Anime Preferences

Tools

I've just started watching some anime shows for the first time in a few months and it got me wondering what kind of anime do members of this forums watch. For me personally, I always prefer a good slice of life, but I do tend to avoid ecchi, yuri, yoai, hentai and sports. Is there a certain genre you really like, a genre or two you won't even touch? Let's talk about it.

You ready? You look ready.
What? You're avoiding the best ones!

Sports anime? That sounds horrible
Think like Prince of Tennis, only they usually tend to be worse than that.

@John McClain I really don't like Japan's perverted side getting in the way of a story. It doesn't help that because the legal age for consent varies from 13 to 18 based on the prefecture you were born in, in Japan that a lot of the anime has dealings with young kids. That's a part of culture in Japan I like to avoid.

Never heard or seen that, but who boxes like that. If anything, that image makes the concept of whatever anime that is look weird and uninviting to people who aren't already sports anime fans.

Have you heard of Ren? It's a pretty cool series that happens to have some nudity, I never found it distracting because it made sense contextually.

Can't say I have. I did try a few anime's where sexuality and nudity were addressed about 6 years back but none of it really kept my interest and I never ended up finishing any of those shows. I just don't see it as a thing I'd be interested in.

Movies ~ Most Studio Ghibli films, Wolf Children

Anime Series ~ Angel Sanctuary (well its a "sneak peak" to the books), Hell Girl, Darker Than Black and Mushishi.

I might come off as rude by saying this, but is that really it? I can't say you'd be the only person I've ever run into who's only watched a few anime's but that does seem like a very few, as in an amount where it would even be hard to pick a genre of anime that you like over others.

It's from the classic boxing anime (based on an even more classic 1960s boxing manga) Ashita no Joe. It's kinda a prototype for sports manga/anime in general, but yeah I'm not going to put up much of a defense of it in terms of it's accessibility or any other quality.

I don't really watch/read much these days, but I did (mis)spend a good chunk of my 20s watching anime and (even more-so) reading sports manga, so I guess you could say it was a preference. And yeah, the vast majority of them truly are garbage, but I will stand by a few (H2, Rough, Touch) to the bitter end. I'd also like to mention that Taiyo Matsumoto (possibly of interest to wintertriangles and others since he did the Tekkon Kinkreet manga) made some pretty good sports manga. Ping Pong, Zero, and Hana otoko.

I'm trying to think of what else I used to watch. Mostly a lot of stuff with giant robots (favorites included Giant Robo and Eva) and super-cheesy romance. Macross was a favorite because it had both.

Apropos of the other conversation in this thread, my favorite mangaka (Naoki Yamamoto) got his start doing porn and still writes stuff with a lot of sex, so I guess I'm somewhat guilty of that preference as well...

I suppose this is just a reminder that everyone is different. Just because I can't get behind certain things, doesn't mean that other won't, and that's fine.

Actually this is it. Im not much into anime. I am an "older" person. My daughter, who is 21 years old, likes much more than I do.

I suppose that makes sense. Not everyone is going to be watching anime religiously till the day they die. Many people will come to outgrow it.
