If this sinks to the bottom of the forum graveyard I'll know that this isn't an important thread to have, but I might as well give it a go.
10. Crazy Taxi
http://www.tcp.com/~prisoner/taxi/Crazy%20Taxi%20US%20Cover%20-%20Front.jpg
Easy to get into, and easy to play (but challenging) this game is the ultimate pot smoking fiesta. Beach Boy's punk music, a selection of apathetic taxi drivers, and cool slogans, this is one of the best times to be had by any game. Simply because it is gameplay, nothing more and nothing less.
9. Twisted Metal: Black
http://students.washington.edu/lum/images/games_page/PS2/covers/twisted_metal_black.jpg
Besides having the coolest song ever in it (rolling stones: paint it black), this has one of the best story driven plots in all of existence. You see, people must be in cars in teh future, and they must kill each other with rockets and special attacks. Easily the most brilliant idea ever created, and it works so well. You pick your car and you go out and you try to destroy other cars, while picking up rockets, napalm, homing missiles, turbo, etc.. It is a mix between racing and fighting. But, this is a sequel, so it's not an original idea, what makes this game great though is it's storyline, told through cgi flashbacks that demonstrate a person's previous life and how they got to be so ****ed up. The levels are spectacular, the gameplay is spectacular, the story is spectacular. Easily an awesome game.
8. NBA Hangtime
This game has alot in common with crazy taxi, not the gameplay, which is totally different. But the style of gameplay, easy to get into, supported by great music, and most importantly, plain fun. NBA hangtime for the sega genesis is all of this, and more. It is arcade action at it's finest. If I had to reccomend one sports game to you, it would be this one, it captures what a sport should be, and that is simply, fun.
7. Duke Nukem 3D
http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/941527980-00.jpg
Hell yes. Buzzcut macho man vs. aliens with strippers. Nuff said.
6. Sonic Adventure
http://www.ebgames.com/ebx_assets/product_images/163414.jpg
This is a sequel that I believe built upon the great series in every way imagined. You have levels in between of levels which allow for exploration and messing around, and the levels you do play are filled with sonic's best 3d speed out to date. Also, other characters such as tails, knuckles, amy, big the cat, and gamma are available for utilzation. Which makes the game alot deeper than just some sonic game. My favorite non genesis sonic.
5. Final Fantasy VII
http://xenon.stanford.edu/~geksiong/papers/sts145/Squaresoft%20and%20FF7_files/image003.gif
Before you call me a sellout, hear my cry. I bought this game by accident, as I whole heartedly intended to start my final fantasy journey with 8. But, some jerk took it from me and I was left with 7. Much like the "It's a wonderful life" story, magic that was not supposed to happen did, and as a result, I played one of my favorite rpgs. First and foremost, the setting and story grasp me, my favorite in any final fantasy, these are the strong points. The gamplay isn't really special, except for knights of the round, which is my favorite summon in final fantasy history. The cast of characters is also the best ever, barret, tifa, aeris (cries), red XIII, all spectacular characters, also the best in ff. I love this game so much.
4. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
http://covers.games.img.compricer.com/2/122.png
Wow, what an experience, the first truly open ended world to explore. Do what you want, MAKE what you want, a sandbox full of stories and imagination. If you haven't played this game I would recommend it, it is one of the deepest experiences....... ever. This is what got me introduced to mods, and it opens up doors when we talk about what exactly a videogame is.
3. No one lives Forever
