Mm-hmm. I always enjoy hearing new info reguarding dvd releases and what each contain etc. I often do searches and find that not all sites give us all the dvd releases. Always see something pop up in the store and think "gee, now why didnt that site mention this one". Anyways, the more the merrier for me. :)

This is a great thread JRs, thank you for the hard work and time.
I was wondering what you think about the Blue ray/Hd-dvd technology and if you have any "insider" knowledge of release dates of players and media. Every place I look is different in their thoughts and dates. I know that High def Tv is an amazing thing to watch in comparison to regular tv, but it is costly. What will these new DVDs cost? Any input would be great..Thanks.

So we'll be able to buy Superman Returns on DVD the week it's released in cinemas?
According to the temporary release information, yes.
Those players are too pricy for the moment. Better to wait to see who wins the battle between the HD and blu-ray anyways. And dont forget the expensive hi def t.v. that goes along with it. :(
I like the U-571 cover there. Nice picture.
I wonder how they choose which dvds they convert first to the buyers?

I know all about that.
Anyhoo, I reported DVD news for the media for over almost over a year and I know what I am talking about. The 14-Disc Superman Box Set will be put out Tuesday, June 27th - the week of the theatrical release of "Superman Returns". Along with a collaboration of a bunch of other Superman releated DVD titles.
As for the documentary "Look Up in the Sky", it will be released first June 20th and then on the 27th with the collection.
http://www.sneakpeektv.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/showletter.jpg
I've been reporting for www.dvdfanatic.com (http://www.dvdfanatic.com) for almost three years, and have access to all the press sites and it's my job to be scanning DVD news daily. It will not be coming out on June 27.
For one thing, this is a very high-profile release, yet Warner hasn't made a peep about it. It's 6 weeks away. For pre-orders and such to come in on time, and for all the coverage to file away, they'd need to have announced it by now. And they have, in that link I posted, saying it's coming out in Q4.
Another thing, which you even showed, is how your "early information" indicates that Superman Returns will be part of the 14 disc set. Surely, you would not think Warner would release its biggest title of the year on DVD 4 days before its theatrical debut.
As well, most of the Superman products (the animated series, the Lois and Clark series, the old 1950's series, the "Up in the Sky" documentary), are being released a week before, on June 20, a week and a half before Returns.
As well, in their frequent talks with the WB PR, the incredibly reliable www.thedigitalbits.com (http://www.thedigitalbits.com) had mentions of the Superman box set from them months ago, indicating that it would be released in the fall, alongside Returns.
If anything, there will be an HD only box set on the 27, with the original 4 films and some extras (and not Returns), with the standard DVD box set to come in the fall alongside Returns, and even more TV series releases.
If I need any more reasoning, let me know. In the meantime, I'd love to know how you know without a shadow of a doubt that a 14-disc box set, with Returns included in it, would be released only days before the theatrical release of Returns. Call me curious.

The folks over at SupermanCinema.com (http://www.supermancinema.co.uk/) have shared the early specs (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showpost.php?p=326016&postcount=7) for the set. If you're curious.
Those specs are not complete which is why I mentioned so in my earlier post (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showpost.php?p=326016&postcount=7).
I have no doubt in what you are stating and what you and The Digital Bits report, for I am sure you know what you're talking about. I am just reporting news that I have reported/received.
This specific one needs more time in order to get a full report for our readers.

Vin looks sooooooooo different with hair. Like a wimp hehe. Never even heard of this before. You watch this jrs? Any good?
Yes I have seen it. It's based on a true story. Besides his usual types of films like XXX, Pitch Black and the like, this film is one example that shows he can really act. Others that show his talent are in Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room.

