal's dirty play we really didn't stand much of a chance for fair decisions.

Whilst I believe Engerlund have been poor from the start, I was appalled at Portugal trying to walk the ball into the net, and Ronaldo showed a nasty petulant side that will win him few friends!!!

Don't think Portugal will get past the next stage, they looked like a side bereft of strikers capable of putting the ball in the net, 60 mins against 10 men, although perhaps the side to side midfield did little to help.
Ah well, at least I can enjoy the rest of the World Cup now, c'mon Brasil.

Ignoring the troll...

Whoever said Brazil were there for the taking got it spot on. ;)

France bossed them out of it, just as they did to Spain. All they need is Laurent Blanc wheeled on in a bathchair to give the increasingly Donald Pleasance-alike Barthez a kiss on the bonce and we've got '98 all over again.

With wrinkles.

And England? To be honest they didn't deserve to go any further as Portugal look a very average team. Tactically inept and lacking in any sort of passion until they were down to 10 men, bye bye Sven - it's been underwhelming. It's just a pity that nasty little sh*t Ronaldo gets to play in a Semi.

With France in this form I'm betting the graceless oik won't go any further. It's just a pity I didn't stick a tenner on the French a week ago.

Ay, after that first half, we deserved no more. A team that looks to win games from set-pieces (which is basically what we were doing with that set-up) is never gonna set the world alight ;)

I take some pride in the fact that the ten men fought so hard, and created the better chances. And that England still can't be seen off without penalties ;). But that's about it. Can't see that there'll be any huge changes under McClaren's rule either. But we can always hope ;):)

And at least there was finally 90mins of excitement in the end. For the non-neutral ;)

Ach well, time to support Murray in the tennis now instead. Just to piss off the Scots :D

You're a better man than me!!!
Honestly I felt sorry for England today, but as you stated, England only seem to have a one dimensional gameplan under Sven.
On today's showing, neither England or Portugal deserve a semi final place, both teams were poor and lacking any real imagination.

So, fall-out from today will be Ronaldo being rightly booed at every ground next season, that's if he deems Man Unt still worthy, I just hope the media don't have another witch hunt over the boy Rooney.
With both my pre-tournament tips out, Brasil and Argentina, I would like Italy to win, perhaps the whole Pessoto episode will have a galvanising effect, but if Zidane pulls out another top performance, who would bet against them?
The only thing I feel sure about is that Portugal won't progress further, but like so many of my other posts in this thread, this'll probably come back to haunt me.

i thought both teams ( Portugal and England ) were very good actually, especially in teh first half....it's just that they were equally good so no goals...( and a bit of bad luck )....

and i have to say that i would love to see Portugal win it....i know they don't have a big chance but i'm really sick and tired of the same "big" teams winning it...

plus with Deco back, who knows....i honestly don't think France is that good...anyone can be beaten....

Well it looks like this Brazil vs. France game is the only game that I completely mispredicted (see my last few posts)....b ut what a great game. My team is out but for some reason i really really enjoyed the way france played. So now that my favorite team is out and seeing as how france is getting stronger and stringer....i'm now rooting for France..although I wish portugal wasn't up next. We'll see.

Such a good cup this year.

Well the good thing about England going out is there will be no more Sven and his defensive plays and favouritism (Heskey, Lump-lard).

I knew the moment Lampard came up to take a penalty that he would miss. His world Cup goal attempt record just speaks for itself.

However the biggest shame about the whole game is that it took the sending off of Rooney for the true English passion to come out.
It was 13 to 9 then. (The ref and Lampard secretly wearing Portugal colours.)
That was the first time in the entire tournament that I thought, YES WERE PLAYING THE WAY WE SHOULD BE!!!!
But too little, too late.

There was passion in our play, once we went a man down. I reckon that's what Rev was saying. That's worth a tiny bit of respect ;) :p

And we did actually score a few sweet goals along the way Eq, from open play. I ain't saying we played the beautiful game, but we did show sparks of it along the way ;)

Yea, I'd agree with that.

But Golg, I would argue that Ecuador, Tunsia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Spain,Holland, and Switzerland all showed the same if not more sparks of beautiful play and they didnt make it as far as england.

Theres a difference between saying england has sparks of beautiful play (they are the national team they better have it) and saying they have sparks of beautiful world cup play.

I think Italy played incredibly well. All the different sections of the team were world champion-like. Buffon, Cannavaro, Grosso, Zambrotta, Pirlo, Gattuso, Iaquinta... All fantastic. I was a little worried there for a while that the game would go to penalty kicks or, even worse, that Germany would do what Italy did and score a late goal. That would have been so unfair. In my opinion Italy owned the game. Together with France's performance against Brazil I think the one that Italy gave us tonight was the best one in this tournament. I think the final has all the chances of becoming a great one, no matter which team wins tomorrow. And I think it's good for the life of the bronze game that Germany will be in it.