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004ZASP.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
How I wish Cate Archer was married to me does not pertain to how great of a game this is. This is like an exploitation of the 60s spy genre, except with more action and less annoying austin powers references. The weapons you use, hillarious. The dialogue that is said, hillarious. The settings, even more hillarious. This movie is filled with chuckles and hee haws, but most importantly it is filled with gameplay that balances suspense/action/stealth perfectly.
2. ***TIE***
Grand Theft Auto 3
http://pages.infinit.net/toocool/grand_theft_auto_3.jpg
Call of Duty
http://sosimple.co.za/simple/images/CALL-OF-DUTY.jpg
Twisted Metal 2
http://www.megghy.com/immagini/Psx/FICHE%20T/COVERS/Twister%20metal%202.jpg
Now, why 3 games in one spot? Because they all present the best of what I think of in gaming. Grand theft auto 3 represents story driven openness, call of duty represents cinematic and scripted action, and twisted metal 2 represents epicness and co-op gameplay.
Grand Theft Auto 3 brilliantly orchestrates a world, where it's not just italians vs. the police, or the yakuza vs. the hispanics, it is all these stories, and you are just a player. While you certainly can't control the story elements yet, you can tell this is the direction they want to go to in the future. And with all the extra curricular activities, this game's depth is unrivaled. Awesome masterpiece, which is exactly what it is.
Call of Duty may be the polar opposite, it is only done by paths, and it is full of cliches for it's audience. That being said, everything is done perfectly. The voice acting, scripted destruction, and furious nazi killing rampage all make everything worthwhile. The best part is that you get send nazis to hell NOT just as Americans NOT just as British but ALSO as the Russians. Excellent production.
Twisted Metal 2 is the prequel to black. It is also the sequel to the original idea. So, what makes this game the best is it's flawless execution of the idea. Destruction, fighting, it all goes into the game. The coop part is the best, working with a friend and discovering what happens on the various levels (those who have played, remember the paris level? hell yes!) is so exciting I literally I had to stop playing for fear of seeing the characters in my sleep. Such a great game. However, time has ruined the controls, analogue really made movement alot easy on the gaming population, and thusly, this game loses some of it's luster. But, this game is one of the best of all time.
The Greatest videogame of all time:
Sonic the Hedgehog
http://www.consolepassion.co.uk/images/reviews/sonic-the-hedgehog/sonic1.JPG
First videogame played, first fight got into (damn mario noobs), first game cried over, first anything. This was my first time at just about everything related to videogames. Sonic the Hedgehog was my translator of this virtual world. It was absolutely fantastic. Sonic's speed, his nonchalantness but still willingness to save animals, all great qualities that I still admire to this day. Dr. Robotnik (eggman is a noob term) and his nefarious inventions still haunt me. Faster than Mario, cooler than Crash, and made by Sega, this is the best videogame of all time.
Well that's my list, I hope my lack of attention to details, unwillingness to use correct grammar, and the general lack of thought I put into this list didn't hurt anyone in an overly dramatic way. But, these are my games, games that I can play over and over again, games that I grew up with (some are pretty ****ed up, samsonite delilah take note), and games that I still defend to this day as the best ever.
Please, post your opinions and your own lists or whatever suits you. Or let this thread sink if it's not worthy. Whatever the case, this is my list, and I'm sticking to it.