Full Details (http://dvdinvasion.typepad.com/news/) on the Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy 2-Disc Set. In regards to the new Star Wars DVDs, I found this rant off of TheDigitalBits.com to be interesting, and completely discouraged me from buying up the new DVDs....
Well... it seems we've started a bit of a firestorm with this business we posted yesterday about the original versions of the Star Wars films on the forthcoming (9/12) DVD release being offered in non-anamorphic widescreen video only. So be it. Sometimes, you have to call it like you see it. The news is absolutely true by the way. We've confirmed it specifically with reps of both Lucasfilm and Fox. It is no rumor.
By the way, for those of you who don't know what anamorphic means on DVD, we refer you to our in-depth guide (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/welcome.html) on the subject.
What you will, in fact, be getting on the second disc in each of these new 2-disc sets (unless something changes dramatically and soon) are transfers of the original films that were done for the 1993 "definitive collection" laserdisc box set release. (By way of confirmation, Lucasfilm's Jim Ward had this to say about the transfers in the recent USA Today story (http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-05-03-star-wars_x.htm): "It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006.") Great. Thanks. Swell.
So the transfers, and the technology used to produce them, are MORE than a decade old. Of course, they're going to be digitally cleaned up a bit, and even a non-anamorphic transfer is going to look better in digital video on DVD than the same transfer would when presented on an analog laserdisc. Colors are going to bleed less, detail will be a little sharper. There's also apparently an additional bit of tweaking being done, because Episode IV will feature the original 1977 version of the opening crawl (sans the "Episode IV" text) which has NEVER been released on home video before, save for in excerpted form in the 2004 Empire of Dreams DVD documentary (which, we feel strangely compelled to point out, WAS ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN). In any case, the bottom line is that the transfers we're getting on DVD are old and they're non-anamorphic. The video resolution and quality is going to pale in comparison to the look of most other widescreen films on DVD.
A lot of people have been e-mailing us asking why Lucasfilm doesn't simply do new anamorphic, high-definition transfers of these versions of the films. Well... after confirming and posting the non-anamorphic information yesterday, we started making follow-up calls to various experts and industry insiders... you know, just to figure out what the hell was really going on. Were we crazy in feeling a little outraged about this? Was this really just a half-assed effort designed to milk Star Wars fans yet again? What was the real reason for the lack of new anamorphic transfers?
It's been reported previously that when Lucas went back to the original negatives of the Star Wars films in the mid 1990s, they were found to be in bad shape. Such bad shape, in fact, that had they not been restored immediately, the films could have been lost forever. So restoration is exactly what Lucas had done. Except that when he was creating the new 1997 Special Edition versions of the films... he cut the original negatives. So the original negatives of the theatrical versions no longer exist. Okay, we knew that. But what's the big deal? What about the original interpositive prints? What about high-quality release prints? Why can't Lucasfilm just use either of those elements to do a new transfer for DVD?
Well... at the same time as he was preparing the 1997 versions, Lucas apparently went on a little tear and recalled every release print of the theatrical versions that he could get his hands on, and he had them all destroyed. Which means that when Lucas said back in 1997 that the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars films no longer existed, he was serious. He apparently tried hard to make sure of it.
Nonetheless (and thankfully), we know for a FACT that beautiful dye transfer prints of the original versions of the films still exist in private hands, and that additional copies are preserved in a number of film archives around the world. What's more, Lucas would have been foolhardy if he didn't keep the original interpositives carefully stored in a climate-controlled vault for preservation's sake. Come on... of course he did. No one is THAT stupid that they'd just trash all the original elements of the films that made them rich beyond the dreams of avarice. In any case, neither the man himself nor senior Lucasfilm executives are willing to admit to that they exist, because as Lucas has said many times in the past, "They no longer exist."
So what are we left with? Either the films truly don't exist anymore, so it simply isn't possible to give them to you in state of the art quality (unlikely in the extreme, despite public and private statements to the contrary)... or Lucasfilm DOES have copies of the original versions in their vaults, and they're just unwilling (or too damn cheap) to spend the money to give them to you in state of the art quality... yet.
If the former is true, there can be no future anamorphic release of the original versions on DVD, and there can be no high-def release on the new Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD formats. Laserdisc is as good as it will ever get for those original theatrical cuts. If, on the other hand, the latter is true (and we believe it is)... Lucasfilm's greed is truly boundless.
Bottom line: This notion that Lucasfilm is doing the fans a favor by finally giving them the original versions on DVD in 2006... but in 1993 laserdisc quality... is baloney. In fact, it's unacceptable. Even though most of them probably don't even know what anamorphic means on DVD, or why they should care about it, the fact remains that the fans are getting bilked. We hate to say it, because we've known many of the folks at Lucasfilm for years now. But someone HAS to say it. It needs to be said. Lucasfilm can and should do better. Who knows? Maybe they're already planning to do better for the 30th Anniversary of the original Star Wars next year... and this is just one more bite at the pie in the meantime.
In regards to the new Star Wars DVDs, I found this rant off of TheDigitalBits.com to be interesting, and completely discouraged me from buying up the new DVDs....

