I personally shave my armpits and I see nothing wrong with it.

If I do why not men :yup:Exactly. Who said that only women could be the ones to do so? And this manly business, who's to say that since I don't have underarm hair I'm not a man? Politics. :D ;)

Not even women have to shave. If you believe in God he gave ya hair for a reason eh? Besides, this hair issue has been programmed in us since childhood.

I would like to add "I'm a man and I don't shave my armpits and I don't see why a man would want to do it since no one expects him too... but, sure, I don't care if John McClane et al shaves their armpits".

I have a confession.... I think it's sexy in some animal way with women who don't shave their armpits... At least, it can be....

This thread is... interesting.

As someone who is hardly over-endowed with hair on their head I couldn't think of anything more futile than shaving my armpits - I want to grow it long enough that one day I can sweep it over the top of my head to prevent sunburn.

Many many years ago I shaved my chest, however... ;)

I have never thought about men shaving their armpits.

I'm totally on board with questioning it, though. I mean, if you want to, it certainly isn't going to reduce your testosterone levels or something. I think if you want to, you should.

I don't shave my armpits and unless your armpit hair exceeds what is covered up when your arm is at rest, then I don't see any reason to shave it either.

But then again, I have a very Westernized view of beauty. And I like my Westernized view, thank you very much! Ladies that don't shave (arm pit or legs) kill it..

Neither do I.

Never shaved anything never will. I'm natural through and through. I wouldn't want to acccumulate wasted time on something that keeps growing back anyway.

To me shaving your legs is even more of a waste of time then shaving your armpits. That's my ethos. Each to his or her own.

Anyways, I don't shave my armpits. I don't care if you do. But I find body hair on a man sexy. You can be completely covered, I don't care. Back hair is even interesting, sometimes.

But then again, smooth can be interesting, sometimes. Shaving for a kink can be interesting, sometimes. I learned all about this at Django University.

And who started this thread........
I took all sorts of slagging of my mates for shaving my chest until a few of their wives commented on it being sexy, the next thing I know most of my mates are asking me which is the best razor for the job!!!
I'm secure in my body shaving, hell, I'm from Scotland, we are born like baby Chewbaccas to help fight the cold over here!!!
Oh yes, from my experience, it's better to do your own shaving, don't let your girlfriend anywhere near the razors!
In fact in my experience, I don't let any of my girlfriends near sharp objects, ah the number of Valentines cards written in crayon brings a tear to my eye.

This is an interesting topic. I believe that it does not fall out of America due to woman not shaving their underarms in europe.:) or atleast that is what I've heard. I'm a male, and I do have under arm hair and I do not shave them. If a man does, your probably to high maintance. You souldn't have to worry about it. There is nothing wrong with doing it tough. If woman don't shave under there, I find it to be a sort of gender bender...:p Please don't be offended.:)

I've heard that trimming your privates makes it look better, but I don't see how it works. I"M NOT SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT MY PRIVATES OF COURSE!!! THEY ARE FINE!!!

And, another thing I would like to add. Please, no matter how macho you are, shave your A$$. Man or woman, shave it!! IT"S JUST NASTY!!

This a fun topic:eek: - guess that is why so many have come to have their say.

I know from personal experience that many European women do not shave their armpits and most German men do NOT. They are far too organized and practical for that. (I don't know how that relates to this subject, just had to get that little 'dig' in there :D)
As an All American Girl living in Heidelberg Germany, I took to not shaving my pits cause it was just a bother, mostly, to shave and besides, I am lucky enough to have lite ash blonde hair except for below the waist where the Italian side of the family seems to reside. (I know, I know "too much information" for the American "afraid of body and bodily functions" phyce)
I know why girls shave. Cause it looks nice and if you have lots of dark hair then it makes sense. If a man shaves his pits then what would be the reason for doing that, I ask? Too MUCH hair? I think a little looks sexy on a man.

I have a flash back to Robin Williams in Fisher King, laying in Central Park in the nude. Holy Cow! He would need a tub of Nair to remove his pelt!:eek::eek::eek:

So, Why would a man want to shave his pits? Practical reasons or vainity reason?

Granted that American ways have crept into the EU culture and the numbers are rising here in Germany and other places where women now shave the underarm area. Advertising is a very powerful thing.

But I know many young professional women, not rural ladies, who pride themselves in being unshaven. For many it is a choice to go unshaven. For others, more from the east (where the wall has fallen away) are still unshaven by their choice.

That's a pretty damned good survey :). This could explain everything. North Western Europeans let their armpits flourish, while the rest impose strict restrictions on their armpits. I'm glad this is all cleared up :).

