I enjoyed reading A Dame To Kill For and Batman: Year One, and have recently been reading various Hellboy and Conan comics. But I want to find a decent comic that hasn't been made into a film yet.
So what are your favorite comic books that haven't been turned into films?

Have you read V For Vendetta, Sleezy? Would you say it's worth reading before the film comes out?

As you can probably tell, I haven't read a comic in some years... :)
Rogue Trooper, ABC Warriors, Halo Jones, Strontium Dog, Ro-Jaws & Hammerstein etc etc etc. I'll overlook the Judge Dredd film, if I may.
Heheh. I'm in the same boat. Dipped in and out of 2000AD when i was a kiddling (and the Transformers mags aswell, to my shame ;)). Haven't read nigh on anything 'graphic novely' since.
You reminded me of this Aeon-Flux stylee 80s classic that i loved tho. The ludicrously named... Machine Man (http://www.damianobrigo.it/machine.htm).

Erm, it's in Italian there, but it was dead nostalgic reading the synopsis. It had some decent dystopian dabblings, mixed with grimey optimism. Meliked :).

Preacher is probably my favourite comic series ever, it's so messed up and hilarious, but I would also say check out the original Authority series. All of the ones by Warren Ellis or Mark Millar, then after that, stop, cause DC comics totally ruined that series later on. Then read every issue of The Ultimates, which is a Marvel comic, but it's also the most twisted thing I think I've ever read, a scathing political satire on the past 5 years in the form of a super-hero comic.
Oh, and do yourself a huge favour and read Batman: the Dark Knight Returns. Best Batman comic EVER.

I got bought my first copy in the late 70s (can remember Starlord too vaguely) but was far too young to appreciate anything more than Talking robots!!! and Huge guns!!!. I started to get into 2000AD a lot more in the early 80s and didn't miss a prog for 7 or 8 years when rock music and girls began to inhabit a higher shelf in my conciousness.
My prized Prog 500 got lost along the way but I've got the 1980 & 81 annuals in the loft. ;)

Here's a good collection of nine-panel gag strips I found myself strangely drawn to today:

here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1560976306/ref=sib_dp_pt/102-9169339-1306551#reader-page) is a sample.
To anyone who likes true story murder mysteries, I'd recommend Torso, by Brian Michael Bendis.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Miscellaneous/bendis_andreyko_torso.jpg
It tells the story of Eliot Ness' hunt for the "Torso" killer in 1930's Cleveland. He was obviously already known as the man who put Al Capone away, but he faced some harsh scrutiny with this serial murder case (and almost lost everything). Thrilling read, and a very dynamic black-and-white visual style. Check it out.

Eh, my favorite RAW book was
http://www.garypanter.com/work_comics_images/05_1shot_comic.jpg
Printed on big hunks of cardboard. Now that's a raw comic!
Just think of all the forgotten forerunners to these modern classics tho. The ones that no-one cherishes anymore... the ones that went that extra mile to explore...
...racism (http://www.misterkitty.org/extras/stupidcovers/loisbl.jpg)...
...sexual exploration (http://www.misterkitty.org/extras/stupidcovers/sab2.jpg)...
...colour-blindness (http://www.misterkitty.org/extras/stupidcovers/unexpected.jpg)...
...and even...
...moon-headedness (http://www.misterkitty.org/extras/stupidcovers/moon1.jpg)...
WATCHMEN
Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons
By the way, you mentioned in another thread the Absolute Watchmen (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1401207138/qid=1136518334/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-3000076-7636723?s=books&v=glance&n=283155) being a "must-own" for fans of the book. Well, I recently shucked out the cash and bought it, and boy am I glad I did. The huge hardcover collector's book is incredible, with the traditional parchment paper and tons of extras I'm still reading through. Really impressive. While I wouldn't recommend it to someone who hasn't read Watchmen (because sitting with this huge, heavy book in your lap could become a chore), I MUST recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Watchmen enough to own. :yup:

Atomic Robo
Project Superpowers
Warlord of Mars (only one issue so far, so they could still screw it up)

New from Dynamite. First issue is out now for only $1.00. They're doing a 2 issue "prelude" story, then an adaptation of "A Princess of Mars." Written by Arvid Nelson with art by Stephen Sadowski. Each issue has like 4 covers, but Joe Jusko is doing the best cover work, IMO. Here's his cover for #1...

Also wasn't Dynamite supposed to start publishing Phantom comics, was really eager to see what they do with it. Didn't care much for Moonstone's take on Phantom.