According to the official press release, it doesn't say it is in Anamorphic Widescreen so, I don't think it's literally their fault into leading us think it is.
Well you know what they say. The Good George giveth, and the Good George, he taketh away!

Yeah, but you'd still think that Lucas and Co. wouldn't be so cheap to not give us anamorphic transfers. On one hand, he's finally caving in and giving the fans what they want, but on the other, he's still screwing them over.
I'll wait for the uber-special box set that will probably come around next year.

Yes I have seen it. It's based on a true story. Besides his usual types of films like XXX, Pitch Black and the like, this film is one example that shows he can really act. Others that show his talent are in Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room.Ok so i'm assuming you enjoyed it since you bought the dvd, unless you chanced it and bought it. Boiler Room was good and is actually on my list of "Dvds to buy" still. ;)

Yeah I had forgotten about that project. Always love going back to the original places to where certain scenes had taken place. Though they showed allot of that in the recent Holloween dvd special edition. It would be nice to see the fans interacting with the actors too if it shows much of that.
*edit* Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FC2GA0/102-7785842-8412961?v=glance&n=130) seems to think it will be released July 25/06.

There's no plans to currently bring a box set out for the Star Wars prequels. I'll assume that a mega box set will come out next year and will contain all of them, and more.
And there's new editions of Halloween 4 and 5 coming out in the summer too. Check www.davisdvd.com (http://www.davisdvd.com) for that news.
Complete "Slither" DVD Specs
DVD commentary by Writer/director/James Gunn myself and Nathan Fillion.
Deleted scenes, including the infamous Grant Grant meat filing scene, Grant Grant's speech to Brenda about how he loves to be human, "Starla and the inchworm", and many more. All these scenes also feature commentary.
Extended scenes, including the full porch scene between Bill and Starla, Kylie's more complete explanation of "The Long One," the full scene in the butcher shop with Grant Grant, and much more. These scenes also feature commentary.
The Gag Reel -- in which you can see just a hint of how many takes Elizabeth Banks screwed up by laughing.
"Who is Bill Pardy?" - this was a surprise we made for Nathan at the wrap party, in which the cast and crew essentially roasted him. I asked Nathan if he was cool with it being on the DVD, and he was... so... watch us brutally make fun of him...
"The Sick Minds and Slimy Days of SLiTHER" - A very in-depth, very well done documentary on the making of SLiTHER, featuring the whole cast and crew. I honestly couldn't be happier with this thing.
"Bringing SLiTHER's Creatures to Life" - a documentary on the prosthetics and CGI effects in the movie. Also wonderful.
"Slithery Set Tour with Nathan Fillion"
VFX Progressions, from start to finish, featuring kickass music by The Raymakers.
"The King of Cult: Lloyd Kaufman's On-Set Video Diary" - see the President of Troma Entertainment and the creator of the Toxic Avenger (and my old boss) find himself lost in the world of Hollywood with his cameo role in SLiTHER.
"The Gorehound Grill: Brewin' the Blood" - a short how-to-make-your-own-blood-and-slime video.
Release Date: TBA!

HERE (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=321061) is my Brick review from earlier this year. I found it very disappointing and that it tries waaaaaay too hard to be cool for the sake of being cool.
But...whatever. I mean, if it's got a good rating from IMDb users, it must be good.

