(It even flirts with self parody at times, dropping "Gimme Shelter" multiple times during the movie.) It's no surprise that this was the movie that finally won him Best Picture and Best Director Oscars.

I mean, even though Sullivan is the love interest of Madolyn in this movie, Billy hits off with her much better, while the supposedly 'ongoing relationship' with Sullivan seems fake (which works in effect to implying how pretentious Sullivan is as a person, I suppose).

It's not especially ambitious and doesn't have the arc of something like Michael Mann's Heat, it's just a damned enjoyable flick.