I would have put FFVII at number one. Holy crap just plain amazing. Changed video games as we know it. I also would have slapped Metal Gear Solid for the PS on that list along with Goldeneye for the N64. Other then that I'd have to agree with that list.

Obi, how come you have twelve spots on your top ten list?

Obi, how come you have twelve spots on your top ten list?
Because I wrote down my original list and then remembered call of duty and grand theft auto 3.
Also, guage it in importance. These aren't all perfect games, the only game I think is perfect is sonic the hedgehog. So, it should be top ten in terms of quality of the best ever. if that makes sense.
Tie for second, that's all I gotta say.
I'm curious as to how Call of Duty 2, which is nothing but improvements, doesn't beat out Call of Duty?

What about great games like the Legend Of Zelda series or even the new Halo games. But I agree Final Fantasy needs to be like Number 1.

I'm curious as to how Call of Duty 2, which is nothing but improvements, doesn't beat out Call of Duty?Because, just like Halo did for Sci-fi, Call of Duty was the turn around for WWII shooters. So the squel, which just added weapons, graphics, and levels shouldn't really be considered seeing how it's all ready been done.

I'm curious as to how Call of Duty 2, which is nothing but improvements, doesn't beat out Call of Duty?
Are you kidding me? Call of Duty 2 was a carbon copy of ideas from call of duty. The new physics I don't even prefer.
Every single player level with the hill 400 exception was cliche ridden and boring. I predicted the storyline to each one of them, and it was sad as my cap'n desperately tried explain them.
Infinity Ward didn't take the time to make better AI, multi layered paths (what they have in there is NOT multi layered, merely an unimportant gimmick), or anything really special. The D-Day level is the worst level I've played in my life.
The guns/health system are interesting, and after I got over the big changes from cod 1 to cod 2 I ended up liking some of the changes and not liking some of the changes. IN terms of the health system and weapons I would say cod 2 and cod 1 are on par with each other. Different, but useable in their own methods.
The Single player in COD wasn't just the first, it was fun and exciting. Those levels with cod 2 graphics would kill cod 2 in a heartbeat, it's better on every level. It's not that cod 1 did it first, cod 1 did it better, cod 1 is a BETTER game than cod 2, end of discussion.
Also, the UO multiplayer beats out the maps in cod 2. Although the maps in cod 2 mp are better than cod 1 mp.
What about great games like the Legend Of Zelda series or even the new Halo games. But I agree Final Fantasy needs to be like Number 1.
I hate Zelda and I hate Halo. Zelda isn't my game type, but I can vouch for Halo being a lousy game. From a single player perspective it was repetitive level design and some uninspired weapons. From the multiplayer perspective it must've been fun for those who never played pc multiplayer before, but for me, it was alot of the same.
So, I respect Zelda, but I don't respect Halo. And I don't like either game series.

