Quick question. I've been hearing stories about how the Red Cross keeps like x % of all their donations. I guess I can accept that. The thing that bothers me is that people are coming up with insane numbers, such as 50, 60, etc. Is this true?
I've been searching on google and every time I search, I can't seem to find the approriate words to put into the engine. I tried Snopes and they gave me something else about the Red Cross.
Thanks, yo nizzle dizzle!

That sucks! After all my tax-deductible donations to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina victims, Hurricane Rita victims and earthquake victims, it isn't good to hear that they might be keeping 50 or 60% for themselves! Overhead can't be that expensive, surely! If it is, they need to reorganize.

I know that here in Sweden help organizations like Red Cross and such may keep up to 20% (I think it is) of their income for administrative costs and to keep things rolling, so to speak. They are being watched carefully so I would think that at least here in Sweden it would be hard to take 50-60% of the money for themselves. The swedish section of Amnesty International actually have been told to watch it since I think they used around 21-22% of the income from 2005 to administrative costs and so on, something that they publically had to apologize for and promise they would take care of the upcoming year.
I think that if you heard a rumour like that about the Red Cross and it's true, we all will be hearing about it very soon.
The Red cross here also publicly apologized here for using too much for admin, they now only use 20% also. :yup:

Godsend, I seem to remember a percentage closer to what Nebs and Piddy said the Aussie and Swedish Chapters keep… but you might check out Urban Legends to see if they have anything pertaining to the stories you are hearing…
Personally, even though I am extremely grateful for everything they have done after Katrina, I think the Red Cross is in the same boat as Fema and need to do a complete overhaul of their organization…
