Best of 2002

What are the best films of the year? It's almost over, so this is a good time to
devise the almighty top ten list.

I have missed a few "Igby Goes Down", "the Ring", "Road to Perdition" and "Far from Heaven" to name a few, but thus far, my favourite films of the year are... (In no order)

-Rodger Dodger (great script)
-Punch-Drunk Love
-Bowling For Columbine
...

What are your favs thus far?

most of the movies i see are on video, so it'll be a while before i have a competative top ten for 2002, but the movies i've seen theatrically this year are, in order of best to least:

spirited away
sunshine state
millennium actress
whale hunt
koro's day out
char's counter attack
panda kopanda

spiderman
harry potter 2
star wars 2

of those movies, the first 7 would make it on any competative top ten year for me, but only one was actually released in 2002...of the bottom 3, all were released in 2002, but only 2 would ever make a top ten worth listing...so so far my top four movies of the year:

sunshine state

spiderman
harry potter 2

star wars 2 (after seeing it for a second time, i can definatively say this movie is mediocre.)

After seeing Episode 2 the first time, I could tell it was CRAP. Someone needs to headbutt some sense into George Lucas. Hire a writer...YOU CAN AFFORD IT!

nah, i had a great time when i first saw it...i even enjoyed the crappy romance stuff. this time around, while i still thought most of the stuff with obi wan would make a great action movie, the numerous scenes of anakin whining about how becoming a jedi takes too long and is too much work, or pathetically hitting on the princess became totally unbearable. in fact, i didnt even finish it; i fell asleep somewhere around when obiwan got captured.

Lucas needs to write better stories. He needs to slow it down with the special effects (let the actors look at an actual actor and not give them an invisible eyeline).

He should film on location in real deserts, and outside of real palaces.

Nick Stahl would have been a better Anakin. Even Ryan Gosling.

yeah, if there were ever a slim chance he'd do another movie that i'd take seriously as anything more than totally disposable entertainment, i'd agree with you on all those points, travis. but i just dont have the patience to get upset when lucas ties together a shoddy story with way too much string (special effects). i guess when i saw episode 2 the first time i was shocked more by how much better it was than i was expecting (phantom menace) than by how sucky anakin was. i still say this movie had some great action, but the numerous flaws just became too glaring on the second viewing to ignore...plus since i knew what to expect, anakin could no longer leave me in awe of his pompasity with those ghastly pickup lines.

Too many potentially great films opening in the next month or so for me to compile a list now. T'would be premature.

I'm not old, you're just 12.
2002 has been over long enough, so I figure now's a good time as any to start this thread up again.....

My 100% Honest, No B.S., No Pretending to be Sophisticated, Possibly Embarrasing, Top 10 of 2002:

1. Spider-Man - For me, it just didn't get any better than Spidey. It was just too fun, and the best comics movie since Batman Returns...

2. XXX - I saw this movie many times, second only to Spider-Man. It's loud, stupid, and completely unbelievable, but then, that's why I liked it. Bring on the sequel...

3. Minority Report - Disturbing Sci-Fi and Stephen Speilberg seem to go together pretty well. This is a mighty fine motion picture.

4. Austin Powers in Goldmember - This was by far the funniest movie of 2002.

5. Jackass the Movie - This comes in a close second.....

(Have I lost anyone yet? and so I soldier on to the second half...)

6. 8 Mile - Eminem seems to be a natural born actor, and this was one of those movies I couldn't stop talking about.

7. Gangs of New York - I'll bet a lot of you are thinking this is the first good movie on my list....It's Scorsese, it's good, quack quack quack.

9. Catch Me if You Can - This was just great. DiCaprio is finally back as an interesting actor, Tom Hanks is almost unrecognisable, and it's got Christopher Walken in it....CHRISTOPHER WALKEN! How cool is that?

(and now we reach the end of this list, and I suddenly think I should have done it in descending order....too late now...Read this post backwards to get the full effect.)

10. Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers - This was cool, especially Gollum, and the little bits of comedy relief that made this actually seem like a Peter Jackson movie. Let's hope for more Dwarf Tossing in Return of The King!

Deathman18's top movies of 2002

10. Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrects (Just great)
9. Orange County (Ya weird choice but i liked something about it)
8. 8-mile (Didn't like Eminem before this movie....not that i really do now, but i appreciate his work in this movie)
7. Changing Lanes (Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson do wonderful jobs in this ignored movie)
6. Spider Man (Most anticipated movie of the year for me...and it didn't disapoint)
5. Frailty (Scary movie of the year for me and even has a moral)
4. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Action movie of the year and i was impressed by the acting...especially from the wee hobbits)
3. Minority Report (sci-fi movie of the year and Speilberg at the top of his game)
2. Signs (suspense movie of the year. Another brilliant film by M. Night Shylaman)
1. Catch Me if You Can (Movie of the year about the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. Leonardo DeCaprio does the best acting job this year. Also one of the best stories of the year.)

Yeah weird list eh? ok let's move into the 5 worst movies of 2002.

5. Life, or Something like (nothing like a movie.)
4.XxX (Tribute to James Bond? Yeah, wake up and smell the blockbusters Ebert.)
3. The Tuxedo (Less said about this "film" the better)
2. Snow Dogs (Disney is losing it.....Anyone for Toy Story 3 ?)
1. Scooby Doo (that haha funny tv show turned disgustingly wrong into the Worst movie of the year.)

There are a few on my lists, but the number one for me was definitely The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, and the book is even better. That was a KICK ASS movie. I've been pretty obsessed with it since the first one came on in 2001. My friend was even worse than me, she was like writing hobbit porn and crap. haha. Anyhow, here are some of the others -

2) Austin Powers, Goldmember - I agree with whoever said that this was the funniest movie of 02. I laughed througout the entire movie. If you thought it couldn't get any funnier in The Spy Who Shagged Me, well, it did!

3) Blue Crush - this movie wasn't that big of a hit, it seemed, but I really really liked it. I dragged my boyfriend to go and see it with me. (:

4) The Hot Chick - a lot of people thought this movie was dumb but I love Rob Schneider! And I thought this movie was funny. (;

5) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - I am slightly reluctant to add this one, because I was kind of disappointed with it. I think it was more geared towards kids and thats why I couldn't really get into it. I enjoyed the book, though.

6) Catch Me If You Can - this movie made me think of Leo Dicaprio so differently than I thought of his in his other movies. He seems to really have grown into a wonderful actor, and Tom Hanks performance was great, as usual.

Well thats all I can think of for now. I'm sure there is more, though.

I hope everyone here gets a chance to check out "Rodger Dodger", and "Storytelling". Two really well written films from last year.
Though be warned of the content in "Storytelling", after all, it's from the same freak that did "Happiness".