TOP 10 GAMES OF ALL-TIME
These easily have to be my top 10...
10. Grand Theft Auto III
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/37935000/jpg/_37935168_violentgame6.jpg
The most revolutionary GTA game ever, it also had the baddest city on earth for a devil's playground. Speed, kill, break, destroy, steal and maybe even follow the story. It's all yours.
9. Half-Life
http://www.hispazone.com/imagenes/tutoriales/half-life/1-1.jpg
Perhaps the most revolutionary shooter since Doom, easily one of the greatest. Compelling adventure and for gamers with intelligence. FPS should be a lot more like this.
8. Doom
http://images.linspire.com/applications/3373/48/blurb-doom.png
The "Star Wars" of first-person shooters. Simplistic action game with plenty of gibbitude for everybody. A pinnacle of gaming.
7. Commander Keen
http://jstownsley.com/images/keen.png
One of the first videogames I ever played, it quickly became a lifelong favourite. A kids game through and through, but still pretty fun for one. And you could play Pong!
6. Metal Gear Solid
http://www.ilmac.net/immagini/recensioni/programmi/virtualgamestation/metalgearsolid.jpg
Tactical espionage action - just like it says on the package. Innovative, well-executed and near-perfect. Totally brilliant.
5. Perfect Dark
http://www.ebgames.com/ebx_assets/product_images/162702.jpg
My favourite N64 game. The name says it all - perfect. And dark. Action, stealth, multiplayer. PD had it all.
4. Super Mario Bros 3
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/ee/SMB3Cartoon.jpg/320px-SMB3Cartoon.jpg
The greatest Mario game ever invented. Even thought Super Mario 64 was arguably better, this was my favourite. Mario never wears raccoon ears any more and there's plenty of that in here. Nintendo brilliance.
3. Deus Ex
http://www.greatpost.com/image/cutebid/Deus%20Ex.jpg[/img
A shining example of non-linearity in a game. Part-FPS, part-RPG, part-strategy, all-action. Absorbing plot, simple yet compelling action, high levels of replayability. Easily a defining moment in gaming.
2. Tetris
[img]http://www.muellerr.ch/programming/tetris/tetris.jpg
A game that can still be accessible, let alone addictive, 20 years after its first inception deserves all the kudos it can get. Tetris is simple, easy, and most importantly, FUN. Anyone can play it.
1. Sonic the Hedgehog
http://www.consolepassion.co.uk/images/reviews/sonic-the-hedgehog/sonic1.JPG
I have to admit, I love this game too. Fast, frenetic, colourful and ingenious. A miracle of a platformer.
Here's my list:
10. Grand Theft Auto III
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/10grandtheftauto3.jpg
Despite being one of the most controversial games ever released, Grand Theft Auto III revolutionized open-ended gameplay for the contemporary game market.
9. Resident Evil
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/9residentevil.jpg
When it was released, Resident Evil served as THE single anchor for the fledgling horror game market. People didn't play horror games until this showed us that they could be just as scary (if not scarier) than film.
8. Age of Empires
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/8ageofempires.jpg
As far as real-time strategy games go, Age of Empires marked the real genesis for what the genre has become today. It surpassed the numbers games before it, and gave players a fast-paced and intelligent experience. It also helped foster the multiplayer movement that has become a staple in nearly every game genre there is.
7. Metal Gear Solid
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/6metalgearsolid.jpg
Metal Gear Solid revolutionized the platform genre, and gave players a new (and brilliantly realized) "stealth" gameplay mechanic. Suddenly, players could decide for themselves whether to fight, or to sneak and evade. It's also known for some of the first really impressive musical scores ever included in a video game (which pushed the concept of the "cinematic" video game experience).
6. Halo: Combat Evolved
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/7halo.jpg
Halo really is the evolution of first-person shooters. Never before has strategy, teamwork, and tactics played such a key role in a first-person experience. The enemies in Halo aren't just good - they move, act, coordinate, and fight like real combatants would. They aren't scripted - they make intelligent decisions based on battlefield conditions, and they challenge you to do the same (or die). Beyond that, Halo possesses the most fluid and intuitive control scheme for any first-person shooter ever.
5. Final Fantasy III
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/5finalfantasyiii.jpg
I would include Final Fantasy VII as well, because I think both are the pinnacles of the role-playing genre. But Final Fantasy III, even with sprite graphics (which were still incredible at the time of its release) pioneered the depth and complexity that would eventually become commonplace in RPGs. And there is something to be said about its ability to tell an emotional story with emotionally distant graphics/music.
4. Sim City
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/4simcity.jpg
This game invented the concept of open-ended gameplay. Obviously, the goal of the game was to maintain a prosperous city; but for its time, the depth and replay value are astonishing. And it has since spawned an entire legion of simulation games - from sports games to flight simulators and beyond.
3. Doom
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/3doom.jpg
When this game came out, it completely changed the direction of video games. Suddenly, interactivity in three-dimensions was possible, and the action that it brought with it was fast, intense, terrifying, and ultimately cathartic. With its three dimensions and violence, it made our nightmares come true.
2. Super Mario 3
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/2mario.jpg
Super Mario Bros. didn't create the platform genre, but it grounded it forever in the video game market. It also gave video games a face, thrusting them into an ocean of popularity. As video gamers, we owe Mario just about everything. And Super Mario 3 is a reflection of a concept created, revised, and finally realized as the solid medium that it inevitably became.
And finally:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/1zelda.jpg
Video games are all about excapism - adventure, skill, and personal achievement. The Legend of Zelda is the very definition of video games in practice. It is escapism at its very best, putting you in the shoes of a small person living in a large fantasy world, and giving you the responsibility of overcoming - through exploration, practice, and development of your own skills - seemingly insurmountable odds. And there is no finer example of a complete video game experience than The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Every aspect of this game is well-conceived and well-executed, and it works as an engaging and rewarding experience on every level. Ocarina is adventurous, cinematic, emotional, challenging, and closer to perfect than any other game on the shelf.

