People say that the music of today is not as good as the music of other decades... Now i would despute that and say that there may not be as much good music around today, but what is comming out it just as good as what has come out... So who are some of your favorite bands around today, producing new and exciting material???

P.S, No answers like "Lynrd Skynrd are my favorite band around today" 'coz while Yes they may still be tour and producing new stuff... they are hardly at their peak...

Opeth

Swedish progressive heavy metal band, Producing some of the most well constructed and founded rock of all time. Their sound ranges from thrashing guitars, speed fulled drumming and dark growling vocals, to some of the most captivating harmonical vocals you will ever hear, often seemlessly weaving the two (and many more) sounds together. If you don't mind VERY heavy music i suggest the album Your Arms, My Hearse, however if you want a great totally mellow album listen to Damnation.

Great slow atmospherical Stoner/Metalcore from Boston. Althought alot of it is very heavy it also is able to create a chilled out feeling. The way their music is so capibal of changeing the way your feeling is quite simple amazing, Listening to the album Oceanic littraly makes you feel like your in the middle of the sea... Some brilliant stuff.

Atmosphere

You may have heard of them, Some brilliant intellegent and emotional hip hop from Cinci. Turning rap away from Drugs, Bitchas and Shootin Niggaz and making it about much more. MC Slug is not only a brillant rhymer but has found a way of expressing his frustration at the world we live in into something intelligent.

Xavier Rudd

The most original and catchy stuff to come out of this new wave of Blues/Reggee (Jack Johnson, John Butler, Ben Harper), This one man band from Northen NSW (Australia) is pretty damned cool. He is touring the US at the moment and anyone who has the chance should check him out...

Maybe some more later...

The music of today is just limited in....well it's limitations. In the past there were bands like The Beatles, Rolling Stones and even Elvis who excited young people and developed universal following with their boundary pushing antics (for that particular time in history).

There's just a lot less of that now; during the 60's, 70's and 80's loads of new types of music emerged. Offsetting each other and drawing people in. Things like Punk Rock, Alternative, Funk, Disco, Trance and the heavy metals we hear today are a lot different from what they emerged from.

Some people say 'rock music is dead' well to be honest they're probably right, there's just so much less quality in the music coming out. Bands like Led Zepplin and The Ramones were awesome in their time, but it feels like an era is dying a bit as rock splits into many many factions.

I'm a huge Metallica fan and they are still rumbling out the stadiums but the huge mega rock band is a dying bread. In the words of that record-reviewer in Almost Famous "You're just in time for the death rattle".....ok that was meant to be said quite a few years back but I think it applies now more than ever.

so yeah Metallica

Radiohead

As long as they continue to produce thought provokingly interesting music, I'd sit them down right next to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in 'greatest bands' category.

Guster
Ben Harper
Jack Johnson
Green Day
NOFX
Rancid
Wilco
R.E.M.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Cake
O.A.R.
Trey Anastasio
Dave Matthews Band

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

Tom Waits (still putting out GREAT material after all these years), Primus, Guitar Wolf, Martin Newell, Los Straitjackets, The Hellacopters, Turbonegro, The Mooney Suzuki, The Flaming Sideburns, Foetus, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Ween, Beck, Bjork, Radiohead, etc.

A lot of these bands and artists aren't new, but they have released quality material in the last 5 years.

His new one is great.

Muse is my favorite new band, I guess.
I think I like Modest Mouse, as well. Need to hear more from them to be sure.
And Keane is really gorgeous music.

As far as musicianship goes, I'd put Muse up against any band from any decade.

Personal favorite, which I feel takes the top rung in the recently usurped "genre" that is emo: Brand New. Deja Entendu is a lyricaly (by emo standards) flawless compact disc.

But I submit, via standards of musicianship and consistency:

Tom Waits just keeps getting better with Age. Angels of Light, I'm glad Michael Gira's still producing decent music, but it's still a big step down from the Swans. Likewise with Foetus. Flow is fine when you compare it to other stuff that's coming out, but Hole and Nail are probably my two favorite albums of all time, and from there (or even Thaw or the Wiseblood/early Steroid Maximus albums and eps) it's still a steady decline for Thirwell.

The most exciting band I've heard in the last five years is Flux Information Sciences. Sort of a throwback to Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, Suicide's first album, and early Einsturzende Neubauten, if that means anything to anyone.

Other than that, Polysics, The Prima Donnas, and The Handsome Family are all great, and The Sparks really came back strong with their most recent album, Lil' Beethoven.

Yeah... I probably like it a lot more just because I adore Michael Gira so much. Still though, Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home has moments of utter brilliance.

