Anyone seen Donnie Darko...The you may be able to help!

I have recently watched the critically acclaimed Donnie Darko (as persuaded by my media teacher, and other friends) and they all seem to think it is a work of art??? Being truthfull - i don't even get it, i can't see the logic in the story...Now maybe i'm just thinking too hard and missing the obvious explanation that in the end Donnie is to be a 'Hero', like i have heard from most people...So anyone out there who could fill in the blanks for me, or just tell me what they think happened or what it meant. It would be appreciated.

Donnie is the Living Reciever. He is the hero chosen to sacrifice himself in order to save everyone in the real world. Most of the film occurs in the Tangeant Universe. Frank the Bunny is the hero's guide, since the hero kills him at the end.
You have to ask specific questions you can't just ask us to explain it for you.

Watch the director commentary, but also keep in mind that not everything has a specific meaning. The director says he left many things up to the viewer (you will see and hear about examples in the commentary). I think the overall ambience of the film should be taken into consideration as well. A dark, moody atmosphere slowly builds as time passes and the tangeant univse loses cohesion. There are religious overtones involved as well, as you see in the scenes with the science teacher (Noah Wiley). These scenes are the directors attempts to explain what is happening, but the ideas are portrayed in a somewhat obtuse manner, so no clear explaination is ever given really.

What do you think it's about?

I find the film interesting, funny, thought provoking, and touching. I did watch it multiple times before forming an opinion though, as it is a bit confusing. Watch it again!

I love Donnie Darko, it's my second favourite film, ever. I could try to explain it for you, but I think that everyone should form an opinion for him/herself on this piece of cinematic art.

remember, when donnie torched patrick swazye's house revealing his kiddie porno stash, that led to hiim being arrested. which led to the health/gym teacher going to defending him, which led to donnie's mom having to fill in for her to go on the plane, which acted as the time travel thingy-ma-bobber, which crashed, i don't know...it was a screwed up movie. but i kinda get how it's all about sacrifice so gretchen, donnie's girlfriend won't die...and the bunny dude also.