This'll probably show my age, but here goes... :)
10. Pyjamarama (Spectrum, 1984)
http://www.nvg.ntnu.no/sinclair/images/pyjamarama.gif
9. The Great Escape (Spectrum, 1986)
http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/original/1127054319-00.png
Non-linear, isometric take on any number of WWII escape movies.
8. Arcanum (PC, 2000)
http://www.armchairempire.com/images/Reviews/pc/arcanum/arcanum4.jpg
Some of the best depth and character development that I've ever seen in an RPG. I'd place this above Troika's more celebrated Fallout series, pity the graphics are a bit rubbish. I'd love to have seen it with the Morrowind or even Neverwinter Nights graphic engine...
7. Final Fantasy VIII (PS1, 1999)
http://www.gametective.de/images/screenshots/ff8_finalfantasy81.jpg
Nearly as good as FF VII. And nearly means that it's pretty darn good.
6. Sensible Soccer (Sega Megadrive, 1993)
http://www.juegomania.org/Sensible%2BSoccer%2B(Europa)/fotos/genesis/0/640/Foto%2BSensible%2BSoccer%2B(Europa).jpg
Insanely addictive multiplayer footie game. Pity the PC remake a few years back wasn't up to it.
5. The Football Manager series (PC)
http://www.ic-games.co.uk/images/screenshots/3038/screenshots/7.jpg
Quite simply, the only game I still play. As an RPG....well, you need to like football. :)
4. Resident Evil (PS1, 1996)
http://www.flashzombies.com/reviews/rez3.jpg
Cinematic. ;)
3. Final Fantasy VII (PS1 1997)
http://www.gametective.de/images/screenshots/ff7_2.jpg
There are deeper RPGs, there are better looking RPGs and there are more complex RPGs. There aren't any with such a sense of story though, so much so that I've just bought an original PS1 copy again (which is as rare as hen's teeth).
2. Tomb Raider (PS1, 1996)
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/games/coverg/33/611833.jpg
It might look a bit blocky thesedays and the camera seems to get stuck up Lara's nose at totally the wrong moment.....but I love it.
1. Elite (1984, BBC + loads of other platforms over the years)
http://mstancevic.tripod.com/Elite/images/Elite_AtariST.gif
Truely a game where you could, more or less, do what you wanted. Space trading, piracy, bounty hunting, mining, salvage, slave running, drug smuggling etc etc etc. All in 3D, wireframe at the time but I saved up far an Atari ST purely to play Elite with rather more accomplished graphics.

I agree with all these, especially the number pick for sonic the hedgehog (rock on brother).
But I must disagree with every nintendo choice except for super mario bros.
Like I said, I simply don' tlike Zelda's style, and perfect dark CD ruined it amongst many other things such as a story that i couldn't get into and weapons that I didn't like. I would much rather prefer goldeneye.
Just my opinions, however, and the deus ex choice is fantastibuluous, love that game, but it gets old after a while and the multiplayer sucks.

But remember, this thread is asking for "Top Ten Video Games Of All Time," not for favorites. I don't particularly care for Sim City myself, but I can't deny the effect it had on video games (and that's why it's on my list). My Top Ten Favorites list would look much different.

I haven't played a lot of video and pc games, but here's a list anyway... and it's definately my favourites and nothing else.
10. Decathlon (on Commodore 64)
9. Bust a Move (not the dance game)
8. Alundra
7. Silent Hill II
6. Broken Sword II
5. NHL 98 (EA Sports... and it rocked)
4. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
3. Pro Evolution Soccer (the second one, I think...)
2. Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis
1. Quake

Hmmm, I definetly need to reword things.
I should've said YOUR top ten videogames of all time.
I would've had to put the sims and zelda and donkey kong and castle wolfenstein and unreal tournament and everything I hate about games in my list had I not posted my favorites.
I apologize, edits coming.
Please post YOUR favorites, not what some jerk from Gamepro wants.

In that case, there is already a thread for that (the link has been posted above). If you want to post your favorites, you should probably post it there. That's certainly where you'll find mine.

well heres my list.
10)http://www.christiananswers.net/spotlight/games/2000/thesims3.jpg
The Sims(PC)
Whole lotta depth into this very great and creative title. While living life in a game may sound boring it definitly isn't with having to raise children to worrying about a career this game and alot more is just great all around.
9)http://www.megghy.com/immagini/Psx/FICHE%20T/COVERS/Twister%20metal%202.jpg
Twisted Metal II(playstation)
imroves on the original in almost everyway. better graphics, better car, better stories and better controles also with the addition of co-op its just a blast to play and even with the last two awesome twisted metal games(Black and Head on) this will never get old.

