How can I open an .xls document ?

I was sent a letter the other day and had to download it and the document had an .xls at the end. I triedto use wordpad, then microsoft word but no luck.

What can I use in order to view it?? Please help.

.xls is a Microsoft Excell file, if you don't have Excell you can send it to me and I think I can convert it to a .pdf and you can open that in Adobe Acrobat, which is free.

You need Microsoft Excel. It comes standard with most PCs.

If you were sent it by someone you don't know, however, don't open it. I believe malicious XLS files can be fairly harmful if executed.

Question is why would somebody write a letter using excel??? Now that's the question, because while excel is good for databases, graphs ect.. it's no good for writing anything lengthy. The others are right the Excel extention though it's .xls
