Thelma and Louise

A female buddy movie mounted on a grand scale that works on almost every level. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis play BFF's whose weekend getaway is rocked by a tragic event that turns them into fugitives from the law. Ridley Scott's direction is atmospheric and Callie Khouri's Oscar-winning screenplay is well-served by the stars...I don't think Susan Sarandon has ever been better.

26.
Bonnie and Clyde

The 1967 classic that ushered in a new generation of filmmaking and made Warren Beatty a Hollywood force to be reckoned with and not just a pretty face.

25.
The Deer Hunter

The 1978 Oscar winner for Best Picture is an epic and disturbing look at the effects of the Vietnam war on a tight knit group of people in a small town. A seriously intense look at the absurdity of war that makes no apologies for its brutality.

24.
Men in Black

A bold story told with just the right amount of tongue in cheek, some striking visual effects, and the surprising chemistry between the stars make this one work.

23.
Ransom

Director Ron Howard hit a bullseye here with this gripping action drama about a self-made millionaire (Mel Gibson) whose actions in averting a strike at the airline he owns may have resulted in the kidnapping of his own son (Brawley Nolte). Everything works here....a remake of a French film, Howard has mounted a kidnapping drama filled with flawed and fascinating characters, all with their own agendas, especially the lead character who is torn about his culpability in what has happened. The cast is first rate...Gibson has never been better, Renee Russo is strong yet vulnerable as his wife, and Gary Sinise is appropriately slimey as the kidnapper.

22.
Once Upon a Time In America

An epic look at organized crime through the relationship of two childhood friends whose questionable behaviors find their lives at the center of organized crime. A personal story told on an epic scale, superbly directed and acted. Anyway you slice it, a classic.

21.
Dead Calm

A different kind of action film because of the confines of the location but I think it deserves mention here. Billy Zane is completely unhinged as a psycho terrorizing a couple (Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill) on a boat. Because of its setting, the film creates a completely claustrophogic atmosphere that is oddly riveting.

20.
The Thing

Director John Carpenter knocked it out of the park with this remake of the 1950's sci-fi classic. If I ever do a thread about the best remakes, this would definitely be in the top 5.

18.
Fight Club

Another unique motion picture experience from director David Fincher about a secret club where men meet and beat each other to a pulp and how said club is the jumping off point for a much larger agenda. To say much more would ruin it for the uninitiated, but I will say this film is blistering in its originality, the violence is in your face and it features a pair of scorching performances from Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.

17.
Aliens

James Cameron created another sequel that surpassed the first film in this sequel to the 1980 thriller focused on the only survivor from that film (Sigourney Weaver). Superb special effects and a spectacular lead performance from Weaver that actually earned her an Oscar nomination.

14.
Casino

Martin Scorcese's explosive look at organized crime in the desert. Scorsese has spared no expense here and has gotten powerhouse performances from Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and especially Sharon Stone, her earned her first and only Oscar nomination for her work here.

A lot of these movies I don't think are action/adventure. Not a criticism, just a thought.
Yeah, I know I'm stretching the parameters of action/adventure here a bit, but I guess I may have bitten off a little more than I can chew with this thread.
