I ask because I am an avid fan of the Hitman games, and there is a 4th Hitman game coming out. From the previews I saw, it promises to be at least as good as the 1st 3. AND - the music seems to be just as poignant. :D

Of every game (and I DO mean every) Ive played, the one I found the most intriguing has been Hitman - due in large part to the music. Far as Im concerned, the music could be movie-scale. I think they sell themselve short confining themselves to games. These guys have impressive imaginations: and arent afraid to get cliche with theme:

Here is a snippet (http://www.jesperkyd.com/projects/hitman2.html) of info:
The Hitman 2 score was performed by 110 musicians from the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and Choir and mixed & edited in Denmark at Copenhagen studio "RadioHusets Concert Hall".

The Hitman 2 score reflects different cultures from countries visited throughout the game. Kyd wrote in many different musical scales for each of the different countries. These countries include, Russia, Japan, India, Middle East and Sicily.

For Hitman 2 Kyd wrote action & heroic orchestral music, as well as ambient and electronic tracks.

A few of my favorites are: (the clips may'nt be for dailup - sorry! :D)
Assassin Main Title (http://www.jesperkyd.com/music_clips/hitman2/hs-maintitle.mp3);
Sicily Slow (http://www.jesperkyd.com/music_clips/hitman2/h2-sicilyslow.mp3);
Contracts Main Title (http://www.jesperkyd.com/music_clips/hitmancontracts/HC_Contracts_Main_Title.mp3).

Now I want to play all the other games they composed for! :p

(you can see the "movie" portion was more of an afterthought, which is why I posted this here: please somebody move it to the right forum if I screwed this up! Thanks! :D)

I was addicted to the original Metroid. And I think part of it was the music(?), sound or whatever that was that I heard throughout the game. Music is a BIG part of games and movies.

It seems like most great movies have a great soundtrack.

Funny thing is, I can't enjoy a game anymore unless it has an amazing soundtrack. Metal Gear Solid series first pops into my head when it comes to music. It's plain riverting and I always get the soundtracks for the games. If it wasn't for Harry Gregson-Williams, I wouldn't enjoy the games as much as I do. Hideo Kojima still is the man though, amazing writer when it comes to the stories.

there is a definite connection between music and the game/movie. We all know that John Williams and those folks have changed movies entirely, and the Jaws, or Lord of the Rings wouldn't be the same without music. but also, whenever I play music from Metroid, or Sonic, I retrogress into my earlier years. The music brings back the memories of all those times.

Yes, when I hear any of the music from FF:VII I have a specific memory. A huge ice storm during my Christmas Break in the 3rd grade. I had just gotten the game that Christmas and everyday I would wake up to sit down and play FF:VII. Taking bathroom breaks, lunch breaks, and snow breaks. :) One of the best times of my childhood, I'll never forget it.

I was extremely addicted to Metroid... and can still play the sounds/music in my head... My brother played Mortal Combat so much I remember having nightmares to the music in it... :D

Anyway, I agree, music is a big part of games and movies... and I think the right or wrong combination can make or break either.

So then: can anyone describe an example of music "breaking" a movie/game?

Those Dynasty Warriors games, for some reason, use really bad generic 80's hair metal.

Hear, hear. Also bad oriental "me so horny" mixed in with the metal.

And if you want truly beautiful videogame score that hits all the right notes, I have two words for you: Nobuo Uematsu.

The man is a legend.

Music is such an emotive force in its own right. Music has its own story. Used with film, I believe it can help to evoke or intensify the mood of a scene/story.

Some scenes I have watched in films have sent chills down my spine with the aid of music. Without, the scene would have had a missing component.

Great use of music in film:

"Young Americans" - David Bowie (Dogville)

"Paint it Black" - The Rolling Stones (Full Metal Jacket)

I've just started playing Final Fantasy VII and the repetitive Junon music is giving me a headache.

it's the hardest part of the game, I just throw on some papa roach, or Linkin park and mute the game till it's over
