Anyway, I do not wish to hijack so I will answer your question. I do not think I have ever opened a door for anybody else, I have enough trouble opening them for myself:p

I think it depends on the situation… but personally, I think it just shows good manners to hold the door open for others… regardless of gender… and especially for the elderly… many of them don't have the strength to open some of those heavy doors anymore and it tears me up to see little old ladies and gents struggling with a door that weighs more then they do…

If I'm opening and door and someone is behind me I will hold it open for them. It's not nice to let it slam in their face. Not over a measly couple of seconds of your time.

Also when I've been out and I'm waiting for someone I usually stand with the door open for other shoppers to go through after all I'm not doing anything else but standing there so I may as well be usefull.

What I don't like is how rude some people can be when you do hold a door open for them. They don't need to say thank you, that's not why I do it, but I don't appreciate the dirty looks I sometimes get. I'm not insulting their ability to open the door I'm simply doing a polite service while I have nothing else to do whilst I'm waiting.

I make no distinction with people.

No. I'll hold the door open for the next human being, gender doesn't matter. I don't open the car door for my wife, she's not an invalid. There are a few times I can flaunt my masculinity, like opening jars and killing spiders (what was that Woody Allen movie)?

But I have noticed this... there have been many occasions when I've held a door for an older woman or women, and they pass right by without a thank you. Like their entitled to my "service." That's the same mentality some older men have, in reverse.

With more equality at the workplace and the proliferation of gyms and exercise, there's no longer such a physical discrepancy between the sexes. And maybe there never was, with all the manual labor women did in homes, farms and gardens.

So ladies, I love ya, but open your own doors. :D

i don't think its necessary, to be honest. i just think its common courtesy to hold the door for someone behind you, and like someone else said, for older people, or people that have their hands full.

That men should open doors....no...but it is awfully nice when it happens. Something as simple as opening a door shows polite manners and respect that is very nice to see in this day and age.

This is kind of a two parter for me...

As far as my husband goes...
He does still open doors for me most of the time. I usually don't expect it and reach for the door (except when we go out...I admit I do wait for him to open the door), but he's usually there with a hand to open it. Heck...after 17 years of marriage to a man who can at times can act Ray Romano....I'll take and always appreciate his need to open my doors. :p I know it's not a popular notion and sounds weird...but it's a niceity(sp?) that I've grown to like. And, in turn I do nice things for him as well. Funny how something so small can say alot.

As far as other men...
I don't expect it at all, but I always say thank you when it happens. I also hold the door open for other people as well....it's just the polite thing to do. It's sort of the same thing as seeing someone give up their seat to an old person on the train. It's not expected...but boy is it nice to see when it happens. It's all about consideration and respect towards others.

Certainly do, but it doesnt happen,and I dont expect it happen. It should happen regardless of gender, depending on what manners you were taught. I hold doors for everyone, and I have never been given a dirty look for doing it.

I think it is noteworthy when people let doors slam in my face. Its incredibly rude.

Wanna feel cherished though? Move to Miami. All of the men there treat you like an angel and the crowd will literally part to let you enter the door/vehicle/elevator first. And they do it for all women. One can get used to being treated like that, and at least you know what to expect: if there is a rush for a door, you know that it will be held for you, you know that if youre the only woman, you are going through it first. There's no weird misunderstanding about it.

Moved back north and had to reacclimate to guys letting doors slam in my face - and I never act stuck-up like they "should" hold the door for me, and I always say thank you (who wouldnt?? Its rude not to! Who raises these people???)

It just goes to show the cultural differences - we dont really value plain old, straifghtforward, not-trying-to-get-a-date-or-impress-my-girlfriend-only gentlemanliness anymore in western culture.

And that's sad.

I hold a door open for anyone, be they male or female, young or old. To me its just basic manners. I will either open the door and let someone through before me, or hold it open for them after I pass through...

I dont expect it but I always appreciate it. Someone is taking time out of their day to make someone elses a bit easier...even if it is just holding open a door.

I do it all the time for my female friends, they certainly don't expect it or anything but a few of them told me they appreciate it...which is nice to know.....it's my mum's influence really; open doors for women, don't start eating until everyone has their food, chew with your mouth closed and even stuff as simple as carrying anything remotely heavy.

I don't see it as some kind of role I have to adopt as a male but people do seem to appreciate it, so why not? I do it whenever I get on a train/bus/tram/anytime. Everytime I do I usually get a warm smile which is nice and worth the effort. Altho it does seem a bit alien nowadays.....I remember opening a door to a restaurant for my friend kirsten and then one of my male friends cut her off and stormed through.....somehow that's just not right in my mind....just my opinion. :)

I like holding the door for elderly people and parents pushing their big gigantic Tonka truck strollers. I just hate when I do this fifty thousand people try to bum rush their way into the open door that fits the max load of two individuals crossing over.

I don't think it should be a rule for men to open doors. They can if they want.

I do not expect doors to be opened for me and I don't wait for it. I don't want my door to be opened for me unless my arms are full. I open doors for people who have their arms full. And I will hold the door open behind me if someone is there, but I don't run up and open the door for someone of able-body. I don't care if people, regardless of gender, open the door for me, I am not wanting it nor waiting for it...it's not a big deal to me.

I appreciate it when a man opens a door for me. I don't expect it, but at the same time, I wouldn't date someone for long who wouldn't do this for me. It's a nicety and if I'm in a romantic relationship with someone, then there should be niceties flying back and forth all the time. That's part of romance, to me... not the opening of doors, specifically, but the free-flowing feeling of taking care of someone and someone taking care of me.

I appreciate it when a man opens a door for me. I don't expect it, but at the same time, I wouldn't date someone for long who wouldn't do this for me.
