Yesterday i handed in my last ever assignment for my University Degree, the last piece of coursework i may have to do for a very long time, and as my trembling, swollen fingers handed over that plastic covered essay to the lovely woman behind the student counter, a small part of me, deep down had a little orgasm. Ever since i was five years old i have been in education. I have travelled from learning how to spell 'Apple' in class one, to writing a 3,500 word essay on how the Postmodern condition is a recognition of the way in which the ‘grand narratives’ of Western history have broken down and can no longer legitimate foundations for truth and knowledge...so for now, i'm gonna give my brain a bit of a break, as i think it has begun to fall out of my ears...either that or i need some cotton buds.
I've got a few more months of being a slovernly student and i want some more fun before entering the dark world of the 'real', so my question is, What would or did you do on the first day of the rest of your life?
I want to hear some suggestions. A bit dramatic i know but then again i'm all about the drama :D
For me, one of the things i have done today is catch ants. Exciting stuff.
For Christmas my bro bought me one those cool Antiquariums full of this blue transparent goo that the ants can live in and build tunnels so i spent way too long in our garden trying to catch ants. It was fun. Even though i now think theyre all dead :( But after i finished my hunting, i sat on the grass with the sun in my face, reading a book that has nothing to do with my degree. It was lovely.
So what would you do?

Oh boy.
Congrats on finishing! I'm only a measly 1st year :(, but I reckon I can imagine the kind of freedom with which you speak of.
Firstly I would find a more effective way to catch ants, get heaps and watch them run around in the goo :D
Then I would step outside my house and scream YEEEEESSS!!!!!!!!
Stare defiantly at my neighbours who just came outside to see what's happened
eat a stupidly big hot breakfast from a local cafe
buy the daily paper and sit there unable to move from fullness and just be content for a while.
Rent some DVD's
Buy some junk food to have while watching them.
Call some friends and organise something spontaneous and fun; like going on a road trip or doing paintball, whatever.
Throw a crazy crazy party
Then at the end of it all as the sun comes up I would say something really profound......like maybe.....ok I'm no good at profound but I'm sure you'll think of something, with your degree almost finsihed and all :p to mark the day you were set free.

Seeing as I graduated 11 long years ago, I've had a few 'first day of the rest of your life'(s) to ponder.
They mainly involved never drinking/smoking again though the best one was giving two fingers to The Man, walking out of work and setting up a business. That was 3 years ago and I still remember the look on my old boss's face when I told him to "**** off, I've got a car waiting."
Now, if today was the first day of the rest of my life (which it might be) I'd put the flat on the market and look for a little cottage in Cork, or maybe Burgandy.
Oh, and buy a new dishwasher. :)
EDIT - not a cottage in the George Michael sense...

GOD IM JUST BONKERS ARNT I! :goof:...I still remember the look on my old boss's face when I told him to "**** off, I've got a car waiting."I love it! Me and my houseamtes have also vowed to give up smoking and rinking after we leave....not too sure its gonna happen.

Now a dishwasher is a thing that only a student can dream of. They are merely a myth. Legend.

I won't be done with education until I'm at least thirty. That's a bit too far ahead for me to think.

Your essay sounds interesting...
Since the postmodern condition argues that time and place no longer exist in the way we, or the "grand narratives", have always regarded them, one could say that the phrase "the first day of the rest of your life" is rather meaningless. Linear chronology is sooo modernist! Then again, postmodern theorists are under heavy attack from all kinds of different directions and being criticized for being nothing else but a critical school within modernism itself, longing back to the days when modernism was actually something ..eh.. modern. So, back to square one, I guess....
Dear Blibb,
Since I have goofed around most of my 20s I have not yet encountered "the first day of the rest of my life" yet. I am now paying for years of why-do-today-what-you-can-do-tomorrow-or-next-week but soon the summer is here and then I will get a little break and hopefully wake up on something similar as a "first day of the rest of my life". I will then lie in bed, reading the morning paper until noonish. Then take a walk, meet some friends for coffee downtown, have a afternoon in the park with wine and perhaps something else. Then a barbecue at night that turns to the usual rum and reggae music feast that you thought ended at 2:30 am when it really was 5. That would be nice...

Like me then... But I'm actually turning thirty soon. Way too soon...

I really am. Only for about a year then my brain would have healed by then, but for now, consider me backwards :)

This is true. However, paint me modernist! Linear chronology is so more comforting than stupid Post Mod...although spending the next year attempting to deconstruct grand narratives could be quite fun :)

Rum and reggae music feast? Is this a feast for the ears of the belly? or both? If so, sounds like a good day. Ive already had two BBQ's, one ending a very messily. Ive now returned home to my native Essex for some lovin from mumma...thats the 'motherly' kind of love :suspicious:

It sure sounds like a ball! Postmodernity is fun, basically because it is so stupid and far out, man! When I said "sooo modernist" I meant it with a twist of ;)

The best love there is... The Essex Mumma lovin...
Here the weather is not that good thus no BBQ yet. But who gives a crap when I have to sit here with this stupid essay anyway. We must write in pairs and the guy I'm writing with has so far contributed with exactly 0 pages while I've written around 12. But I wanted to write by myself originally so I guess this is what I first expected...
Rum and reggae music feast is a feast for the ears, belly, mind, right and left knees and just about every other part of your body. I love reggae and I love jamaican rum. And this summer I am hopefully going to Summerjam 2005 in Cologne. I went in 2003 and can you believe it, some germans do actually know how to be mellow. The best festival ever.

Congratulations blibby!
It sounds like you've been making the most out of every minute. Good eating, good drinking and now for some good luv'n'. ;)
So what are your plans after all the celebrating is finally over. Will you be looking for a job or maybe some traveling before the job step?
As far as the first day goes...for me I think it's felt like that with each major life change.

1) I would get all the newspapers i could get from the local store (in a bathrobe) then i would go home and lay in bed reading said papers.
2) around lunch time i would get some friends to the local park with a huge picnic rug and huge basket, with a few glasses of wine and lay in the grass.
3) then go home order heaps and heaps of chinese food, invite all my family and friends over, listen to some good music and enjoy some good company.
4) then have a very long bath, blissing out.
how good life would be...

Well, it all depends on what was going on at that time. If I was dating a special someone since no one can remember, I'd probably take her out on a nice date and if she was the right person I'd ask that someone to marry me. That's only if she was the right gal and I'd been with her for a long time. Chances of that happening to me when I hit life, silm to none. Most likely, I'd spend the day with the most important person in my life at that time. That sounds like the best thing to do.
And congrats on one step closer to life. :) For I've got right many to come.
