This is something that as always driven me a little crazy and I wish to hear others opinions on this matter.
Your Thoughts On The Hollywood Rating System
I think that this system is broken and outdated. Not only is it overly complicated, but it's also a way for parents to plead innocence if they show their child a movie made back when the system wasn't broken and it really pisses me off.

We can all agree - these guys don't belong.

I think the system is do for an overhaul. Its misused and here's how:
Producers/Directors want to reach the largest audience and make the most money...And these days a PG movie made for adults will take in less money than the same movie with a R rating. So what happens? The director throws in a few F bombs so they earn a R rating and people then think the film is worth seeing.
I've watched numerous newer films that are rated R, but really are a PG or PG13 film that has been 'pumped upped' to an R with just a few F bombs or other R ranted words.
My solution: let the producers/directors choose their own rating as long as it's the same or 1 step up more restrictive than the Motion Picture Association of America film rating system. Example if a film is given a PG, the producer/director can opt for the film to be a PG-13. If it's given a PG-13 then can opt for a R.
Why? the proliferation of potty mouth. There is a time and place for profanity in a film when the story or characters call for it. But way too many directors go to the potty mouth as a way to entertain the audiences. This is influence younger children to grow up talking like sailors.

With this there is no room for movies aimed at a teenage audience. Ones that are too intense for kids, but too childish for adults. Examples are Red Dawn, Temple of Doom, or The Dark Knight Trilogy.

G...for children (films made for kids)
R...for teens and adults (any film that's not a kiddie film and not porn)
NC-17...for adults only (porn and artsy porn)

In Brazil ratings are worse:
12 years
14
16
18
Are the ratings by age. Pretty arbitrary between 14 and 16, like a movie a 16 year old can watch but not a 15 year old? Also, some R rated movies are rated 12 in Brazil like The Matrix.

Another thing that makes me mad about the rating system is how little some people understand it. You have no idea how many people I have met that don't seem to understand the fact that an R rated movie is going to have some inappropriate stuff in it. And since for some reason people don't use the G rating anymore, people now expect all PG movies to be completely clean. I saw a audience review for the new Jungle Book remake that said it was far to violent for young children and should be rated R. I think that speaks for itself.

I have no problem with the R, PG-13, PG, G, NC-17 rating systems, but the way the MPAA determines the ratings of films is BS.

Their handing down of ratings is very inconsistent. And like you said they are WAY too hung up on naughty language. A documentary about soldiers gets an R rating even if their is no combat footage because we service man use the F word in just about every other sentence. Clerks got an NC-17 ranking for it's language even though there is no nudity or violence in it. It was appealed and over turned. That is BS. Say the f word once and you get a PG-13 but two or more gets you an R? It is ridiculous.

Agreed, it needs to be more consistent like you say.....Let's say I'm in the mood for a adult action crime film, gritty, bloody wih some nudity by an attractive actresses Something with a lot of punch! But what I get is: a film that is PG bland and only got an R because the characters used bad language. I'd feel ripped off. It use to be decades ago that an R movie meant something intense, but not now.

And with that, there are a lot of movies that I loved that I couldn't see in theater's without sneaking in just because they think that being 16 that I can't handle a bit of bad language.
