You are not old ;)

If your old, I am old, and I am not old!!

I try to listen to new music mostly, even though I love my old stand-bys...

Some of the artists in my list are trance producers (Atmos, Hux Flux), so you probably won't recognize them....

Oh yeah baby!

Yeah, I've always loved that song. I think the title is fantastic. When A-ha were massively big The Sun Always Shines On TV was my favourite song. But then, as a kid, I just thought it was nice to sing along to, I didn't understand the melancholy that A-ha actually have in their songs embedded in all those catchy keyboard tunes. I am definately buying their Greatest Hits CD when I get my next paycheck. Even though they're from Norway.... :p

I stumbled upon this website, it was kind of an online magazine, and there was a column where comedians and musicians (such as David Cross and Ben Gibbard) would shuffle up ten random songs on their ipod and give some kind of description for each one...why they liked it, memories it invoked etc... I thought we could do that here.

1. "A Certain Romance" - Arctic Monkeys

Hype in the new music scene can be annoying, and the British press sure knows how to lay it on thick, but they just may be onto something here. The guitarwork flows from melodic yet disjointed seamlessly into a sublime-like skank with Alex Turner's vocals riding smoothly on top like a cockney Julian Casablancas. That's right, they're quite a bit like the strokes, but their playing is more original and they keep from getting tedious by varying the sound greatly from one section of the song to another. Plus there is some decent writing here: "there's only music so that there's new ring tones." We can be sure they'll get more credit than they probably deserve as time goes on but still, it's a fun listen.

2. "Street Fighting Man" - The Rolling Stones

I was never too crazy about this one compared to a lot of The Stones other songs. However Keith Richards did pretty well here to utilize the crisp sound of acoustic guitars, yet find a way to distort it and make it sound loud enough to fit the type of music they liked to make. The sound on the chorus is fairly innovative too. The instruments blend very strangely (in a good way) and the unusual percussion plus the sitar lend an exotic air that transport the song to a bit of a higher plane.

3. "Last Great American Whale" - Lou Reed

The arrangement here is fairly simple, taking a back seat to the weirdly funny story told by Lou Reed in a disillusioned, aged monotone.

4. "Bye Bye Johnny" - Chuck Berry

This is a sequel to "Jonny B. Goode" and it's interesting for that reason even it's not really one of Berry's better songs.

5. "Oh Sister" - Elliott Smith

Here, Smith decides to cover Dylan, he doesn't really have the power in his voice to pull it off, but you have to give him credit for his good choices of material and interesting repertoire.

6. "State Inspector" - State Radio

Chetro formerly of Boston-based band Dispatch picks up some punk swagger with his new band and pumps up the reggae influence they used to experiment lightly with. This particular song doesn't display the reggae aspect, but pairs punks ferocity with Chetro's voice and the fake Jamacain nuances in his voice remind me of Joey Ramone singing in a punk band with a fake British accent. I saw them live and they really know how to captivate a crowd through passion and energy.

7. "Body and Soul" - Thelonious Monk

The Master of jazz piano takes on the great standard with many a flourish and a style that is all his own. What can I say? It just sounds really good.

8. "Here Comes Your Man" - Pixies

An uncharacteristically poppy song for this band. This never fails to make me feel good.

9. "Clap Hands" - Tom Waits

Waits growls like a malevolent goul through the haze of junkyard percussion punctuated by bells that seem to be calling you to fall at his feet in complete awe. The lyrics may not make much sense, but they sound damn cool. The instruments I've already described plus that persistent, off-kilter guitar arrpegio add up to a song that is truly atmospheric. If you close your eyes, you may almost feel like he's dragged you down to the underworld from which this type of song springs forth.

10. "Mr. Tambourine Man" - Bob Dylan

What the hell could I possibly say about this song?

cool...I'll try it.

1. Norah Jones - I've Got To See You Again

This song makes me want to be a saucy puppet.
Not really...it's the only Norah Jones song I have, which I downloaded after a friend of mine raved about it being "the best sex song ever"...I like it okay, for what it is (jazzy, slightly seductive), but I can think of better sex songs...

2. Dressy Bessy - If You Should Try and Kiss Her

An absolute guilty pleasure...like all of the songs apart of the But I'm A Cheerleader Soundtrack (one of my favorite movies), warm, bubbly, girly, with lyrics that ring in my head minutes afterwards.

3. Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes

You know...the first time I really paid attention to this song was when I watched Duets...which was really not all that great of a flick, but the whole purpose of watching it was really because me and my friend wanted something to giggle and make fun of...plus, I am addicted to karaoke. When I watched revolting Gwyneth Paltrow sing Bette Davis Eyes, I was sort of slack-jawed in awe...I didn't know whose voice it was hers, a voiceover, but I was completely in awe over it, and knew I wanted the song...Kim Carnes voice is much more raspier than Gwyneth's but I have actually ended up falling in love with Carnes version much more. There's just something about

She'll take a tumble on you
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
She's got Bette Davis eyes

that makes me smile each time I hear it...ew, I'm a freak!

4. Dido - Whiteflag

ahh...this song...the first time I noticed it was when I was working at Blockbuster video, we were allowed to listen to music later at night...and I was always working nights back then...my manager only listened to one station...and for some reason this song would play multiple times on that station...I can remember every time it would come on she'd sing along to it, and I thought she had quite a nice voice...eventually I was singing along to it.
There seems to be a trend with all these songs so far but I can't quite put my finger on it...

5. Pearl Jam - Last Kiss

I actually prefer The Cavaliers version to this one...its funny though, because only just the other day I was talking to my ex about this song, and he prefers Pearl Jams version, and he said something along the lines of, the reason he can't stand The Cavaliers version is because J Frank Wilson sounds too happy, and Pearl Jam sounds truly tortured. And given the subject matter its more appropriate, and I had to agree with that...

When I was younger we were very religious, and the Pearl Jam version came out when I was about 13. I can remember me and my friends singing along to it in the car one day and my friends mom scolded us, saying we shouldn't sing lyrics that included "She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good, so I can see my baby when I leave this world"...because we didn't believe in heaven...see it may be little things like these that have turned me off of religion so damn much!

6. Elvis - I Can't Help Falling In Love With You

I've decided this will be my wedding song if my future husband agrees.

7. Jim Croce - Rapid Roy (the stock car boy)

Jim Croce is god...seriously.
My mother used to listen to his greatest hits CD when I was about 11 or 12, on like a daily basis...all of his songs brings back memories of living in that Massachusetts apartment complex...getting ready for church...putting my nylons on, tearing them...spending 20 minutes brushing the same spot in my hair...my mom and sister screaming at each other.
Jim Croce is god...seriously.

8. Loretta Lynn - Your Squaw Is On The Warpath

I saw Loretta Lynn in concert when I was about 8 with my mom and grandparents...it was a concert on the lake, up in Massachsetts called Indian Ranch...I had no idea who Loretta Lynn was and spent the entire concert swimming in the lake...I remember I saw a boy and a girl about 12 years old or so, in the lake together, and they were holding hands and I remember thinking I couldn't wait until I could start dating.

I saw the movie based on Loretta Lynns life Coal Miners Daughter a few years later, and absolutely loved it...and fell in love with all her music in the process.

9. King Of New York - Newsies Soundtrack

The first Christian Bale movie I ever saw, my mother took my sister and I to see this at the theater on opening weekend...when it comes to musicals, I walk the line. Some I love, some I hate. I loved this. You fall in love with the music...and Christian Bale.

10. Duran Duran - Notorious

Okay so I've known this song since I was a wee lady, but the reason upon downloading it? Donnie Darko..."Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!"

11. Tim Mcgraw & Faith Hill - It's Your Love

My mom and stepdads wedding song...mmmhmm.

12. Natalie Merchant - Ophelia

A wee lady around these parts turned me onto this song with the sexy voice, among others...I wonder if anyone can guess who I speak of!

13. Eagles - One of These Nights

This sort of falls into the same category as Jim Croce...except the really disturbing thing I have recently discovered is that there are actually some people out there who hate the Eagles! Preposterous!

14. Madonna - Like A Virgin

Reservoir Dogs, Leon: The Professional....two major reasons I downloaded this song.

15. Metric - Raw Sugar

Was seriously hoping they'd show up on the shuffle...I don't think I ever fell in love with a music group as fast as hard as I did with Metric. It is the only time I will ever tell EVERYONE...to check out their music. Normally I wouldn't say that to just everyone cause I understand some people just flat out hate the things I love but with Metric its different. I swear!...