The point is: that word is applied to organised groups - normally governments - and normally ones with a nefarious/deceptive agenda. Unless there is some mass American movement to discredit europeans by suggesting they have very hairy armpits (and i'm not aware of one) then you've used the wrong word.

well mate, it's a common perception in america that european women don't shave their armpits, and since the majority of american women actually do shave their armpits, one can assume that they find unshaved armpits "icky", and thus by stating that european women don't shave their armpits, or as i like to say, SPREADING THEIR PROPAGANDA, they are trying to make european women seem inferior and rediculous in some way....so i think i used the word correctly.....

Look, for the word propaganda to be accurate in this situation you would need all of those American women to meet up and decide to do this - or at least have a group of clean-armpitted leaders who met up and decided it on their behalf. They don't.

You're using the wrong word. What you're talking about is not a deliberately orchestrated manipulative use of perceptions as a weapon.

That said, if this is a genuine trend, then it's of the 'assuming inferiority' type - which all countries and regions do (but which the US just happens to be capable of doing bigger and 'better' ;)). Such social beliefs normally come more from the desire to protect your own self image, rather than the desire to attack or harm others. They're more about unconscious defence than conscious attack.

I think that's a pretty astute supposition. Unfortunately, from the other side, they usually look awfully similar, but it's important to understand the impulse in order to react appropriately.

I don't think American women shave their armpits (Piddy, that's the part by the shoulder) in order to do anything to anyone, it just makes your deodorant stick last longer. :D

What i wanna know though, is does anyone you know really think european women are hairy above their 'överarmen'? In a disparaging way. Is adidasss right to think there is some europe-belittingling belief of that type knocking round the States?

It's my experience that if I don't shave my pits, I have more surface area under my arms, providing more area for bacteria to avoid exposure to sun and fresh air, my deodorant gets used up faster, doesn't last as long during the day and I don't like the feeling of the hair there. So my personal choice is to shave it. For me and my body, it's the hygenic choice.

It's my understanding, and I'm in America so I guess my understanding could be the typical american understanding on this, that some women in Europe don't shave their armpits.

It's my experience that some american women don't either. I've never noticed a difference in odor between these women and myself, but then I can't say I've actively sniffed them.

It's also been my experience that actively sniffing anyone just doesn't play.

So while I wouldn't be comfortable with not shaving, and my personal experience leads me to feel a little weird on behalf of those who don't, I wouldn't say that I feel superior in any way to those stinky ape-women in Europe.

you've basically proven my point, if , like you say, americans believe "some" european women don't shave their armpits but are fully aware that "some" american women don't do it either, then why would they even mention european women as a reference point when they speak of women that don't shave their armpits? why not say "well, certain american women don't shave their armpits"....i'll tell you why, because of "THE PROPAGANDA" intended to make americans feel in some way superior....and it's completely false....european women shave their armipts just as often as american women......case closed.....

It's generally not considered hygenic by people in the US for women not to shave their pits. I don't know why it's ok for men not to and women have to, but that is the generally accepted convention.

HOWEVER... it's not propaganda. It's a trend in personal care. Seriously, women don't consider themselver better than european women for any reason I'm aware of. And it's certainly not "propaganda". As Golgot said, you're misusing the word, almost hilariously. Propaganda is an overt action with a definite goal. Social norms are not engineered, they just happen.

Besides which, why assume we think we're better? Maybe we just think we're hairier.

I don't shave them, but I have an electric shaver, so I use one of the attachments and keep them trim. I keep everything trim. I do my face once a week, my eyebrows ones every two weeks, and everything else I can reach about once every two months. The only thing I shave is the back of my neck. Men shouldnt shave their armpits, theyre men! Now a porno star may shave their butt or the inside walls of their hiney, that's ok, but not the armpits. :nope:

I don't see the advantages of it. You will still have to keep shaving it constantly - twice daily in my case to keep it at bay.I could tie the hair on my arse in platts if I wanted.

Seeing as that type of hair is the equivalent of ball bearings, I say go for it.

hey guys, it's been a long time :)

I voted for I'm a man and I shave my armpits, so yea.

I thought that it is the most popular selection but when I clicked on it it appeared not to be. Of course I'm not criticizing people who simply have other preferences than me, that was just what I thought.

To me I generally hate body hair although where I come from we have a lot of it :D so I sometimes I have to spend a lot of time getting rid of it.

but it's a great thing to have facial hair though, I normally shave it, but it's good to have it sometimes for a change
