Michael Mann

Right now watching Thief (1981). I've always avoided this film because I had seen the ending while flicking channels one day. Figured whats the point if I knew the ending already? Now Im older and can appreciate the ride as much as the destination. With a combination of Michael Manns directing, James Caan, and music by Tangerine Dream its strong. As good a Director as anyone in the business.

Just watched Heat yesterday. Too many characters, leaving a couple empty, but some very good scripting and thrills.

I find Michael Mann overrated and I tend to be underwhelmed by his films. I don't think he has ever made a truly great film. For me, Manhunter is his best film and it is an 8/10.

Collateral, Last of the Mohicans, Crime Story, The Keep. He has an eclectic catalogue and maybe they're not perfect films but whatever he puts on the screen you can count on it being gorgeous. I think he's earned any praise people throw his way.