Best game of the tournament so far, fantastic end to end stuff with Italy as deserved winners. So like the scandal surrounding Italy and the 82 WC, it appears that the Italians are determined to take some of the shame surrounding their home league away, who'd bet against them for the title?
Nice to see Del Piero get a goal, I just hope if they play France that we have a different outcome to the 2000 final between the teams.

I've got mixed feelings at the mo, as I sit here in my Italy top, I'm glad they won, they've probably been the most consistent team of the tournament and have played some good if not spectacular football at times, but I was sad to see Zidane bow out of football on such a low note.
ZZ has been one of my favourite players for years, and it's not the first time his dark side has reared it's ugly head, just a pity he ended what has been a glittering career with a moment of madess.
So, to sum up 2006 WC, best game was probably the Italy v Germany semi final, end to end stuff, goal of the tournament has to go to Argentina, the second against Serbia was a great team effort, but for spectacular, it has to be the goal against Mexico. Player of the tournament is a hard one, nobody has really shined, all the players with big reputations failed to live up to their pre-tournament hype, but I like the fact that Grosso the left back for Italy has come from relative obscurity to score a crucial goal in the semi final, and the winning penalty, although Gattuso, Zambrotta and Canavaro have all been outstanding.
Surprise team of the tournament has to be the revitalised Germany, great team to watch with a bright future.
Biggest disappointment has to be Ronaldo, although he's broken the goal scoring record, on this tournament's performances, it couldn't have gone to a more selfish or undeserving player.
So, a good World Cup, not a great one, but in the end Italy were deserved winners.
Did I mention my personal highlight was the penalty shootout between Portugal and England, it wasn't really, but as I've wound up the English Mofos for the past month, why break the habbit.

A disappointing World Cup after a great start for me. Zizou's headbutt was as unforgivable as it was perfectly executed - even in shame the great man reeks of class. ;)

The three Italians Stu mentioned were, indeed, fantastic all way through but Grosso ain't obscure in my book. He's a steal if you buy him early enough in FM2006, along with another couple of the Palermo defence to play in the WC. :D

That said, I loved Zizou slowly finding his feet, Big Paddy Vieira the same, especially when crushing the serial chokers of Spain. Willy Sagnol was my surprise of the tournament, especially as he's never proved his worth in Football Manager. Mad Jens Lehmann confirmed himself as my favourite current player, even showing a rare humility in asking for his long-time nemesis Kahn a final moment in the spotlight. ;)

Disappointments for me were Ronaldhino (he did nothing), the general standard of refereeing (if a 4th official can notify the ref of Zidane's headbutt then why can't they send a message for a blatant bit of playacting?) and the television coverage (RTÉ excepted, but I don't have a great reception for them so was forced to watch most of the footie on the Beeb and ITV) which veered from the banal - the BBC's 'golf club bar' mentality - to the even more banal - the entire ITV coverage where the only sensible pundit, Big Sam Allerdyce, being continually interrupted by witless questions about how England would fare against *insert name of team that Big Sam was talking about*.

If it wasn't for the contributions of Martin O'Neill, Gordan Strachan and, surprisingly, Marcel Desailly (who caused Captain Smug Lineker to have kittens when launching into a heartfelt and possibly libellous rant about the state of Italian club football) I'd have been tempted to watch the whole thing with the sound turned down.

The best thing about World Cups (since 1986 anyway) for me has been that they shorten the time between the end of the last and the start of the new 'proper' footie season with only a matter of weeks to go before my beloved Glentoran begin a probably fruitless attempt to dislodge the hated Linfield from the top of Norn Irish football... :)

I thought the World Cup was great, I was going for Germany to win but they came in 3rd. The U.S. was a big disappointment I thought, and most of the African teams that were in did very good.

Darth Stujitzu

Just to echo Tacitus' sentiments about the poor standard of punditry at the WC, Lawrenson, Pleat and Ian Wright have to be the worst of all time, none of them have anything remarkable, insightfull, or intelligent to say, special mention to his Royal Smugness Alan Shearer, I truely detest the man, his double standards make me sick.
I do like Hansen & Strachan on the BBC ( not just because their fellow Scots! ) and Ruud always has some intresting points to make when he's not kissing El Tel's backside on ITV, but I long for Sky Sports and their use of technology, but again without the banal Alan Smith.
Bring back Des Lynam!!!

Eric Cantona was a true pureblood Gallic gentleman. He knew that it's better to vent your frustrations on the jaw of a supporter rather than a fellow footballer, and he didn't even try to hide behind excuses like "provocation" or "my mother's in hospital" like that brute Zidane.

The World Cup was really fantastic. Germany is really the Worldchampion of the hearts. The German Team played very good. Better than other teams teams like Brazil. The mood here was amazing. Unfortunaley I wasn't in the big towns like Berlin but in my town there were big partys too. On every third car you saw the German flag and I never will forget this World Cup.
