View Full Version : American Dad - cliche's can be funny?

ok, ok, i bet everyone on the forum is rolling their eye's when they see a thread on the topic of American Dad. However, i feel the duty as a viewer that i must share my opinion of this Family Guy off shoot. Let's take a short review ok?

As most of us know, Family guy has been cancelled and appears that it will remain that way for quite some time (this is good). So what did the producers of FG decided to substitute it with? How about a Family guy make over with rebadged characters? Sound bad enoug, it gets worse.

The first episode (i believe) is called "Pilot" (the name itself i sort of irelivant and useless when it comes to forshadowing). The short "official" summer can be found HERE (http://www.fox.com/americandad/episodes/index.htm). There's even a short clip if you want to punish yourself.

So what do i think? Well i think AD is just a FG on a diet with a slight toned down style of humor. Which is actually refreshing when you think about it (some of those FG episodes where just too much). Other than that, i must admit i caught myself laughing in some areas, but i felt like the show was just one big cliche.

For Family guy lovers (they exist?), you will enjoy this new series. You may notice that all of the characters are like the ones in FG, and what's up with talking fish? Garfield!!!!

This show has only one episode, but i can already tell you that it won't last as long as FG. Why? Take a look at the short clip and you will see.

Of course some users here will say other wise, so feel free to say your opinion.

I never thought about giving this show a rating since it's not original.

As most of us know, Family guy has been cancelled and appears that it will remain that way for quite some time.According to IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385690/), there's a movie coming out this year.

I heard rumours about the series returning this year because of the high demand for "Family Guy" DVDs in 2003.

For Family guy lovers (they exist?)Yes, people with a sense of humour do exist.

I am a Family Guy lover but I hated the American Dad pilot. And of course fans of the show exist, the reruns on Adult Swim have gotten tremendous ratings and the DVD sales have been amazing as well.

Family Guy was cancelled, but creator Seth Macfarlane has inked a deal with FOX to bring back the show for a fourth season to premiere in the summer.

Far from it. I mean, I used to enjoy the show when I was younger, but really, the show tries WAY too hard to get a laugh out of you and most of the time it fails. If at all, the show is just average. As for this new show "American Dad", meh, I just don't care.

Family Guy was a ok show, not as hilarious as some people make it out to be but it was a pretty good cartoon. I do hope it isn't axed.....but I don't know about a FG movie because while it is funny you don't usually go to the movies to watch something that you can get on TV regularily for free do you? Plus anything special about the movie like a new character or something of equal interest (diff from TV) will just cheapen the series IMO.

As i said, opinions, opinions. But i for one love Family Guy. Almost every episode delivers for me and some of the humour is so abstract i love it. Although because im English, alot of the jokes involve American tv and culture, so some of them dont deliver for me.

Yes, everyone is entitled to opinions. I still can't figure out why they called it "Pilot" can anyone explain why?

You know the shows on TV?

Well, the way they make shows is, they make one show. That show's called a "pilot." Then they show that show to the people who make shows, and on the strength of that one show they decide if they're going to make more shows. Some pilots get picked and become television programs. Some don't, become nothing.