But now, those foundations are crumbling, eaten away by corruption and excess. After eight years of war, two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome. A serialized drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives, Rome chronicles a turbulent era that saw the death of the republic and the birth of an empire.

Full specs and details are listed below. The set will be available to own when it hits store shelves October 3, 2006.
From Emmy Award-winning executive producer, creator and director Glenn Gordon Caron ("Moonlighting") comes "Medium," a chilling drama series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison DuBois. Emmy winner Patricia Arquette ("Stigmata," "Flirting with Disaster") stars as a young wife and mother who, since childhood, has been struggling to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people. Arquette received the Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category after the telecast of the initial 16 episodes of the critically acclaimed series. Allison DuBois (Arquette) is a strong-willed young mother of three, a devoted wife and law student who begins to suspect that she can talk to dead people, see the future in her dreams and read people's thoughts. Fearing for her mental health, she turns for support to her husband Joe (Jake Weber, "U-571"), an aerospace engineer, who slowly comes to believe that what his wife is telling him just might be true. The real challenge is convincing her boss, D.A. Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) -- and the other doubters in the criminal justice system -- that her psychic abilities can give them the upper hand when it comes to solving violent and horrifying crimes whose mysteries often reside with those who live beyond the grave.
Sofia Vassilieva and Maria Lark also star as Ariel and Bridgette, the two eldest DuBois children. This season, David Cubitt ("10.5") becomes a series regular in the role of Detective Lee Scanlon.

In a new interview over at The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/columns/grove_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002614570), Superman Returns director Brian Singer talks in-depth about how he came to be involved in bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen, and reveals a little bit about what you might expect to find on the November DVD & HD-DVD release of the film. According to Singer, all of the online "weblogs" that have been posted on BlueTights.net (http://www.bluetights.net/) will be included. Though he's yet to decide for sure, Singer may also include a major deleted sequence from the film. He's also preparing something called the In-Movie Experience (this would be for the HD-DVD version - watch for a similar feature on the yet-to-be-announced Batman Begins HD-DVD) where you can watch behind-the-scenes video on the making of the film in a windowbox while you're watching the film itself.

Does anyone know if there is going to be a Star Wars Box set with all 6 in it?
Don Fishies
06-14-06, 10:37 PM
Next year is the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars. I can only assume there will be something other than 3D versions of the films coming out to commemorate it...
As a Star Wars fan, I just can't see what else can be put out there. Besides the Uber 6 pack.

You're in for a treat, then. Im currently trying to sell the idea of a Walken-Edition Trilogy. What happens is we digitally replace Harrison Ford's head with Christopher Walken's, then, dub all the lines with his voice and mannerisms. We'd make a killing...and im sure Georgie would go for it...

Actually you should do it that and hand it over to YouTube. It would probably be a good cult turnout.

As a Star Wars fan, I just can't see what else can be put out there. Besides the Uber 6 pack. Well, there's always those deleted scenes that everyone has claimed to have seen somewhere, but George swears up and down doesn't exist (like the old versions of the original trilogy that are suddenly popping up in their subpar 1993 laserdisc form...).
Oh that reminds me.
Since Fox hasn't gotten back to me yet, do you have any idea which version of Rocky Horror is going to be included in the set with Shock Treatment?

I haven't seen the movie, but I assume it may be something to do with Spike Lee, or something related to the "number 4" in the film..
EDIT: I take it back. I'm going to say it probably is a feature on Denzel Washington and Spike Lee's relationship, as this appears to be their fourth movie together (others being Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Mo' Better Blues).

My first thought was "Oy, they've gone the way of Star Wars already!"
But it seems to me these discs would be worth it. It would definetley be nice to have the entire extended editions on one disc per film, and those new documentaries sound quite tasty.
And in the case that i actually have $$ when they're released, some sort of Weta statue extra would be cool, like they did with the extended editions.
Thanks, jrs. Keep up updated!
:D
P.S.-
I've never quite understood why the ROTK box is Blue and the TT box is Red. Seems to me it should be the other way around, like it is with my books.