Katatonia
http://www.rocket.fm/img/tmp/katatonia.jpg

Katatonia is a Doom project, which formed in the early 90's, and are still going strong. They've changed their styles to keep things fresh, but they have never abanndoned the depressive sound the fans love. They went from Death Doom/Darkwave (on albums such as Dance of December Souls, For Funerals to Come, Jhva Elohim Meth, Brave Murder day* Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth does vocals on Saw You Drown*) To a more Gothic/Doom sound ( on albums such Saw You Drown and Discouraged ones) To where they are now. A mix between the Gothyish stuff and a new sound (they coined) Depressive Rock (on albums like Last Fair Deal Gone Down, Viva Emptiness) But still after changing their sound, they have fans who have been with them from the beginning. If you choose to check these guys out, I believe you should get one of the compilations they have released. Brave Yesterdays, is a mix of the older Death Doom stuff. And the newest compilation is called The Black Sessions, which features work from their gothyish stage to their new depressive rock stage.

Man, I remember when I first discovered Green Day. "Dookie" came out and I loved it... I went to see Bad Religion and Green Day was the opening act and totally stole the show. They started with "Welcome to Paradise"... I still love that cd. It's part of my growing up.

RHCP definately, uhhhhh...I don't listen to much new music. I've just gotten into Radiohead, a friend of mine made a compilation cd that he thought I'd like. He was right. Aerosmith could count, even thought their last album was a bunch of old blues songs. I wanna say Pink Floyd but they haven't made anything new since 1994 I believe.

i have to say cursive.
they broke all the rules...
they have an annoying noise track, a song that basically calls other bands and cursive themselves cliche, a grumbly noisy song that isnt good at all, but is great in the context of the album, a song about pinnochio, & some angry fast songs...

then they have a 10 minute closer that is basically an orchestra (well, maybe not an orchestra, but gretta is amazing on cello anways) and chior piece that deals with the most cliche and overused topic ever - suicide - and yet manages to show the topic in an entirely different light...
listen to "staying alive" and tell me you dont get emotional...

You'r list is pathetic...... The only bands that stand out is The Hot Hot Heat, RAGE, and Coldplay. I belive that they don't even stand out that much, for all they are just cheap copies of the Beatles, Bowie, and Queen. What you're basically stating by posting those bands is that Alternative and UK rock is the best music of today and it may very well be, but not those bands..... The Bloc Party??? are you effing serious. Ill give you props for posting the White Stripes, for they are from my stomping grounds. The Killers- Have you ever wonered what a updated version of Bowie or Queen wuold sound like? Enough said. Each one of there songs can be decphiered into just the same thing over and over again.

Fall Out Boy- People for some reason loves these guys. I will give them credit for being able to play their instruments other then that they're just rolling along with the fad which is Main-Stream EMO and PP.

The Starting Line- These guys are an ok group. There lead singer sounds like Fall Out Boys lead. They have a good song called Playing Favorites

Bright Eyes- Some people have said that Bright Eyes is going to be really big someday. Well I don't totaly agree with that, but I will say that they can make a good song on an occasion. Although Conor Oberst singing is very annoying.

Black Maria- OK, I'm going to go out on a limb here. I think these guys are good very good. They have a lot of potential as a Metal/Alternative band.

Where I come from, liking U2 is similar to supporting a football team (the first LP I ever bought was War) - it's tribal.

I don't like them as much as I used to however, it started to fade somewhere between Bono discovering irony and Bono forgetting how to write great songs.

Rattle And Hum didn't help the cause either.

Dookie is a good album, but I haven't liked anything by Green Day since. American Idiot is ok, but it is not the second coming of rock like most seem to be thinking.

My favorite new band is The Shins. Not only are they amazingly catchy, but James Mercer's lyrics, which range from being about breaking up to being about Communism, are brilliant. Oh Inverted World is a classic, but Chutes Too Narrow is one of my all-time favorites.

Radiohead is better than The Shins, so I guess they're my favorite new band.

Other great bands from the last couple of years that I've been listening to include The Unicorns, Wilco, The White Stripes, The Mars Volta, and The Kaiser Chiefs (nice and catchy). I also like Jay-Z and Kanye West when it comes to rap. I know I'm forgetting stuff, but these are all great. I'm more of a classic rock guy though.

Latley Im Liking the Brian Jonestown Massacre. If you have ever seen the documentary Dig you would know why. They use 20 instruments in basically all of there songs and its truly amazing. The Musician I have the most repect for right now is Jeff Mangum. Hes the only musician ive know who lives up to his lyrics. He writes Fantasy like lyrics and, he dosent Drink or do any drugs. And recently he ran away to the circus and plays guitar for sideshow acts.
