Stars Gather for TV Benefit
Alicia KeysThe nation's biggest television networks are setting aside an hour tonight to air a musical appeal for hurricane relief, an echo of a somber event held four years ago.
"Shelter From the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast," is scheduled for 8 to 9 p.m. EDT with Paul Simon, the Dixie Chicks, Alicia Keys and Sheryl Crow among the performers.
ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, UPN and the WB, the six biggest broadcast networks, have all agreed to air it along with several cable networks. Viewers in nearly 100 countries were able to tune in.
Contributions were being solicited for the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army.
The event shared the same executive producer, Joel Gallen, as "America: A Tribute to Heroes," a two-hour benefit that was seen across the TV dial following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Gallen planned the same mixture of performances and understated appeals from Hollywood stars.
Chris Rock, Jennifer Aniston, Jack Nicholson and Ellen DeGeneres were among the performers who signed up to ask for contributions.
It's the most high-profile of several such televised benefits. BET was also appealing for help Friday for victims of a tragedy that struck the black community hard, and MTV planned its own concert for Saturday.
