View Full Version : DVD extras or not?

<rant> So you go and buy a DVD from wherever and after spending your hard earned on the film of your choice you get home, put your feet up, get the remote, get a drink, smoke or whatever floats your boat and settle down to awatch the movie, great so far, the movie was cool and now you check out the DVD extras, deleted scenes, blooper/gag reels etc and what do you find, one sodding directors commentary, and the so called extras are in fact an extra of the very same thing you've just seen.
This has happened to me with a few films, the DVD extras advertised were not what I got, anyone else had this problem? <rant over>
I would name the films, but for the life of me I can't remember (was a few years ago when DVD's were all shiny and new - not scratched and with something breeding on them)
Bring back the VHS (oops showing my age now)
could have been worse, could have said bring back black and white telly

naw, it would have really been showing your age if you had said something about laser discs.
in any case i hear what you're saying and i agree with it to a point. though i don't recall ever buying a DVD that advertised what it didn't have feature-wise, there are many DVDs being made that have no features except for Scene Selections or Setup... normally its smaller, lesser known titles, which to me is a bit pointless...if you are going to bother putting a smaller, lesser-known title onto DVD you might as well add a few enticing features for those that are die-hard fans. thats one of the biggest catches of owning the DVD.
I almost never watched DVD extras, I buy a DVD for the film, and I don't tend to care about seeing the 400 slightly different trailers or hearing the director talk through the movie. Deleted scenes are about the only thing I ever actually have a look at, and if there aren't any then it's no big deal.

That drives me nuts! Cut scenes and bloopers should be mandatory in every film!
Extras are a definite must!!!
Audio commentaries - They are a real learning learning experience with the film you watch. You get the director's and star's POV on just about everything during filming. Plus....even some times snippets on future projects.
Bloopers - A total hoot and simply entertaining.
Making of - Depending on what film it is, it can get really interesting. Especially ones on the ID4 and T2 DVDs (for ex.).
Deleted Scenes - Once in a while they show ridiculous scenes from films that are unnecessary, but there are ones that quite worthy.
Trailers - I'm just a trailer freak :p .
I love extras, and try to watch everything on each disc I get.

It's only happened me once (that I can remember, anyway). My copy of Flirting With Disaster was advertised on the box as having a director's commentary.
Ziltch.
And being a pigheaded sod, I spent ages pressing buttons and searching for hidden menus to listen to something that I only had a passing interest in. ;)

Ditto.
"Bring back VHS"? I'm sure you were just kidding but still feel compelled to point out: videos have NO extras (unless they come from a friend :D).

I love extras to if it were not for them i would just stick with VHS. oha nd by the way i have seen a few VHS with some sort of special features like my X-men VHS had interviews and the computer animated version of the fight between sabertooth and wolverien. they just played them after the credits rolled. But yea dvd extras can stop me from buying a dvd

I had The Usual Suspects on VHS with director's commentary. ;)
It was basically 2 tapes - one with the straight movie and one with the commentary track....in a box large enough to house a small family.
Gimme DVDs any day. :)

Yeah, but now DVD's are starting to become more and more basic. Now you have to buy a 2-Disc special edition as compared to back in the early 2000's when pretty much all DVD's came with 2 discs and were loaded with special features, all for the nice price of what it is to buy a DVD today minus all the goods.
Hollywood got smarter.

I did a reply to this earlier but my wireless cut out and I lost it. Anyway, I feel that any crappy movie should not be given the liberty of extra features. Any award winning film should be given ample room for features. That's basically what I had said, but I forgot most of it.

I at times feel they gab too much during parts you want explained. But audio commentaries are nice to have that is for sure.

DVDTALK.COM AND DVDACTIVE.COM, dont have all the dvds but they have a pretty good selection. If your looking for a good dvd review you can also try DVDMANIACS.NET.
I like DVDs with extras. There should be outtakes on every disk. I like it. But unfortunaley DVDs with extras are more expansive than DVDs without extras.

I love extras on discs, some of them are really entertaining, while others, not so much. What does annoy me however is when I buy a dvd and then they re-release it with a bunch of extras that weren't on the first release. Nothing worse than having to buy the same movie twice.