Super Mario World(Super Nintendo)
one of the first games I have memories of playing. my older brothers got Super Nintendo and this came with it and i had great memories of playing as both mario and luigi through this long fun and challenging classic game.

Mortal Kombat II(Super Nintendo)
Just like super mario world, one of the first games ever played. And just like Twisted Metal II it improves on the original Mortal kombat in so many ways. more characters, moves and arenas. great for any fan of fighting games

Grand Theft Auto III(Playstation 2)
I actually liked the old GTAs for playstation but i new they were just for fun and this series could never become great or classic. man was i wrong. GTA III completely changed the whole series. its was now 3rd with a cast of voice actors and a good story line and just fun to roam around the streets. while th enewer ones are more fun to play now they werent nearly as revolutionary as GTA III

Resident Evil (playstation)
The first game to actually scare the crap outta me and basicly invented the horror survival game genre. with many sequels and a remake this is definitly the best
4)http://ffxteam.ifrance.com/box/box-us-front.jpg
Final Fantasy X(playstation 2)
Out of all the final fantasy's this one IMO had the best characters and story line. this was the first great RPG for the PS2 and really showed off the graphical capabilities for the PS2. very long and challenging but its worth it.

Goldeneye(Nintendo 64)
With out a doubt the best film to game ever made. first great console shooter with both single and multi player which were a blast. while it looks inferior to the standards of todays console shooters it paved the way back in 1996 when it was first released

The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time(Nintendo 64)
This is one of the only games i think are truley perfect. We see link like we have never before. in full 3D with this lengthy intresting adventure. The story line is great filled with tons of humorous characters but also retains a serious side. the only thing is this seems like to be marketed to younger children but the difficulty is definitly not for younger kids.

Metal Gear Solid 2(playstation 2)
Not only the greatest stealth based game but IMO the greatest game ever. while some people say the first metal gear solid was better but this added what I think was a much better story line, and a change of main character. the gameplay is much more fun in this then was in the first. now you could look in first person view and alot more interactivity with the environments. some people complaine that there are too many cutscenes which take away from the gameplay however its just the opposite. the great story which is told in amazing cutscenes with superb graphics add you into the game and feel for the characters. I only wish you could control snake a little more than the first couple of scenes of the game.

Urge Over Kill, thank you for your compliments, that flash was pretty good for real flash. I absoultely love Crazy Taxi.
Now, on to (how ironic) The Taxi Driver. Your choices are ok by my standards, I especially dig your courage for choosing MGS2: SOL and saying how you liked the character change. That took balls, and while I disagree with the choice I approve of your testicles ;)

Don't get me wrong I like Snake better than Raiden as a character. but in terms of actually playing the game i like Raiden because he is more acrobatic and fun to use but Snake could possible be my favorite character from any video game

The Taxi Driver, you actually represent logic in the gaming community.
"I don't care if he has long blonde hair or if he's supposedly a whimp, I like his gameplay style, like a real gamer should."
Brilliantly put, if I wasn't so snobbish about the rep system then I would totally give you some.
You, like, deserve a medal for your comments.
If this sinks to the bottom of the forum graveyard I'll know that this isn't an important thread to have, but I might as well give it a go.

I was thinking it would be pretty cool if we made a top 100 MOFO videogames list...I just don't know how many gamers are out here

Mario Kart has to be on the list. Forgetting the modern rubbishy ones that are full of gimmicks, I'm on about the original SNES version...
And the SNES version of Zelda too. Top game...

Surprised by this. I felt MGS2 was a major letdown. Not even playing with Snake for most of the game. Too much time spent in the chat window talking to the Colonel.