I'm just curious what the transfers will look like, and how bad the compression on the discs will be.
As well, the news never really makes it clear how long the documentary is going to be, and if it's the same one on each 2-disc set.:p
You'd think New Line milked LOTR enough...

The restored and remastered DVD version of the 1992 Director's Cut will debut in September in the U.S. for a special four-month limited release, after which it will be placed on moratorium by WHV.
Then later in 2007, to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary, the studio will unveil "Blade Runner: The Final Cut," Scott's definitive new version of his science-fiction masterpiece. The film will be released theatrically in select major U.S. cities, followed by a multi-disc Special Edition DVD release which will also contain three alternate versions of Blade Runner: the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut, the Expanded International Theatrical Cut and the 1992 Director's Cut. The film is on one disc (via seamless branching), and the doc itself is on the second disc. It's the same for each one.

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman II will delight fans who, for years, have been imploring Warner Home Video via voluminous numbers of petitions, letters, phone calls and e-mails to release the Donner cut.
In fact, Donner had already shot most of the Superman II footage during Superman: The Movie. But as production on the sequel continued, creative differences between the director and the film's producers became irreconcilable and Donner left the project. Although Richard Lester was hired to finish production, he chose to make major changes to the film, leaving only vestiges of Donner's original vision and concepts in the version of Superman II that was ultimately released to theaters.
Now, nearly thirty years later, Warner Home Video is honoured to grant the wishes of countless Superman fans. With this DVD release, Richard Donner has become the first director in history to be able to complete a film he left during production with nearly all his footage "in the can." Adding back a substantial amount of that unused footage, the director has seen his original vision restored and brought to fruition.
Most notably, the "Donner cut" restores the Marlon Brando role, filmed for, but not included in the final theatrical release version of Superman II. The legendary Brando's performance as Jor-El has finally been restored in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son.
With so many other changes, large and small, including a variety of Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman, this Superman II will prove to be an eye-opening experience and an important addition to film history.
DVD features include:
English Dolby Digital 5.1
English, French & Spanish Subtitles (feature film only)
All new introduction by director Richard Donner
Commentary by director Richard Donner and creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz

Get yourself a multi-region dvd player, or do what i used to do before i got a multi region player for region 1 discs, I just copied the disc (i believe this to be legal as you are allowed to back up dvd's provided you own the original) i think the program was called dvd shrink or something like that, it was freeware anyway, and the copy you make should be region free and work on any player. (please check the laws regarding this in your area though) or with some dvd players there are codes you can program in to yor dvd player to make it region free, these are widely available online (just use google and you'll find them no problem, and again please check the law regarding this) or the only other option is to chip your player, as you would with a ps2 to play imported games,
or if you have a ps2 you can use an Action Replay or Xploder disc to disable the region coding on the console.
As i have stated i'm unsure about the law regarding any of these method's in the U.S so please check them and also check if any of these thing's can damage your equipment or invalidate your warranty (i don't believe any of them can damage equipment but you never know!!)

Yeah, that's the program. If the disc doesn't automatically specify a region when you open it up, when you go to copy it, it will ask you to, so you will need to find another program that allows you to make the disc region free.

Just spoke 2 a m8 of mine and he said that in the current version of DVD Shrink there is an option to set the region code you want, it's in a menu you can pull up before you encode the dvd on the re-author setting, If it doesn't automatically make it region free, also the recode option in Nero does the same job but dvd shrink is better and more reliable then Nero.
He is normally pretty good with his info so give it a go with any dvd you have that isn't in your particular region

Theres a new Dukes of Hazzard movie coming out sometime this year according do IMDB, it's a prequel to the original show and has a pretty decent cast. April Scott is playing daisy duke, one of my favorite actors christopher mcdonald is playing boss hogg which is awesome IMO. I saw willie nelson had a role as well which should be funny, i've only seen willie in short cameos in movies myself.
