Hey MoFos,

As some of you know, this site is graciously hosted by a web developer friend of mine, Rob. Rob and I share silly levels of site-related ambition and often bounce ideas off each other. One of his ideas has recently begun to come to fruition (rather quickly, I might add). Behold:

Supcast (http://www.supcast.com).

It's pretty simple: it's a service that lets you call a number, leave a message, and have that message sent to your blog or MySpace account. Ditto for text messages. You can even have your message sent to all your friends.

Anyway, Rob's looking for people to signup (it's free, of course), poke around, and give him some feedback. I think it's the least we can do, given all he's done for MoFo, and the service looks pretty wicked cool, besides.

Once you've looked around, feel free to contact Rob (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=10590) or just post your thoughts here.

Sites down.

For ex. call my cell and they leave a message, but it's sent to my Xanga or something? I don't think I clearly comprehend how it would work. Would someone listen to my voice mail and make a transcript out of it?

Hm. Must've been a momentary quirk; still loads fine for me.

It's the other way around, actually; you call a designated number and leave a message, and it's immediately added to their server.

For example, I just left a message by calling the Supcast number. The site has given me a block of HTML code which will embed a flash player into a website. The player will automatically list the Supcasts (messages) I've left. People can scroll through them. So, if I wanted to leave a new message for everyone to see, I don't have to get to a computer; I call a number, leave a message, and a few seconds later it shows up as the most recent entry anyplace I've put that player (IE: MySpace, Xanga, etc).

It also creates an email address you can either email or send a text message to, and the player will also display that.

It also has the ability to relay messages to other people who are "subscribed" to your Supcast, but I haven't played around with that yet.

Oh, so this is a way to use your phone to update your blog or "phone in" your story the way reporters used to. :)

I assume the voice recognition is good enough that you won't end up with something embarrassingly wrong on your site. And you wouldn't even know about it till you DID get to a computer and look at it!

Can you then edit your phone-entry on a computer once you're home ... just like other entries can be edited?

It doesn't transcribe your message; it embeds the actual audio clip into the player (which it gives you HTML for, so you can place it on your site/MySpace profile/etc). If you send a text message, the player just displays text, instead.

Sounds like a pretty cool idea, although I think the name could really do with a change.

I signed up for this yesterday. I haven't attempted to leave a message, but will give it a shot soon. It seems a cool idea to me!
