Family Guy is one of the biggest cult shows out there. A good bit of people on this website alone worship it, not to mention a good sized portion of my friends. It's cult following got it brought back on the air after it was cancelled. And my question is why?
Most fans response to this is simple: "random humor".
I understand that the show is going for laughs through obscure pop culture references and out-of-nowhere poop-and-sex gags, and in all truth, a lot of my humor is that way, but I don't find this show hilarious, or even funny at all. I used to really like it. I used to crack up. I was never a huge fan, but I'd watch episodes here and there and laugh my ass off. But recently, I watched a few episodes and was bored out of my mind. I think the show is a blatant rip-off of The Simpsons, that doesn't really understand satire. So what does it replace the intelligence of The Simpsons with? Broad, silly, inane humor often involving fat jokes, poop jokes, bizarro pop culture references, or "offensive" humor that gets all those folks that voted for Bush grabbing their pitchforks and torches. And its proud of that. Its like watching that kid in class who thinks he's hilarious brag about how funny he is right after telling a joke. I'm no prude. I don't find really much of anything offensive, so thats not what turns me off of the show. I just don't think its intelligent, and its too self-congratulatory to be enjoyable. And I liked Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Kill Bill, so I know self-congratulatory.

Anyone else out there with me? Or am I bat-**** insane?

You're Bat-**** Insane!!!

Family Guy is by far the most innovative and utterly hilarious cartoon I've ever seen (Early Simpsons might edge it out slightly - but it still wasn't quite as cutting edge as Family guy is). The random stuff and American Pop culture references have been done before, but never this effectively. It also has some of the greatest one-liners ever delivered and Stewie Griffin never fails to make me laugh.

Even though the new episodes have kind of sucked, Season 2 is classic comedy.

I just don't think its intelligent

This is probably the reason you can't enjoy the show. If you're looking for smart humor - Family Guy is not the place to go. It's so stupid and inane, that it can't help but be funny to viewers who are looking for dumbed-down entertainment.

You may not like Family Guy, and that's fine and all, but it's not because the show is fundamentally different from The Simpsons, which also plenty of obscure pop culture references. In one episode, for example, Marge is chased by a giant white ball, ala The Prisoner, a short-lived British series from the late 1960s.

At its height, The Simpsons is vastly superior, but it's slowed a bit and Family Guy is a welcome replacement for that lost edginess. I'd consider myself a fan.

"I was thinking we could dress her in a pair of sequin capri pants."
"Peter, they didn't have capri pants in the 1860s."
"They did now!"

The obscure pop culture references don't really bother me at all- like I said, my sense of humor relies on me saying electric boogaloo a lot and quoting movies that only a few of my classmates have seen. But when The Simpsons make pop culture references, its funny, and its not the whole show. Family Guy is only these pop culture references, which leaves me all winked and nudged out. Family Guy's references are never as clever as The Simpsons, and hardly as subtle (not to say The Simpsons is subtle, but in Family Guy the references announce themselves so loudly that its liked being nudged in the ribs after hearing an ok joke, making the whole decent joke irritating).

" Dad, I tried to go to school but that guy outside won't let me."
"Oh yeah? Him and What Army?"
"The U.S. army"
Oh, Thats a pretty good army."

"Don't worry, I read a book about this once."
"Peter, are you sure it was a book and not...nothing?"
"Oh yeah"

"I hate lyin' to Lois but sometimes that's the best way to keep her from knowing the truth."

"Chris, everything I say is a lie. Except that. And that. And that. And that. And that."

Did you happen to see the recent episode with the bit about Van Gough. Just brilliant! Or at least hilarious.

Meg Griffin: Oh. Oh, this is just my bird calls.
Peter Griffin: Do it again! Do it again!
[Meg whistles, Big Bird's footsteps approached]
Big Bird: Yeah? Well, what'd you want?
Meg Griffin: Uh...
Big Bird: You called me, right?
Meg Griffin: Oh, no, no I wasn't calling you.
[laughs nervously]
Big Bird: Oh, oh, this is funny to you? Y-yeah? Y-you know what pain in the ass is to get across town this time a day, huh?
Peter Griffin: Listen, uh, but mister we don't want any trouble here.
Big Bird: I don't fly you know. I take the subway like everybody else. Oh and people don't stare. You made me puke...
[spits]
Big Bird: ... bit*h.

[Gets out of bed and gets dressed]
Bert: Some poor bastard got his head blown off down at a place called Hooper's.
Ernie: Bert, I wish you wouldn't drink so much, Bert.
Bert: Well, Ernie, I wish you wouldn't eat cookies in the DAMN BED.
Ernie: Bert, you're yelling at me again, Bert.

I dislike the show as well. It to me, is completely pointless and its funny in small doses but after that it just gets kinda stupid. The only to people I like in the show are the guy that yell's the Giggidy thingy and Stuey. A baby dominating the world, now thats funny but most of the rest of it is pointless, stupid, humor.

You guys are kididng. Not liking Family Guy is a sin!

The first guy says he says he laughs his ass off (or something similiar), but still doesn't like it? Huh?

Hellboy says:

Humor is humor. I mean, if you guys want something a lot more entertaining...I don't know what to say. Comedy Central?

When The Family Guy originally aired, I wasn't too thrilled by it. At the time, everyone and their friggin' brothers to boot were using the… (I don't know what it's called…when there's a quick aside giving us a visual of something mentioned). It was first used with proliferation on HBO's great comedy Dream On. But then, commercials were using that style left and right, hum-drum episodic television was going crazy copying the idea, and then The Family Guy comes along using the same unoriginal idea, passing it off as innovative.

A few years passed by and that technique kind of died off...then I found that I like the show a lot. I don't set my watch to any television at all, but if I'm bored and channel surfing and happen upon Peter and family...I'll usually watch it.

It's a good show, but not nearly as original as many people think.

I said when I was younger, I used to laugh my ass off at this show. Now I've found flaws in it that make me dislike it. I don't laugh when I watch it, and I've watched a few episodes lately to check and see if my declarations were true. They are. I dislike the show.

How can you not find it funny? I mean, what the hell? This is Family Guy. Maybe you need to get outside some more...or if you're on ridlin, that's something. Maybe you eat so much sugar that you enter into a gloom mode. Maybe....maybe...maybe YOU'VE LOST YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR!!!!

Not a big fan of the show, although it does seem pretty funny, the episodes I have watched. Me, I just don't like commercial TV, so it's more of a general thing for me. I only watch two shows, and I try to catch those on DVD to avoid the marketing... Sometimes I can't help myself though, and just HAVE to catch the new episode of 24 or BG when it first airs...

Slay mentioned Dream On, I miss that show....
