View Full Version : Thinking of getting a camera...
For shooting video, gatherings, and perhaps...a short film.
Here is the problem. I don't have 2k to drop on the camera. More like 1k. I know folks like Peter and Christian have swell cameras, but I am pretty sure Peter's cam was up around 1500 or 2k, which I can't swing right now. Any recommendations in my price range from you aspiring filmmakers?

Well any Sony Camera is good. I recommend the Sony Vx-1000 if its in your price range or if you can find it. Im pretty sure you could find one for around 1200. It dosent have an LCD screen but the picture quality is great. My Advice, Just look around sony. Sony has the best camcorders out there and if you shop around im sure you could find one that suits you. Oh, and if your into high quality anything with 3CCD's is good. So if you find a low priced 3CCD camcorder id go for it. I just recently purchased a Sony Vx2000 for 1500 on ebay for making short films and ive heard that sonys quality cant be beat. Good luck in finding what you want. Hope my advice helped. Just remember 3CCDs.

well, I know it's risky, but you could try to get the other thousand off the stock market.
Well...some news on the camera front. The short film I was toying around with seems to have gained some steam as of late. A photographer friend of mine has jumped on board, bringing his Canon XL-1 along for the ride. I am psyched to be able to have not only a better-than-I-expected camera to shoot the footage with, I have an experienced man behind the rig. Couple this with the magnificent Poor man's steady-cam (http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/steadycam/), and things are looking up. As for my own camera purchase, which is still full speed ahead, I am looking at the Panasonic GS250. Seems like a good deal, and is available for some fairly reasonable prices online.
Screenplay about 90% finished, and has gotten some positive reviews from the folks I have shown it to. Storyboard artist on board and getting started on the set-ups. Above all, I want to have fun with the steady-cam. ;)

I've got the Panasonic dvx100 and have shot tons on it. Great camera and you can get a used one for about 1 - 1.5 grand it shoots 24p which looks fantastic.