They are currently publishing a series titled "The Last Phantom." It's set in the jungle and the Phantom costume is composed of some kind of berry juice. I haven't read it myself, but I've seen mixed reviews of it.

There can never be enough of the "Death of _____" Scenarios in comics..
MadMikeyD
12-14-10, 02:35 PM
Well, with about a 60 year time span between the two, the odds of Zorro still being alive are pretty slim.
genesis_pig
12-14-10, 02:37 PM
Could be Zorro's descendant, that's not a new concept.
MadMikeyD
12-14-10, 02:40 PM
Could be. Sounds like the premise involves the Lone Ranger investigating the events of Zorro's death, though. One story told over a span of years involving the two characters rather than a direct team-up/crossover. Regardless, I'm just glad there's more Lone Ranger comics on the way since the regular series is ending next month.

I have left Dynamite's Zorro & Lone Ranger halfway.
It's been a long time I haven't read any comics.
Anyway I am glad they're experimenting with this.. I have to pick up the new Phantom as well..
Sometimes I wonder, will this lifetime be enough to experience all this goodness.

Ok, so i'm trying to brush up my comic knowledge with some of the more seminal stories. I've obviously got Watchmen, some guilty Army of Darkness vs Marvel Zombies, Ash Saves Obama, Freddy vs Jason vs Ash etc. Then recently got some Batman classics (so i've heard) - Year One, Dark Knight Strikes Again, Long Halloween, Knightfall Part 1 + Part 2. I want to get into Walking Dead which seems quite daunting (and expensive) at this point, some Sandman, Preacher etc or other classics.
What would you recommend reading, though without much prior reading of the original sources?

am reading Runaways
The teens who became the Runaways found that some family secrets are bigger than others when they witnessed their parents, part of a cabal known as the Pride, murdering a young girl during a secret sacrificial ritual. Running away from their homes, the group banded together and began a journey of discovery, both of their parents' origins and of their own inherited powers. Arsenic found she could control her time-traveling parents' dinosaur, which she named Old Lace; Sister Grimm took her mother's magical Staff of One, with which she could cast any spell, but only once; the mutant Bruiser found that with puberty came super strength; Lucy in the Sky learned that she was an alien with energy powers; Talkback took several of his mad scientist parents' weapons; however, Alex Wilder, possessing only his own natural genius, retained use of his real name.
Forced to fight their parents at various points, the group was even framed for the murder of the girl whom they had earlier witnessed their parents sacrificing. Taking an old abandoned mansion which they called the Hostel as their new home, the Runaways set about clearing their name. Breaking up a robbery, the group welcomed a new member, a teen named Topher who claimed his parents forced him to help them with their crimes. Topher, in actuality a vampire born at the turn of the 20th century, set about seducing both Sister Grimm and Lucy in the Sky, but was killed when he attempted to drink Lucy's solar-irradiated alien blood. The Pride then exposed his followers to sunlight, killing them as well.
Using their more legitimate connections the Pride convinced Cloak and Dagger to come to California and collect their kids. After a misunderstanding, most of the Runaways ended up inside of Cloak's cloak dimension, leaving only Bruiser and Arsenic to rescue them. Upon explaining their situation, the Runaways convinced Cloak and Dagger of their innocence, and the duo promised to call Captain America to help them, although their memories were erased by the Pride before they could do so. The discovery of the Hostel by the police, whom the Pride had in their pocket, forced the Runaways to take the battle to their parents once more.
Nico Minoru aka Sister Grimm
Discovering their parents served ancient beings known as the Gibborim who intended to re-create the Earth using the Pride as their catalysts and repopulators, the Runaways found the location where the Pride intended to sacrifice the soul of the girl they had murdered. Confronting their parents, the Runaways were shocked when Alex Wilder revealed his alliance with the Pride. Despite the defection, the Runaways were able to free the young girl's soul, causing the Gibborim to attack and apparently slay Alex and the Pride. Narrowly escaping, the group met Captain America, who had them placed in foster homes and orphanages; Bruiser was enrolled at the Xavier Institute.
Missing each other, the group again ran away and agreed to stay together as Runaways. Rescuing Arsenic's dinosaur, Old Lace, and taking Talkback's parents' giant vehicle, the Leapfrog, the group set out, determined to make something more of their new family.
With the death of the Pride, Los Angeles' 'protected' status was ended, and super-villains began flock to the unprotected city. With no one else to do the job, the Runaways returned to L.A. to protect it. They have fought Swarm, the Wrecking Crew, and, perhaps in their biggest struggle to date, a new Pride formed of Alex Wilder's online friends, led by a resurrected Geoffrey Wilder.
