Basically, I'm in a Cover Band who've just got together. We've clubbed together for a PA and are trying out songs to see what kind of set we can get together.

I'm looking for suggestions on numbers you'd like to hear when you're out drinking in a pub. I'm not really looking for Radiohead type suggestions as I don't think they'd click well with the general loutish public. We're going for a Beatles-ish type rock band with a dash of modern tunes to get people dancing. In fact, getting the girls dancing is a prime objective!

Here's some numbers we do already...

01 - LUST FOR LIFE - IGGY POP
02 - TEENAGE KICKS - THE UNDERTONES
03 - MONEY - BEATLES
04 - TAKE YOUR MAMA - SCISSOR SISTERS
05 - DON'T LET ME DOWN - BEATLES
06 - BROWN EYED GIRL - VAN MORRISON
07 - SUPERSTITION - STEVIE WONDER
08 - I FEEL FINE - BEATLES
09 - TAKE ME OUT - FRANZ FERDINAND
10 - BALLAD OF JOHN & YOKO - BEATLES
11 - CHILDREN OF THE REV - T-REX
12 - LAST NITE - THE STROKES
13 - SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO - THE CLASH
14 - YOU CAN'T DO THAT - BEATLES
15 - SUB HOMESICK BLUES - BOB DYLAN
16 - TEENAGE DIRTBAG - WHEATUS
17 - TICKET TO RIDE - BEATLES
18 - I SAW HER STANDING THERE
19 - SUSPICIOUS MINDS - ELVIS
20 - BURNING LOVE - ELVIS
21 - ONE AFTER 909 - BEATLES
22 - YOU REALLY GOT ME - KINKS
23 - JUMPING JACK FLASH - ROLLING STONES
24 - SEX MACHINE - JAMES BROWN
25 - JOHNNY BE GOODE - CHUCK BERRY
26 - MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE - THE POLICE

So people, any ideas?

thanks....

You've got a solid bunch of crowd-pleasers there already.

Everything that's coming into my head is a bit too obscure or reggae-ish (just been playing along to Toots and the Maytals ;)).

Light My Fire ~ Doors

I thought of that one, but then figured it might put the girls off (or cause embarrassing requests for drugs in the toilets ;))

"House of the rising Sun", anything by Eric and the Animals :D

Some fantastic choices there peeps. I especially liked Pidds choices, they tie more in with stuff I like ;)

Cait, We've been thinking of doing 'Let's Dance' for a while now but don't know how to go about it without using a keyboard to play the synth parts.

Ok these are new ideas....

01 - Fell in love with a girl - white stripes
02 - Parklife - blur
03 - Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf

04 - This Charming Man - The Smiths

I love that song. It was my first Smiths choice but then I thought it might be harder to pull off than for instance "Bigmouth". I played it on a wedding (the original) and people danced like hell to it.

I was thinking it could be hard to pull of but it's probably the most well known out of the Smiths catalogue, well apart from 'Panic'.

It's just a bass and guitar combo. I think I know the riff already.

*mini runs for guitar and plays the munsters theme instead*

Hey, what about "First of the Gang to Die" with Moz? That's a knock out!

Strummer521
01-25-06, 08:32 PM
"Blinded by the Light" - Bruce Springsteen
"Heartbreaker" > "Livin' Lovin' Maid" - Led Zeppelin
"I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" - The Ramones (one for the girls maybe. It's sweet without an ounce of irony.)
"Under Pressure" - David Bowie
"Judy Is A Punk" - The Ramones
"Friday I'm In Love" - The Cure
"Stray Cat Blues" - The Rolling Stones
"Young Americans" - David Bowie
"Revolution Rock" - The Clash
"Jailhouse" - Sublime
"Santeria" - Sublime
"There is a Light That Never Goes Out" - The Smiths
"Sweet Jane" - The Velvet Underground

Hey, what about "First of the Gang to Die" with Moz? That's a knock out!

Yeah, that'sa fantastic track! Great album too. I don't know if the rest of the band would agree though.

Strummer, 'Under Pressure' is good idea!

She Bangs The Drums - Stone Roses

Ah good idea, I was thinking 'Fools Gold' or 'I am the Resurrection' for the stones track.

I'd love to do 'Geno' but we're only using guitars!

Ah good idea, I was thinking 'Fools Gold' or 'I am the Resurrection' for the stones track.

I'd love to hear someone doing the 9 minute version of Fool's Gold, one of the few records that makes me feel like dancin' (not Ted).

I'd love to do 'Geno' but we're only using guitars!

Hehe, I thought after I posted that Geno would be a bit useless without a full horns section (or a keyboard, which we used to use for the Aldi version). ;)

If you do Teenage Kicks, what about Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer or My Perfect Cousin? :)

"In Between Days" - The Cure
"Just Like Heaven" - The Cure
"Marquee Moon" - Television (Good luck to the drummer ;D )
"1969" - The Stooges
"I Wanna Be Your Dog" - The Stooges
"Down On the Street" - The Stooges
"Jailbreak" - Thin Lizzy
"Song 2" - Blur
"Coffee and TV" - Blur
"Here Comes Your Man" - The Pixies

""Marquee Moon" - Television (Good luck to the drummer ;D )

That'd be a great one for developing chemistry within the band. Everything has to be so tight. Especially the intertwining rythym of the guitars.

MyRobotSuit

It would be fantastic, I love that song but I don't think it'll work. We're playing in pubs on Matthew Street so we're after some quick numbers. Marquee Moon lasts for quite an age!

Think 'Brown Eyed Girl' type songs....

Oh and Pidd, our drummer is fantastic, you should hear him on the Police songs!

You guys are probably one of the better cover bands of this type of music that I've ever heard!!!!

I definately think Bigmouth by the Smiths and maybe Still Ill

Also maybe try Hounds of Love - kate Bush/the futureheads

it might be a lil out there for pub music but give it a try and you might be pleasantly surprised

Fountain of Salmacis - Genesis

Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2

I heard a covers band doing Shine on you crazy Diamond (superb) and they did it absolute justice too!

Atom Bomb - Fluke
Suppers Ready - Genesis (good luck to the drummer in the apocalypse 9/8 although if they pull that off the effect would be incredible)

Oasis - Little by little or Stop crying your heart out

Blur - Song 2

Talking Heads, well anything by them really, all good!
