It was not.

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross' movie Run Ronnie Run, expanded from one of the good bits from their cult HBO television program "Mr. Show with Bob & David" (1995-1998), was a disappointment for just about everybody involved, including Bob and David and any loyal fans who tracked it down. It did not ever get a theatrical release, but debuted on DVD in September of 2003, after sitting finished on a shelf for over a year.

It has some funny stuff in it, of course, though virtually all of the best material in the movie is taken from episodes of their TV show. The overall arc of the film is too unfocused, and far too often it plays like what it is: an idea that was terrific as a seven-minute sketch, but nowhere near enough there for a full feature.

I imagine anyone who hasn't seen "Mr. Show" would find Run Ronnie Run that much funnier, but even in that context it's a disappointment. I very, very highly recommend "Mr. Show with Bob & David", all four seasons of which are now available on R1 DVD. Odenkirk and Cross and their cohorts are hysterically funny, but their full brilliance can only be witnessed on their underrated television program, and not in the stale movie that pretty rightfully could find no distribution for a theatrical release after New Line had disasterous preview screenings, even when full of rabid "Mr. Show" fans.

There's also a very good companion book to the series (Mr. Show: What Happened?! The Complete Story and Episode Guide), including a full and thorough episode guide as well as interviews with and profiles of the performers and writers, who include Jack Black, Jeanne Garofalo, Sarah Silverman, Tom Kenny, Brian Posehn, Jill Talley, Jay Johhnston, Becky Thyre and many others.

I'd grade all four seasons of "Mr. Show" an A, and Run Ronnie Run a very generous C-.

Ive never seen the show iw ill admit, but the movie to me was just so funny. It was like Joe Dirt with the comedy kicked up a few notches. Im not really a big fan of gillbilly movies either but this one did it for me.

Pretty much everything Holden said is bang on. I'd rather just watch an episode of Mr. Show.

I don't know if I agree that the show was underrated, but there was one episode where Bob says "...and sometimes it made you think. And that's when the ratings took a nose-dive." Which is sadly probably all too true.

Check out Tom Goes To The Mayor also, if you get it, it features a good deal of the Odenkirk crew. If you appreciate the (unintentional) hilarity inherent in any small town/local cable access culture, you'll definitely get a kick out of it.
