Its hard to describe how I feel about MIB2 without comparing it to other movies, such as Ace Venture 2, Batman Returns, any Jurassic Park sequel, or any other unimaginative sequel. MIB2 wasn't that funny, wasn't that entertaining, and it evoked feelings of Deja-Vu.
The first MIB was an excellent movie, mostly in my opinion because of the performance of Tommy Lee Jones. Despite Mr. Jones often been seen as a very serious actor he's got excellent comedic timing and he put that skill to work in the first movie. Agent Kay's ability to treat something as outlandish as an alien with a regenerating head with the same amount of interest as drinking a cup of coffee is one of the things that made the first movie so quirkily funny. Will Smith's Agent Jay does not possess this ability, and so the first part of the movie in which Agent Kay is absent doesn't elicit a lot of laughs, unless you think Will Smith is good at slapstick comedy, which he is not. Sure it is mildly amusing to watch him ride a worm through the subway, but it isn't something to write home about.
All in all Will Smith's character is not nearly as funny or as fresh in this movie. Agent Jay the rookie was funny when he thought he was the hotshot and he didn't have a clue. Agent Jay the veteran isn't funny, he's trying too hard to be cool at the expense of the audience. Its almost as if the writers of this film thought that if the movie had Will Smith in it acting cool then it would make money. In MIB it felt like you were rooting for the underdog, in MIB2 it just feels like you're seeing the Yankees win another world series.
The plot of this second movie closely resembles the first in almost all aspects. Again something that is not quite what it seems is missing on earth, and again Agents Jay and Kay need to find it. Additionally in this second movie they include the antics of a talking dog and a foursome of worms in an attempt to elicit additional laughs, however the novelty of such characters wears off quickly. I actually think the banter between Regis and Kelly in the morning is more entertaining than that between Agent Kay and Frank the Pug. In short the gimmicks are the same, the gizmos are the same, the plot is nearly the same. The other thing that is different is that some of the jokes have been swapped from Agent Kay to Agent Jay.
Is the movie good? Sure it's decent. Do I recommend you pay to see it in the theatre? No, rent the video. I'm sure there is something better out this weekend. Also for those of you anxious to see the Lord of the Rings trailer, the one shown is the newer, shorter one. Not the longer, more moving, trailer released on March 29th.
