I know this is a movie site. But, since movies are really just art, I thought maybe some people out there had some favorite artists in other mediums.
Perhaps you could share a favorite painting, print or personal work with us. I like M.C. Escher. His work is so complex and mathmatical:

groovy idea for a thread. I like HR Giger, mostly famous for his alien creation. I like the way his art looks organic and industrial.

This is a cool thread. Get some culture up in here! My favorite artists are all pop artists, mainly. Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock (is that spelled right?), Art Speigleman, and the inimitable R. Crumb.

C I like Dali too... he's a bit extreme in some of his renderings... at least to this set of eyes. His early portrait work is magnifique..

Have you ever been to the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida? They had a lot of his early work on display the last time I was there...

Oh... and I like Blake too...

I can take dark, I love Bosch et al, but some of Dali's work...especially the later work is so focused in paranoia, sex, and just plain ugly themes that it turns me off. I can get that sh*t in front of the tube.

He was no doubt a brilliant painter/visionary... some of it was just too strong (?) for me.

Dali definitely had his dark moments and a lot of his work is a bit too deep for my tastes too… It has been stated there is a fine line between genius and insanity and from what I’ve read about him, Dali apparently crossed that line several times… Anyway, if you ever get a chance to see his museum in St. Petersburg, I think you would enjoy it…

What about Walter Anderson… do you like any of his work?

I love all types of art. I guess among my favorites are...

Ingres (I like his studies as well as his paintings)
John Singer Sargent (his watercolors are so different from his portaits, but just as beautiful)
Degas (especially love his dance and theater series)
Renoir (the first artist/work I was drawn to)
Vincent Van Gogh (Starry Night has to be seen in person, the prints just don't do it justice. It's Beautiful)
Daumier (love is lithographs, but don't care for his paintings)
Georgia O'Keefe (her work is very sensual, especially the Black Iris and The Grayline)
Alphonse Mucha (love his sketches as well as his posters)
Wassily Kandinsky
Auguste Rodin (saw an exhibition of his work and was very moved by his work)

There are many others I love also, but I've posted enough...

My all time favorite is Arisman
He's definately a powerful artist, and I respect him for making you feel something when you look at his work. But some of his images can be a little too unsettling for me.

In a way, he kind of reminds me of Ralph Steadman. Have you seen him? Also a powerful illustrator, but with a weird twist of humor.

I hadn't heard of him... I just went and looked. He's brilliant. I thought immediately of Gerald Scarfe:

I know nothing about art in a technical sense, but it doesn't matter, because when I look at something like that, I know it's beautiful. Not because I know who painted it, or when, or why, but because it just is.

Sometimes beauty is more a matter of fact than opinion. Paintings like this make me more sure of that principle.

Frieda Kahlo's work is fantastic...

You're right, he does remind me of Ralpf Steadman.


I fell in love with Pino on a recent trip. Here is a painting that is very similar to the one I drooled over.
