View Full Version : Server Switch

Hello MoFos,

Well, as most of you probably saw/heard, we switched servers yesterday. The forums came back online this morning. We had some problems (a few of you may have seen intermitten "Forbidden" messages), but Rob, who owns the server, was incredibly helpful and diligent in tracking them down, and they should be gone by now.

More importantly, of course, is that you should all notice fewer errors of any kind (server, database, etc), and pages should load a lot quicker than they have in the last few months. If you're reading this, please do me a small favor and reply to let me know whether or not you you've yet noticed any change in reliability and load times. It's much quicker for me, but I'd like to know if others are experiencing the same jump in performance. I hope so. :)

Thanks for your patience over the past few months, and enjoy the new server!

Oh, also, there should be far more guests browsing the forum than usual. Shortly before we switched servers I removed the load limit from the forum, which may have been holding some guests back (members, I believe, are exempt from it). Upon deactivating it and moving to the new server, we saw an instant jump, from about 90-100 total users (members and guests combined) in the middle of the day, to 250 or 270. It's at 160+ as I write this. So in addition to being faster, MoFo should be more active from here on out. Especially with summer coming up. :)

In summary: yay.

Yup, everything seems a lot better so far. I can finally post in the shout box and the pages load a lot faster.

MoFo is so fast now that pages are loading before I've even clicked the link! Maybe that's just excitement clouding my judgement...

I'm not getting any email notification of posts in subscribed threads though - checked my profile options and everything seems fine there. ;)

I've noticed the sites got a lil' more pep in it's step, bruh. Solid migration. Those DB errors were a killer. As a sysadmin, I was thinking it was time for me to get down and start hacking up a stable server for you at one of my peoples colo's. Glad everything is live and in effect now.

There's a new deal. You have to shoot 50 i-pods to get each dot back.

My User page has been replaced by a far more streamlined, almost google-like page, incidently. It now says... "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: parse_username() in /home/movieforums/public_html/community/usercp.php on line 395"

I tried to parse. Really i did. (Actually that's a lie)

The page was there an hour ago tho. I'm fairly certain of that... ;)

Yeah, sorry about that. That was a very odd error. Still have no idea why it popped up, but that particular bug should be squashed by now. :) Let me know if you still get it after a hard refresh.

I'm still not getting email notification, the quick reply windows aren't showing and there's no link on my page at all for PMs. I was able to read your last one but exited the window before I replied. When I logged into mofo next time the PM link in the top right of the home page had disappeared and I couldn't get to it from the User panel - kept saying I didn't have access rights. :(

....now when I click reply to any topic it's telling me I don't have access rights so I can't even post. :(

A "hard refresh" is holding on Control and hitting F5. That usually sorts out cache problems, which is probably what it is, because I had the same problem, changed a line of code, and it worked. Let me know if that (and a cache cleansing, perhaps?) does the trick. :)

Tacitus was listed as "Awaiting Email Confirmation." Do you happen to know if he updated his email address lately? If so, he'd need to click on the link in the confirmation email sent to him to have normal access. Of course, I realize with the email thing, that may have been a problem, but in any event that's what was causing it. I just manually changed his status to "Registered," so he should be able to access everything now.

One last thing ... a pet peeve in all my years on MoFo: Is there some way to make sure that Box Office info is UP TO DATE every week? I can't imagine what visitors think who come here and see that box horribly out of date. I would think having the box office listings there, handy, in a very timely fashion (by Sunday afternoon when they come out) would be a draw for more people -- to come and check *here* for that info each week, instead of elsewhere.

But instead they come here and get a box office listing from weeks or months ago. It just irks me. If I can help personally, let me know, Yoda.

EDIT: If it's possible, having the site pull the box office results off of a RSS feed would most definitely keep it up to date. Good old http://www.movies.com has an RSS you could use. Just so long as their got credited for it there's nothing wrong in using their feed. Of course, it only gives the top five movies.

Email should be working now, too. If anyone else is having problems with notifications and the like, let me know.

As for the box office: it seems easy enough, but remembering it every week, and finding the time and effort to sit down and do it, is surprisingly challenging. If anyone would like to volunteer, I'd be glad to give them a shot at it. :)

If no one else wants the job, I'll do it. I'm usually fairly free on Sunday afternoons and could pencil this on my weekly to-do lists. If it's just the discipline of remembering to do it and gathering the info, bear in mind that I had to do this very thing when I did radio prep work with Graham in the late '90s. (Remember that?) Box office was a small part of that, but it was a part. You'd have to show me how to do it, but that's okay with me.

Let me know if no one else wants it.

One thing that is still the same for me is that I keep getting automatically logged out if I take a few minutes to type a longish post. I just lost a post and since my time is limited these days I won't try to re-type it. I was hoping wuth the new server this wouldn't be happening. Is it on my end? Do I need to do something different in my settings of my Internet Explorer?

Are you sure those aren't new posts in the same thread? Because that happens a lot.

If you're sure, then I would suggest hitting the "Mark All Forums Read" link when you're done, which is what I usually do. Lots of people, on this forum and others, have problems with posts being marked new...I think it's still a pretty inprecise feature. But marking all forums as read usually does the trick for me.

I'm getting this too, whenever I click the yellos 'forums' key at the top of the mofo pages, I get the sign-in boxes as if I'm looking at the forums while not signed in. If I click the "back" browser button, it signs me right back in, though. That might work for you, too.

Chris, I have two problems.

When I am logged in on MoFo and, for instance, want to go and check the shoutbox or the forum overview I almost always get logged off. But not for real, because if I leave the site I am still logged on when I return. And sometimes when this "log off" happens I can still post and so on, but often I have to log back on the forum.

The other problem is similar. When I log off I always get a message saying something like that I'm not really logged off and click here to be logged off. So I do that, but sometimes recently I've been logged on allready when I return to the site, even if I logged off "for real" the previous time.

Just thought you should know these things.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing a barage of pop-ups today?
I've always had a few pop-up ads, nothing too bad... but today the little buggers seem to be more aggressive than unusual. I've been here maybe 15 minutes and I've already clicked off 33 pop-up boxes.

Edit: Whatever was going on this morning seems to have calmed down. I can now click without my mouse spinning and spinning and three ads popping up at once. :)
