Favorite movies of the 21st Century.

Tools

I couldn't find this thread when I searched for it, so I assume it hasn't been started yet.

The new century (and millennium) is still pretty fresh.....but, what are your favorite flicks so far?

I always try to stress "favorite" as opposed to "best." Taste is individual, and is not to be presumed upon others.

Your list can be only two movies ( or 1 for that matter), or it can be 100.

I've listed my ten favorite movies of the 21st century below. That's a nice, round number. In alphabetical order:

28 Days Later
About Schmidt
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Donnie Darko
Grizzly Man (doc)
Kung Fu Hustle
Naploean Dynamite
Open Range
Pan's Labyrinth
There Will Be Blood

That's all I can think of for now.

A quick look turns up Masterpieces of the new millenium and an older thread started by Travis Bickle: Top Ten of 21st Century. You actually posted in the latter thread way back in 2003, Karl. Here's what you said:

Are there really 10 decent movies since 2000?

Personally, I would tend to doubt it.

But here goes:

1) The Royal Tenenbaums
2) Memento
3) In The Bedroom
4) Dagon ( excellent horror film)

okay, I'm really straining here..............

5) Lord of the Rings- FOTR (why not?)
6) Gladiator (it's a big, fun film)
7) The Score
8) Shadow of the Vampire
9) Bandits (a guilty pleasure)
10) Snatch (still more entertaining than Pulp Fiction)

There were some real gems in 1999, just one year behind:

1) American Movie (doc)
2) Blair Witch Project (finally, a real horror movie)
3) The Straight Story (David Lynch stoned on milk and cookies)
4) Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter Jr. (doc by the incomparable Errol Morris)
And, I agree with you that Mr. Death is really good.

I did a top ten for this decade so-far in Top Films of the Decades, but looking at my list it's changed a bit in the last nine months, having re-watched many films and in the process of compiling my top 100.

Here's everything I liked (
or higher) from the last 8+ years. I won't rank them, but I'll put my very favorites in orange:

2008: Be Kind Rewind; Leatherheads;
2007: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; Atonement; The Bourne Ultimatum; Breach; Fay Grim; Hot Fuzz; Into the Wild; Lust, Caution; Meet the Robinsons 3-D; Music and Lyrics; Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D; No Country for Old Men; Ocean's 13; Ratatouille; Redacted; Sleuth; Southland Tales; Spider Man 3; Sunshine; Transformers; Waitress; Zodiac
2006: All the King's Men; Art School Confidential; Babel; The Black Dahlia; Cars; Casino Royale; Children of Men; Deja Vu; The Departed; The Devil Wears Prada; Everything will be OK; The Good German; Inland Empire; Monster House; Paprika; Pirates of the Caribbean 2; A Prairie Home Companion; The Prestige; Scoop;
2005: Batman Begins; Brick; Constantine; Conversations with other women; The Curse of the Were-Rabbit; Don't Come Knocking; The Girl From Monday; Good Night, and Good Luck; Grizzly Man; A History of Violence; King Kong; Kingdom of Heaven; Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang; Mr. & Mrs. Smith; Munich; The New World; The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes; Pride & Prejudice; The Proposition; Seven Swords; Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D; Sin City; Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith; Syriana; Who's Camus Anyway;
2004: 2046; The Assassination of Richard Nixon; The Aviator; The Bourne Supremacy; eros; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; Hotel Rwanda; House of Flying Daggers; I Heart Huckabees; The Incredibles; Kill Bill: Vol. 2; Kung Fu Hustle; The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou; Napoleon Dynamite; Ocean's Twelve; The Saddest Music in the World; Sideways; Silver City; Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow; Shaun of the Dead; Spartan; Spiderman 2; Starsky & Hutch; Steamboy; Van Helsing;
2003: 21 Grams; Beyond Re-Animator; Big Fish; Casa de los Babys; Code 46; Coffee and Cigarettes; Finding Nemo; The Fog of War; Freddy vs. Jason; Hulk; Intolerable Cruelty; Matchstick Men; The Matrix Reloaded; Mystic River; Once Upon a Time in Mexico; Owning Mahowny; Pirates of the Carribean; The Return of the King; Shanghai Knights; Tokyo Godfathers; The Triplets of Belleville; The Tulse Luper Suitcases; Young Adam; Zatoichi;
2002: About Schmidt; 28 Days Later; Adaptation; The Bourne Identity; Bubba Ho-tep; Catch Me If You Can; Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary; Gangs of New York; Heaven; The Quiet American; Spider; Star Wars: Episode 2; Sunshine State; Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance; Talk to Her; The Two Towers; Zhou Yu's Train;
2001: Amelie; Bandits; Beijing Bicycle; Black Hawk Down; Blue Spring; La Brassiere; The Deep End; The Devil's Backbone; Dogtown and Z-Boys; Fellowship of the Ring; Full Time Killer; Ghost World; Gosford Park; Heist; Ichi the Killer; Invincible; Koro's Day Out; Lagaan; Lakeboat; Lantana; The Man Who Wasn't There; Millennium Actress; Monsters, Inc.; Nekojiro-so; No Such Thing; Novocaine; The Pledge; Quitting; Sex and Lucia; Shaolin Soccer; Spirited Away; Storytelling; The Whale Hunt;
2000: Amores perros; Bamboozled; Battle Royale; Best in Show; Blood: The Last Vampire; The Boiler Room; Brother; Cast Away; The Claim; Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon; Gladiator; In the Mood For Love; Little Otik; Love's Labour's Lost; Memento; Men of Honor; O Brother, Where Art Thou?; The Princess and the Warrior; Sexy Beast; Shanghai Noon; Snatch; State and Main; Time and Tide; Vatel;

As you can see, I'm not that picky (or maybe I'm just in a good mood today). These are probably a little over 3/5ths of everything I've seen from those years.

So my unranked top 24 of 2000-2008 goes something like this now:

Into the Wild
Sleuth
Sunshine
Zodiac
Everything will be OK
The Prestige
Brick
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
The New World
2046
The Incredibles
Shanghai Knights
Young Adam
About Schmidt
Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary
Heaven
Talk to Her
Zhou Yu's Train
Gosford Park
Monsters, Inc.
No Such Thing
The Pledge
The Claim
O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Favorites of the new millennium, huh?
Since I'm at work, I'll have to make it short, but off the top of my head:

V for Vendetta
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon*
Snatch
Shaun of the Dead
Dog Soldiers
The Descent
Infernal Affairs (superior to The Departed)
High Fidelity*
Secretary
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot about O Brother, Where Art Thou?Also, I really liked The Aviator; DiCaprio was terrific in it.

*Came out in 2000, and there's some arguement over whether the millennium started in 2000 or 2001, but whatever.

No doubt I'm forgetting some, but that will do for now.

linespalsy,

I think my wife is cheating on me. May I employ your services?

ha ha

Seriously, what a blast from the past. However, none of the movies on my current list had I seen in 2003 when I made that post.

I guess I'm a little more optimistic now of the 21st century.
